Early motor oil change?

Hi,

I've already driven 14 000km in 4 months now, had 4km on the clock at delivery. Should I get an early service, get rid of the "run-in-dirty" oil?

I would always recommend a cars first ever oil change is at 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is reached first.

 

14,000km + 4,000km = 18,000km which equates to 11,000 miles.

 

I would get it done now.

 

After this as you are a high mileage driver I'd ensure that the service computer is set to variable or long life intervals (approx. up to 2 years or 20,000 miles). With your mileage your car will see fresh oil at least once a year.

+4000 km? No, I had only 4km on the clock when delivered from factory.☺ So, 14004 km all in all now. Should I do the oil change or wait until 10,000 miles precise?

Do you know if  the car set to variable servicing? If so, it will give you a 1000km (possibly more) notice that it needs a service. If not, as you're concerned, I'd get the service / oil change done now, have the car set to variable servicing at the same time and then you'll get the warning automatically in future.

Haven't discussed anything else with my dealer.

Then I'll wait for the service icon to pop up when it's time? In 2 years or 30 000km..?

Cant say when, as it is dependent on your driving style, road conditions, distance travelled, urban or motorway, etc., etc. The service indicator will come up on your maxdot something like thispost-109575-0-57519900-1413274169_thumb.

Sorry my mistake, I read 4km as 4K km!

 

Either way you are fast approaching the 10,000 mile mark.

 

Here in the UK all our diesel engined Superbs are set to variable (or long life) servicing from the factory, the problem is that a few unscrupulous dealers change the car from variable to fixed (10,000 miles or 12 months - whichever is reached first) before delivery to the customer to ensure they see you and your wallet more often!

 

Hopefully the Swedish dealers are a little different!

When on variable and doing no more than 10k miles per year is it necessary to maybe have just an oil change done at around halfway... (12 months or so)... between the variable services? A work colleague and myself were discussing this as he has an A5 diesel on variable and he was thinking it was worth doing where as i was more on the fence. :)

I did the oil change couple of days ago and I had 6600km on clock it took only an hour and 96 euros☺

New engine produce lots of little metal pieces so I want to be sure my engine is pure from inside...

1.8TSI is a bit problematic engine anyway so why not clean the running-in dust from it...

That's actually a good idea. I don't know why Skoda don't do it themselves when they have them back to check

Skoda salesman is an old client of mine and he started to laugh when heard that I want to change oil allready....after oil change he said:" I did it myself on my new octavia". I think its good to know that your car lifejuice is new and engine is thankful to you aswell☺

next oil change is still after 15000km as on manual.

fixed service schedule is 15,000km /12 months - whichever is first.  Your about to hit the 15,000km.  Yes, get the oil & filter changed.

 

I'm not a fan of variable service.  It's designed for fleet managers & short term ownership.

Just curious, but if your colleague is covering less than 10,000 miles per year there is little point to him running variable, he would be far better changing the onboard computer to fixed.

 

This way the car asks for a service every 12 months or 10,000 miles and the need to remember to carry out the intermediate service if set to variable goes away.

We're both the same.... Both do around 10,000 miles per year..... He was just thinking about changing the oil as it's the first car he has had on variable where the services are going to be around 18-24 months apart..... It's also my first variable car too but I'd not even considered doing an oil change in between services.... I just assumed it was ok to leave it till it said it needed doing etc.....

I think it comes down to personal preference, not sure I'd be comfortable letting my car go up to 20,000 miles or through two winters on the same oil.

If you are on variable & doing an interim service then you aren't really on variable anymore... are you?

Read somewhere that fully synthetic oil is good for 60,000 miles.

A bit of a sweeping statement?

 

60,000 miles round town or 60,000 miles on a motorway?

 

60,000 miles at 1,500rpm or 60,000 miles at 3,000 rpm?

 

60,000 miles in a hot climate, or 60,000 miles in the frozen north?

 

Too many variables to make a claim on a set mileage for me.

Do you mean PAO or Ester based synthetics? Or API group3 base stock?  

 

Would that be with 60k filter changes or 15k filter changes

 

Full flow or bypass filters?

 

Regular replenishment of the additive pack?

 

Mobil (??) did some endurance testing of their oil a while back.  possibly the UOA came up good after 60,000km but I think they ran the car day & night at fairly constant speeds.  It never would have cooled down or done any stop/start - ideal conditions for getting maximum life out of the oil.

 

I've seen oil after it's done 30,000km.  It's not pretty.
