vRS Swap from TDI to TSI?

Featured Replies

I have a 63 plate vRS TDI on a two year lease.  I have been really happy with it (first Skoda) and will be having another! The question is, do I swap to the TSI engine?  The TDI performance is decent but I'm itching for more!

Also any recommended extras?  Two young children so maybe privacy glass should be considered.

Currently driving

vRS TDI Hatch

Brilliant Silver

Black Pack

Silver Geminis

Have you considered a remap or a tuning box? Or do you fancy a change because your lease is nearly up? :)

(Or have I missed the point completely!! :D)

Two young children?

Get an estate with leather seats.  Not sure how many miles you'll get out of a TSI, but 500 miles between refuelling stops with the TDI is also a bonus when on long journeys with kids, especially if they're sleeping.

So these are the practicalities. If you want more grunt, get the TSI, but I always found that I needed two cars at that stage (young kids) - one practical (the Skoda?) and one for fun (Caterham 160?)

Happy to help :)

Lease is up!!

Go for the TSI - you won't regret it - the power and refinement is in a different league (at least from my diesel MkII). You have to be sensible to get above 40 mpg, but it is a lot more fun. Also more trips to the pumps means more magazines and mints...

My kids do love the pano roof if only to gaze at the trees, clouds and stars when bored. Obviously you'd need an estate for that.

Fair enough - I missed the point :D

DSG works nicely with the TSI. Sometimes I wish that I had specifiedd it on mine, but my previous car was an auto and I wanted a change. The TSI engine is very nice for a 4pot.

Tsi with dsg if you want quiet, rapid refinement. If you want mpg stay with diesel. I get 26-28mpg gentle driving round town in my tsi dsg vrs but its lovely. Dsg does not suit the diesel imo.

Toys? Have as many as you can afford and benefit from ie i use folding mirrors (garage access) all the time. Spacesaver is worth consideration and heated seats and windscreen;-)

Don't not tick the option box and regret it. A lot of things can't be retrofitted afterwards and the ones that do, cost a lot!

OP, whilst the TSI is a fantastic drive, I think you may wanna look at the lease prices before considering it too hard.  There are some great PCH deals for the TDI but, not so many for the TSI !!!

You only live once....get the TSI. You can remap that as well.... Don't worry about fuel economy, it's not terrible but if you worry about fuel costs it's not for you.

Have to agree, just had a 24 hour test drive in a vRS TSi DSG estate, 37.1 mpg & good performance. V. quiet at 80 mph, at about 2,200 rpms.

Only 400 miles on the clock so had to be gentle, but mostly a great car. More techy than SWMBO's vRS but rubbish door cards, better ride too.

Not sure if I want to get rid of my Superb, but a new vRS could be a contender.

The TSI engine in the vRS is very good pull's well and lots of power the economy is good for a 2.0 petrol if your looking for a car with more power it's the one to go for and the vRS 230 will be out soon and that got 230BHP. But you got the TDI for some reason and you can get it remapped to make 220+.but it's up to you there both good car in there known way.

As for extras sunset glass and leather seat are good for kids the sunroof is nice spare wheel is a must canton sound system is very good ( well I like it ) but it's up to you

Gotta do what makes you happy I suppose but there are a few facts worth noting...

TDI is cheaper to lease than TSI

Obvious difference in running costs (with TDI being more frugal, cheaper to tax and likely insure)

Standard (and with a lease car I wouldnt recommend mucking about with it and risking warranty) the performance difference between the two for me wouldnt warrant the additional lease cost/running costs.

If you were buying and fancied tuning one then the TSI is the obvious candidate as a simple map will see you over 300hp...though given the Octavia struggles for traction anyway and doesnt have a proper diff it would probably be fun but a little unrulely.

You could probably get away with a DTUK box on a leased TDI (at your own risk) and you'd see around 235ps and 360-370lb/ft torque....off the mark it'd probably be nearly as quick as a standard TSI and would have stronger mid range punch with all that torque...though again that level of torque through the front wheels would be "interesting" in the wet.

You'll be paying for optional extras almost outright, cost spread across the lease. I'd therefore recommend keeping it simple and only optioning things you feel you need rather than just want.

Probably preaching to the choir a bit but thats my 2 peneth.

Having owned some very good diesels and petrols, I would compare them as follows.

Owning diesel is like having sex with a condom on. It can be very enjoyable and save you a lot of money in the long run, but you always feel like you are missing out on something. Petrol provides a far nicer sensation and puts a bigger smile on your face.

Agree with the metaphor - the sounds you get from a petrol are far more encouraging too. Often leaves me a bit sweaty and euphoric!

Indeed I guess ultimately if the OP is prepared to spend a bit more cash on leasing and running a TSI then why not!
