Does this look like a new turbo to you!?

So I've finally pulled my finger out and fitted the second hand turbo. Seems to run ok other than a knackered alternator.

I also stripped the old turbo down to see the what damaged has been caused. I found this, might be interesting for some people.

Damage due to dirty air, more than likely an after market one.

Aftermarket what? Air filter. I was running a brand new OEM filter. Which has been checked and is fine. I couldn't believe the amount for play in the bearing. Still drove it for 2000 miles in that condition lol.

Forgot to post this picture. The elbow from the turbo

An aftermarket air filter.

A genuine oem air filter wouldn't let that dirt in.

I'd check the air box and turbo intake pipe for dirt.

Pull the pipe off the crank case breather and shine ska torch in the turbo intake pipe and see if it's pitted with dirt also.

Also worn lugs on the pipes can lead to overboosting and damaging the turbo.
