Does this look like a new turbo to you guys?

Depends if it's described as new or reconditioned.

It looks like it has slightly wear on the fins but still has the marks on from being balanced so is classed as a serviceable item.

I bought brand new from a highly reputable company at a cost of over £600 (Pd150)

Cheers, I'll wait and see people say before contacting the company.

I say that impeller has been run up in dirty air or has been pushed around on a surface unprotected, maybe not in the turbo that you've just bought but it's definitely what I would class as a 'second', send 'em a picture and tell 'em you're prepared to keep it in return for a partial refund since it's serviceable.

 

Edit: You could always fit a K&N and then it'll polish itself smooth again  :sun:

Ok well that turbo was actually fitted in November and has now failed, so I'm thinking maybe it was a faulty product. Were do you think I stand, if anywhere?

Difficult one that as you didn't send it back when bought as new after finding signs of wear.  I don't think you'd have a leg to stand on now unless you informed the company and sent photos, relying on good will.  You could always quote your statutory consumer rights and say it wasn't of satisfactory quality as it's failed so quickly plus had marks on it.  I think that the onus may have been on you to report it back to them within a reasonable time of purchase and before you fitted it. Did it carry a warranty?

I can always see both sides of an argument....

Did you find out why the original turbo failed?

Precautions need to be took when fitting new turbos such as a good engine flush, oil pickup pipe cleaned, oil feed pipe cleaned/replaced and a good service with oil and filter and air filter with the full intake side cleaned up.

Those are marks left over from dynamic balancing.

Was that picture taken when you bought the turbo or when it failed? If it was taken when it failed they wont warranty it due to the marks in the impeller fins. What filter are you using?

That's the original turbo. I've been told it failed due to over boosting or failed bearing. I did find 2 holes in the intercooler so that was replaced. Everything was taken off cleaned and replaced following the suppliers instructions. And it was given a full service and another oil change 2-3 miles after fitment. The turbos only 6 months old.

it's a standard bosch paper filter.

I understand I should have contacted the company with any queries, however the turbo turned up in all the original garret packing/box with all the paperwork And not seeing a turbo up close before prior to seeing my knackered on I asummed it was normal.

OK, that's well and truly donald ducked, I'm shocked that has happened in 6 months, it's certainly not a warranty issue I'm afraid, there's no way that marking and light scratching led to this.

 

You need to be very sure that your intake system is surgically clean and totally sealed against dirt ingress.

Oaft that's fooked! Looks like you've had a bag of grit strapped to the intake I would definitely clean out the intake and change the air filter your running.

all pipe work was removed, extensively cleaned, as was the airbox. The plastic turbo covers were only removed as the pipes were about to be fitted. I can't understand how it's been fine all this time then this has happened. 6 months and 10k later.

That's so bad it almost looks cool! :D

But as has been said, looks like dirty air has been getting sucked through it, possibly from aftermarket air filters.

That failure is turbo surge, plain and simple... it's spotlessly clean, there's no dirt in there chaps.

turbo surge is caused by over boost conditions, sometimes they shatter rather than bending the impeller blades, you were very lucky.

So I can rule out faulty turbo. I was thinking about it oveeboosting due to the way the vanes have buckled, would that also do the damage to the vane edges? The cars running approximately 1.65 bar of boost on 130k mile old boost pipes so maybe one of the is worn allowing a boost leak.

I'm going to have a look at my air filter tonight to see if there's any sihh of that having damage. Is I posted earlier its a Bosch paper filter so I'd have thought filration would be fine. I run these filters for 6 years without a problem.

If it's an overspeed/overboost problem, check, check and recheck your boost pipes and the turbo VNT pipes and mech.

 

Question: Do you run a decat and bigger zorst as well as the remap?

Nope completely standard bar the pd150 turbo. Turbo boost and vnt has been checked by hidden power. There are some movement in the boost pipes when you grab them and wriggle them about.

Thats normal to have movement in the boost ducting on the pd diesels, they only pull up tight when its on boost.

if they pull tight how do you get boost leaks When accelerating.

You will get a little movement in the pipes but excessive movement indicates worn lugs in the pipes oh and they don't pull tight when on boost

I don't know if that's adds any value at all to this discussion but below is a picture I took when fitting a garret turbo to my fabia vrs which I bought off eBay, which had done unknown milage. All I did know is it came off a car that had done 160k. I paid £120 for it, it was in very good mechanical condition and so far I have had 8k trouble free miles out of it. I suppose I'm thinking along the lines of, your new turbo should not have looked like the first picture you posted.

Thanks for that, I've contacted the company and they've said the marks are from balancing at the factory. I've decided to buy a used turbo and run that with regular inspections to make sure it's running correctly then if everything's all good ill be replacing with a hybrid and fMic.
