Fitted a Scosche Magic Mount in the Rapid

Featured Replies

Hello

As we all know, the one Brodit mount option is not great as it covers a vent. The metal dash mount bracket option is too low down so anyone sitting in the front passenger seat will knee it (plus it is badly machined and won't fit without significant filing down of the screw mount edges) and like many here, I'm not a fan of suction cups on the windows.

I have the Skoda cup holder phone holder - which is fine for stoping the phone from going flying if I have to brake hard, but doesn't allow you to see the screen or get a power or MDI cable to it. It is also no use for a phone bigger than an iPhone 5 series.

So, after much research, I purchased one of these:

The base sticks onto the dash using a decent 3M pad. The main magnetic mount then attaches via a ball joint and tension nut. The result is a very sturdy phone holder at the right height for seeing it as well as reaching it with the MDI cable.

After sticking the base to the dash and applying force for about 5 minutes, I left it for 2 days to cure before attaching the rest via the ball joint. The result is a base that is stuck fast to the dash (but also won't mark it if I ever remove it.

The metal plates that the magnet mount sticks to are also very practical. Scosche include two - a small stick-on one, and a large very thin plate that can be either stuck to a phone or phone case, or sandwiched in-between the phone and case. I do the latter as my case is designed to dock into an extended battery sleeve, and a stick-on mount on the back would get in the way. By sandwiching the plate between the phone and the inside of the case, it both sticks to the mount and does not prevent me using my extended battery.

I got one of those cd mount ones... works a treat and makes the most out of a useless slot ;)

Very informative post, thanks, and I am going to have a good think about the Scosche mount - especially v. the comments about the Brodit offering.

At the moment my iPhone is skating around on the passenger seat, so it definitely needs a home.

How can we be confident that the mount won't mark if/when removed?

Cheers,

Not a fan of that type of phone holder - the CD slot is not a load bearing orifice, I'd rather not break or bend the opening.

As mention above it's held on with a genuine 3M sticky pad (genuine 3M pads don't mark).

Or buy an Amundsen [emoji6]

Save the dash clutter.

Sorry pointless response I'll get my coat [emoji57]

That may yet be back on the cards. The Garmin is playing up (software bug tat has rendered traffic info next to useless rather than hardware) and Garmin are not being helpful at all in resolving the issue.

If they don't make some progress soon the Garmin will be returned and I will be rethinking the integrated nav option again.

I Phone maps are fine!

Garmin are terrible for anything. They can't even sort out a simple PID problem with the Citigo [emoji57]

That looks like just what I need - currently £13.99 on Amazon and a version without the ball joint for £11.15 .  My only concern is whether the metal plate/magnet will interfere with the sat-nav software function on my phone?  I have found a couple of reviews that state that sat-nav on a phone is not affected but any compass function is.  At that price I think I will buy one to try.

Modern navigation software use data from the phone's compass sensor to detect a change in direction earlier and update the position on the map more precisely than with the GPS data alone.

With this mount, I suspect that the compass will not work correctly and the map position will be less acurate. Navigation should still work though.

I can confirm the magnet does not interfere with Sat Nav reception on the phone.

Thanks for your reply.  I should receive the mount in a couple of days and look forward to fitting it in my Octavia.

Same mount fitted here and in same location. Thanks to Chris for the research.

I have not fully adhered the large thin plate to the inside of the phone cover, just sticky taped it on. Makes it easy to transfer between phones or covers when required.
