comparison of VAG cars to new hyundai 2015 i20

Featured Replies

not my cup of tea to be honest.

most Hyundai/Kia stylists (both interior and exterior) seem to me to be visually impaired and obsessed with form over function - the current i30 centre console maze of switches being a prime case in point.

although I have to admit to liking my own very reliable, if dog-ugly, Hyundai many years ago.

You do know who the head honcho of styling is don't you???   Peter Shreyer ex of Audi...

Really, all those flamboyant Korean curves and fold lines must be some kind of reaction to recycling the exact same boxy styling for the past 30 years at Audi.

I see the i20 salesman is back on the Skoda forum again!!! Doesn't give up trying to flog the i20.. sales must be crap..  :dull:

you may want to bother these people instead.. http://www.hyundai-forums.com/i20-forum/

If 'bluecar1' is actually a salesman maybe he can point us towards bargains in the future.

It's also a nice change to hear that it isn't after all just Skoda that make decent cars lol on here it's if u buy anything other than a skoda you are a fool ha lol

and no I am not a salesperson for Hyundai or any other make, my day job is in I.T. and not in a company anything to do with the motor industustry

and if you notice , I only post info about the i20 in this post and others which are discussing alternatives to the fabia III

I wrote the post as a number of the motoring magazines are actively comparing the fabia III to the i20, and as I now own one and having driven skoda vehicles for many years I can give a fairly unbiased review

if you wish to remain blinkered and not admit other makes may be catching up with skoda or that skoda for some may no longer be the value for money it once was then feel free to ignore other makes and the skoda UK people will push the prices up further and rub their hands with glee when you walk in the showroom

if you actually read my post you will see there are a number of points where I say VAG tech is better, particualy the engines, so it is not all rosy

bottom line all cars are a compromise, as no car is perfect for a single driver, could be spec is right but price is higher than you want to pay, could be price is right, but spec is lower than you want or something missing you want, could be spec and price is right but engine is not what you would prefer

for me comparing the i20 to the fabia, the i20 is great apart from the engine, the fabia is great engine but to pricey for the base spec of the SE with kit I do not want and missing stuff I did so would have to do factory order and pay even more, so my compromise is to put up with a poorer engine which does not bother me as I do not worry about 0-60 times etc but it would have been nice to have a better engine

when Hyundai bring out the new 1.0L 120PS turbo engine (in the next few months)  I think their will be a few more people look at it as the week point in the range will be mostly addressed

how many of us on here can remember the change in skoda when the Octavia mkI came out and how many people laughed at it, now look at skoda

I personally think Hyundai may be at that same point, difference is hyundai's tech is home grown in house, where as skoda was given to them by VAG when they bought the brand, so could be interesting in a few years time

oh and one more point, Hyundai may be becoming a mini VAG as they own KIA and they share parts and tech, a bit like VW and skoda, so keep an eye on them as well, but personally I don't like the kia corporate grill and styling

Still a hyundai but recently saw the newer shape sante fe and was quite impressed.

they seem to have made a massive step change in styling and quality, across the range as new models come online

we have yet to see the reliability.

weak points for reliability on the older models were the clutches, time will tell

The new Sorento looks quite nice.

Only down sides have been residuals and engines IMHO everything else has stepped up

Sadly residuals and price hikes have made some less favourable such as Santa Fe

The engines will meet the Eu emission requirements and proper build quality and reliability and will be built in the EU for selling in the EU. Volkswagen group can not say the same really, and the companies home government are not the ones to hold them to answer for untruthful economy, emissions and reliability figures that takes authorities in other wold regions to do that. Decent warrantied from VWG might show their faith in what they build, and train the technicians in dealerships.

That might be the case but I was referring to power, smoothness and mpg.

That on top of the poor residuals does make a difference for some.

But others may buy for different reasons

Are residuals actually worse say at 3 years or maybe more important at 4 or 5?. I think not in the real world. Actually I know not. The longer warranty helps. 48% figures might be a VWG. Wish and dream. Mk1 Fabia vRS are a residual wonder, not many other Skoda.

Ok you know, that's great.

For rest of people a 36 month PCP deal will be more expensive for a £25k list car than many £30k vag cars. It's not critical but something to factor in

Ps do you or have you owned a kia/Hyundai?

Yes I have had a Hyundai leased and Kia owned from new.

Just curious what models you've had?

I actually like them and been impressed with their rise. But as with everything it's pros and cons

A 2006 Kia Picanto 1.1lx auto which I kept until last year. It cost me £1000 a year to own. And a i30 1.6tdi Auto 2009 which was pretty good and no lack of go or economy with 130ps. Pull fuse 22 and keep the A/C on. No engine braking though.

We had a sportage, great kit on it

my i20 £12,500 car, pcp over 42 months residual was quoted at £4000 (32%)

my old GLII about £15,000, pcp over 42 month residual was quoted as £4750 (31.6%)

both similar mileage so looks pretty close to me

so anyone got a pcp residual on a fabia III SE 12,000 miles / year? for a comparison?

currently skoda pcp is 4.9%apr on fabia ( and £1000 contribution on stock vehicles ? have they got a lot of unsold stock in the system?)

Hyundai pcp is 5.9% but has £1000 deposit contribution, so that knocks a chunk of interest of and lowers the apr% or you can get a better motor for the money (go up an engine or trim level virtually for free)

I wasn't just comparing skoda and kia. Never mind some people get so defensive.

I know for a fact deals I had and also were offered but hey some people know better

Enjoy your car, I have a lot of time for the kia and Hyundai cars and u have opened one till months ago. But I could get better rate for Audi than kia on PCP so moved on.

Comparing price with price, not spec, not engine not anything just price.

Kia Sportage KX3 sat nav £26300 with £600 Kia contribution, 36 months and 10k miles a year

Audi Q3 for £25400 no contribution same 36month and 10k miles

Audi is hence cheaper but only by £300 so at guess about £10 a month or less

Kia works out at £354 pm

Audi is £280pm

Kia pence per mile over is 15p and Audi down at 6p

I'm not saying cars are same, comparible or speced in similar vane. Some people buy cars and care little about certain options but others do. It was purely just an example of PCP.

Nothing damning or definitive. Just basics finance calcs of websites.

Everyone buys for different reasons. And as I say I like the kias and Hyundai ranges

pcp rates all depends on the model and how they are selling for each manufacturer

it is one of the many levers (along with deposit contribution and free servicing etc) the manufacturer has without reducing the RRP of the car

i'm not defensive just trying to compare apples with apples

originally the thread was about the i20 v fabia III, but the thread has expanded and quite interesting

post same time as you

that is interesting, the costs certainly is cheaper, I assume that is the residuals and the APR% making the difference, do you have the residuals and the APR as well

that way we can see what is causing the difference?

just demonstrates you have to do all the figures, not just the headline figures

full figures are your finance, insurance costs, fuel costs, road tax and servicing etc

for me the fuel and servicing costs are slightly higher than a fabia, but road tax is same, and insurance is group 6 compared to group 9 for the fabia, PCP was about the same for the two cars I was comparing

Edited by bluecar1

Yea I understand that mate. Not having a go but more passing on what I experienced.

Sorry realise it was vs fabia but grew arms and legs

I agree i20 is def a great rival to fabia. Skodas in general to me are overpriced now to claim to be budget brand

Sorry Audi apr is higher at 6.2 and Kia at 4.9. Most is down to residuals

PCP deals usually work better on so called premium

That's not about buying cars it is renting them and Volkswagen Finance and cars back into trade at 3 Years. That is all about to change. VW,Audi overvalued used cars and the market for them shrinking since the cat is out the bag on reliability or lack off. Carcraft gone, BCA financing dealerships etc..all change soon at VWG and maybe honest residuals. Instead of cars sitting unsold used in dealerships.
