Amundsen - what to look for when buying?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, been thinking for a while about buying an Amundsen for my 15 plate Roomster.

Ive seen a few on eBay, from the UK and Eastern European sellers. Can anyone give me any advice regarding what to look for and also any pit falls such as problems with the units and also problems fitting.

Cheers

What to look for. Depends what you want. A lot of the Amundsens are going for up over £200 and you could nearly get an Amundsen + for another £50 or so on a good day.

Before buying, make sure the seller has the security code and it's included in the sale. If there's no code then you possibly won't get one if it's been reported stolen. Not good.

Look for one with an unmarked front and no scratches on the screen. Ask the seller for pics of the actual unit for sale if they have stock photos on the ad. You could buy one which is worn on the buttons or scratched on the screen.

You'll need a GPS antenna and if one's included in the sale then all well and good. If not then they're only a fiver or so on Ebay. Not really a deal breaker.

After that, get the newest unit you can for your budget. If you do go up to the Amundsen + unit then there are many variations of spec on that. Ask again before buying one.

Oh, and if it's advertised as having no maps then walk away. The maps are preloaded onto the internal flash memory on the Amundsen + and on an SD card on the Amundsen. Maps for the Amundsen + are well over £100, and the Amundsen although being easier to get maps for might indicate a problem with the unit.

As above i grabbed mine from a euro selling was about £250 i think had the code and pics of the actual unit i was buying

Well worth the money

also you might need the ariel adaptor :)

Hmm prices you guys have seen them for are loads cheaper than Ive seen them for. Not going to do anything in a hurry but would like to upgrade. Have read threads on here that people have had issues and ended up plugging into a diagnostic machine to fix.

Yes the maps have bothered me.

My current radio which I think is a Swing is fine but want something better with the Sat Nav. Hope I dont lose the reversing indicators and of course I dont have maxidot and steering wheel controls either.

Cheers so far guys

Whereabouts in Yorkshire are you?

Whereabouts in Yorkshire are you?

Just dropped you a PM

I have a Columbus for sale, it's a 2008 model but works well. I'm after the £250 I paid for it and would be able to deliver it to you personally at for fuel money depending on where you are. If you're interested PM me.

Thanks for the offer, thats kind of you to think of me. Turns out that indeed the Columbus sounds like the better option but I need to do some more digging as the BT Phone connectivity is quite important to me which seems like an extra purchase too. Thanks to RustyNuts Ive had some great advice and now know I need to do some more digging so that Im buying the correct unit.
