Removing/fitting the centre armrest

Featured Replies

I posted this in another thread but thought it may warrant a thread of its own as it'll be easier to find if anyone else wants to do it.

Removal of the centre armrest is a straightforward job. The two sides of the armrest base unclip from each other and pull apart pretty easily with a trim removal tool and then unclip from the base itself. There's then a single bolt through the centre of the base which needs to be removed to leave just a short section that's fixed to the car with four bolts. There's a single screw under the storage tray behind the armrest holding the centre trim in place. Removing this gives just enough wiggle room to undo the four bolts and jiggle the bottom section of the armrest out underneath.

I intended to take photos but got a bit involved in the task at hand. If anyone's interested I can take some of the armrest and its various parts now it's out of the car.

I've no doubt that fitting would be just as easy.

This is reassuring- I've just paid £30 to a scrappie for one!

So, tried fitting it in the car park of the scrappie- couldn't manage it! I managed to get the fixing mount thing in, but I couldn't get it screwed in, so removed it all and it's now sitting in a bag in my house! The front screws on the mount look pretty tricky to get in. Also- the carpet covers up the mounting points, so for anyone else wanting to install one, make sure you move the carpet out of the way!

Hi

I'm trying to get my armrest off too and I'm stuck

So I've removed the trims on each side that just pull off

That then reveals a torx screw on each side which I've undone

And I've even took that big torx screw at the back that's underneath the rear cover (flat astray)

But it's stuck and feels like there's something holding it from the gearbox end

Where exactly is the screw/ bolt your referring to

Thanks for you help in advance

If you are referring to the plastic arch shaped mount that is bolted to the floor there are 4 torx screws holding it in place (2 at the back of mount and 2 at the front of mount). The long torx bolt to the side, once removed, should allow the arm rest and pivot to slide off just leaving the plastic arch shaped mount screwed to floor as I have mentioned above. You need to loosen the centre console to gain access to front screws. This is done with one torx screw at rear under the tray behind arm rest, two torx screws either side in the front foot wells and two hidden screws under cup holder rubber mat in front of gear stick. This should allow you enough room. You will probably have to slide front seats back and forth while doing this as well to gain access.  It’s not easy but a long torx screw driver is very useful (the screws don’t seem to be overly magnetic either, which doesn’t help).

Top tip

Use a glue spot on the end of the torx bit to hold the bolt in place as you go through the gap to line up with the hole

Non of my magnetised bits held the screw as it's fiddly to line up

Finally got it off!!!!

The handbrake was the only thing stopping it from coming free

Soooo I yanked it up REAL high then it cleared.

The armrest I bought didn't have anything to secure it at the rear end so it was moving about and not as secure. The old centre console had a big torx screw underneath where the rear "flat ashtray" was. So I drilled a hole underneath the new armrest making sure I drilled in the right placr and used the torx screw to secure it in place, if you know what I mean.

All is good now but I realised the new armrest didn't come with a handbrake gaiter and the old ones gaiter is flat instead of it being arched.

So looking for a gaiter now!!!

Why the hell don't they have armrests on cars as standard these days. They want u to pay for EVERYTHING as an option!

In the last line of your previous post Haks, you asked the question and answered it.:giggle:

It would be interesting indeed to have peoples opinion regarding the fitting of aftermarket Arm rests and how good they are once fitted.

I pick up my 1.2 SE later today and while I would love an armrest, the thought of drilling the centre console fills me with dread.

Harry

Noooo

You can't see the drill hole

It's on the base of the armrest, like underneath.

You have to remove the rear ashtray to see it. I did it soo the rear end if the armrest, the part that sits on the transmission tunnel is secure as it didn't have anything to secure it

There's no drilling! There are screw holes welded onto the transmission tunnel underneath the rear 'ashtray' thing.

Sorry mate, i wasn't inferring you shouldn't have drilled, it's just the thought of drilling my new car console that puts fear into me.

I watched a 'how to' on You tube  and they fitted an 'Armster'. It looks a good product but I'd need to know how reliable and serviceable they are or should I go for an OE version. ( or just do without?)

Fitting the Armster they had to drill 2 holes each side of the console but right at the bottom where they are not really visible.

Harry

I'd go for an original armrest

Not anything against armster. Just my personal chioce so it looks factory

My cars a 63 plate SE, some SE come with armrest and some don't

I went to breakers and got an armrest off a 65 plate octavia

£60 it cost

Not even a scratch on it :)

I got mine from a scrapped Fabia SEL. Have a look on ebay, find someone who's breaking one, and ask them for it. Cost me £30, plus £8 for some torx screwdrivers. Certainly better than paying Skoda £180 for it.

Do without the annoying thing! Had 2 fabias, both with armrests. Never used them, just left them folded up in the way of reaching into the back seats. Couldn't really use them on the manual gearbox.

That's my opinion anyway.

Nooo my last Fabia had the armrest and I loved it and used it all the time, Handy little cubby too.

I'm with Harry! I love having mine. It's a little annoying the way it kind of gets in the way of the handbrake, but I've learned to live with that. Instead of pulling up and back, like I used to in my Polo, you have to just pull upwards.

Probably a bit late, but do you still have the original hole cover from before you had the arm-rest?

Hmmmm I might actually! I didn't remove it when I traded the car in, so it's probably still around. I'll go have a look for you.

Thankyou! I'm looking to remove my arm-rest, and the only thing stopping me is the fact i'd have a massive hole in the console.

Someone somewhere said its possible to ring a dealer and get them to order the part, but having asked my dealer they don't seem to think its possible as it's a factory fit option and not aftermarket. (though they do provide a service to fit parts if you manage to get them yourself)

Does the armrest adjust up and down, or is it static with only the ability to open the 'lid'?

I may, at some point soon, be tempted to grab one - after 1,800 miles in approx 5 weeks, I'm realising I don't know where to put my left arm on longer journeys... ha.

If anyone else has pictures/videos of installation, that'd be great. I'm predominantly a visual learner! :)

It's adjustable up and down with a little compartment in it too, i'll grab a quick clip of it when i go out in like 40 mins or so

Once it's out (some day soon i hope), id be happy to part with it as i won't be needing it anymore (that thing's caused many bruised elbows and bashed nerves in my long thin boney arms lol)

The key selling points made known, haha.

Have to say that I really liked the armrest! I would leave it down the whole time, it was a little awkward at first to use the handbrake but I got used to it within a few weeks.

My issue is probably that i'm 6'4" and have my seat quite far back, so having the arm-rest either way gets in the way unfortunately. For the less lengthy types it would probably be much better!

Edit: Any luck finding that tray thing?
