Wind noise inside the car >50mph

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Since the summer is near and I am planing my road trips, I want to fix a pretty annoying thing. When I get over 50mph there is a lot of wind noise inside the car and this is really not funny. When driving over 60-70 it gets even worse. In winter time, my passengers from the back seats can feel some cold air getting in the car.

I believe there should be some door seals that got worned, since my car has been built in 2000. Do you have any idea which seals should I replace ? I hope I don't have the swap all of them.

Thank you !

Get passengers in the car, do 50mph, get them to pull the door inwards and see if it stops or changes note at least.

It's usually the rubber seal that sits between the door and the inside of the car that goes, but I've never had to change one because of wind noise.

I see. I'll try tomorrow to test if pulling the door will change anything, but I doubt there will be any change.

Would it be a good idea to check the window seals as well?

I'd think it's either the door sealing rubbers as per #2, or window(s) not fully closed, which is easy to check.

The windows are fully closed most of the time, especially when travelling at high speeds.

I used to have a Mk I Octy which needed minor impact damage on the driver's door repaired. After coming back from the body shop there was terrible wind noise -- the body shop fixed it completely by readjusting the door hinges. Is there any chance your door might not be sitting squarely in its frame?

My 'eye meter' can't detect anything wrong with the frame or doors from exterior. It's really straight, TBH.  All doors can easily be opened and closed both from inside and outside and they fit perfect with the rest of the car frame.

I'd only blame the door and / or window seals. It's like one of the windows wouldn't be all the way up. I've checked, double checked and triple checked that.

Maybe adjusting the door hinges would help also, but I am not sure it's a DIY thing. I'd better let a pro do it.

That is something I had not thought of.

My car is quite noisy on the roads, at anywhere over sixty miles per hour. Mainly road noise, although a few friends have asked if a door/ window is open. I put it down to being the budget (at the time) marque of Vag.

Pulling up the music volume temporarily solves it  . I'm mostly doing 55-75, but I do fancy having a quiet ride.

Jeremy sums it up best: ”When was the last time you just got up and went for a drive? Not to anywhere, not for anything. Just a drive.” and  “This is brilliant. No phones. No Kids. No interruptions. It’s just me, in my little metal shell. Time to think, time to work stuff out“

I can't think when it's noisy out there  :dull: .

Other possibilities:-

One of the window frames is bend slightly out from the body. If so it will only be an mm or 2.

If you have one, is the sunroof closed properly?

@Ken: my car doesn't have a sunroof. What is an mm or 2?

My dirty mind thought at M&Ms at that hour .. mmm ... one would have been just fine, but 2 ... just wow  :notme:

I like the yellow m&ms, but the peanut ones are nice too.
