Columbus :: FLAC + CUE?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

while browsing the forum, while there was talk of FLAC files with the Columbus, something I can't really find information on.

Does the Columbus support CUE files? Most of my FLAC rips are in a single file accompanied by a CUE sheet, which act as a playlist.

I went through the Columbus manual, and it does not list CUE - but was wondering if anyone here has had the chance to check if CUE works.

Could save me a great deal of time in preparation for the car - otherwise will need to split most of my albums to individual files. :(

Thanks!

A CUE file is one which tells your writer how to lay down the track to CD. Nothing to do with a playlist in the sense that you mean.

Not quite. CUE files that usually accompany FLAC's contain time code information. This allows users, with players that support FLAC+CUE to have an entire album in a single FLAC container, as in a single file. Then, the data in the CUE files tells the player how many tracks in the container, and when each starts and ends - hence, you could skip back and forth and treat the single FLAC as multiple tracks.

So if you open this type of CUE file in a software player like foobar2000 (on Windows), for Pink Floyd's Wish you were here, for example, even if it is a single FLAC, the player will show five separate tracks.

That's interesting.

Seems this needs to progress to the AV system too as playing FLAC files via a computer isn't really doing them true justice.

Come to think of it though, I've not seen any multi track single file FLAC's at all. Will need to look harder maybe?

At home, I run a dedicated computer through a DAC clock-locked with the computer. Works out nicely. As for multi track FLACs, it depends on the way they are ripped/encoded. Hence the use for tools such as CUETools, which split and tag multi-track FLAC's. Here is more on this types of CUE sheets:

Lastly, I guess I will have to try it when the car arrives and go from there. Was hoping to use up some free time beforehand to re-organize music.

InSides, if you can upload an example somewhere (not so big to download) I can give it a try.

AFAIK it will just see one big FLAC file as one track and ignore the CUE file

But I could be wrong ..........

Thanks for the offer! The car arrived this morning and have been playing with it most of the day.

You are not wrong. Although FLAC support is surprisingly good, it doesn't seem to even see the CUE files. No matter, just more work for me splitting them up.

Thanks all!
