New Caliper required?

Featured Replies

I have a problem with the off side rear brake caliper whist fitting new pads, I can't wind the piston back. It was very stiff to begin with but I did mange to get it to turn, however as much as try I can't get the piston to retract. I am thinking new caliper time or is there a trick I am missing?

At risk of stating the obvious. You've got the brake fluid cap off right?

Yes the cap was removed, although the N/S piston was a pain to wind back it did go back.

There's a place over your way who'll fix it. Brake Caliper Specialist, Long Eaton.

That looks handy, thanks.

Sounds like the rubber seal (not the dust skirt) has gone hard & brittle with age & heat. repair kit of two dust skirts & two seals to do both the front caliper costs circa £23 from dealers I think.....takes some fiddling to re-assemble & you need to re-sand (fine wet/dry the piston & bore). Did all 4 on my old fabia..........

However if the caliper is okish then most auto factors will allow you to buy a re-con (as good as new) then they purchase your old one later.......or go to a specialish brake refurb place......

Thanks for the suggestions, had another go this morning and managed to get the piston to go back without too much drama. I think the Plusgas that I used 2 weeks ago helped.

Interestingly since we bought the car I've never been too happy with MPG, just done a test run and according to the trip computer I seem to have found another 10MPG. The caliper must have been sticking albeit slightly.
