Is my clutch on the way out?

Featured Replies

Hi there.

Over the past week my clutch has felt vague when engaging gears to the point where there is little clutch bite when the gear is engaged (if I don't match the revs ).

However when driving I don't notice any slip and the car seems to drive just as it normally does.

Also is the clutch related to the brakes in any way? Probably a stupid question but I heard that the brake servos work differently on a diesel. So if my clutch is failing could this also effect the brake power? Have had a couple of times recently where the brakes also felt vague whereas they are normally sharp and have been replaced this year.

Thanks

Doug

The cluth is using hydraulic oil from the brakes reservoir. So they are related somehow. I replaced my brake fluid, had my clutch and brakes bleeded and it is running like a dream now.

The brakes and clutch are related via the master cylinder, few pipes go to the brakes and the other goes to the slave cylinder in the gear box

not wanting to hi-jack this tread but can you adjust the hight of the pedal for the clutch? Mine seems pretty low.

No, it's not adjustable.

so I guess my clutch is on the way out? :(

I'd imagine there's something wrong if the pedal is low. Maybe check the pedal unit itself? They are plastic and can fail.

If the bite is low it means the clutch is new.

If the bite is high it means the clutch is wearing thin and needs replacing.

I thought he meant the pedal position is low as he didn't mention biting point.

It's a pedal, they bite at different places, not much you can do to adjust a hydraulic clutch.

The pedal could be broken, no way to know without more details really.

Mine bites somewhere in the middle, but when the engine is cold and/or I have to make a few moves to get out the parking lot , it may happen to change the bitting point closer to the floor. I think they do have a mind of their own.

Sorry I should have mentioned. The clutch bites is low. TBH I haven't noticed it slip and it only came to light when my father was drove it the other day.

Meh, don't worry about it then, it's probably only a good thing.

It's possible there's some air in the system. You could try bleeding it. On the other hand, it might just be the way your clutch is.
