New Fabia VRS 1.4TSI owner

Featured Replies

After much consideration and research I've bought a late 2012 Skoda Fabia VRS, such a great car with so many posts that could (and hopefully not 'should') have put me off.  I finally found myself in a position to buy a decent car, always had bangers in the past, would have loved a Toyota Supra twin turbo, Skyline, Scooby, or even an Octavia VRS but am sharing the car with my 62 year old Mum who is only able (due to medical reasons) drive an automatic and due to confidence, only drive a relatively small car......Fabia VRS was really the only choice.  Polo GTI maybe but overpriced, Seat Ibiza Cupra impractical with only 3 doors.  Plus I love the fact the Fabia doesn't really look like a hot hatch.

Bought from an approved new and used Skoda dealer, paid a little over the odds but I was happy to do so because:

It's silver with black roof and wheels.  Super lazy me says silver is best at hiding dirt and black alloys best at hiding brake dust :D

Plus silver is always in fashion, I love the white ones but heck they'll need cleaning every day and a few years down the line silver will always be the new black/white/blue/the next seasons fad.  At least I hope so.

It's got the red (ish) interior.

And with 6 months standard Skoda warranty left, I can buy the 2 years extended warranty...

Oh and it had a new engine just over 6 months ago, originally a CAVE engine but the dealer advised it had the new CHTE engine...or is that CTHE?  However the V5 and all the paperwork still shows the original engine.....I'm waiting on the dealer to obtain the new engine number and have emailed Skoda UK regarding this but I'm still slightly nervous that the 'new engine' is perhaps still a CAVE....however time will tell.

So here's my car....hmm can't upload a picture bigger than 1kb???  Admin!!!?

Welcome to the forum.

Enjoy the car.

You will find with a Search or a Google at least 2 threads started by me on CAVE / CTHE Replacement Engines & Engine Numbers

and Skoda UK & Dealers not Changing Engine Numbers, Saying the Engine Came Blank, and Engine Numbers were Stamped

and other total nonsense from Skoda UK.

Some members had replies from Skoda to enquires and others were replied to with untrue information.

Members have informed the DVLA / VOSA.

*Some of the under 3,000 Mk2 vRS in the country are now on a replacement engine to replace the replacement and a couple i know of

are now on the 4th engine, these are cars under 4 years old.*

If indeed the CAVE Engine car does now have a CTHE engine in, there will be a New CTHE ECU fitted.

Last week at the gathering of Mk2 Owners there was around 16 Mk2 vRS there and 2 CAVE cars did indeed now have a CTHE

as a Replacement, and these had a CTHE ECU fitted.

The person that had the car when the engine was changed might have managed to get an Extended Warranty

on the Replacement Engine beyond the cars 3 Year Manufacturers Warranty.

Some Members have had this from Skoda UK as part of their settlement, other not.

there is a thread started by vRSkeith.  'Consistant treatment engine replacement'  as a search should find that thread.

Check if your car has required and had the Service Campaign Field action on the DSG (DQ200 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch)

This started on May 2013, and even though the Engine was Replaced do not just assume the Workshop doing the engine did it.

Free,

Synthetic OIl changed to Mineral and a ECU Software Update, and a Sticker in the Boot to show it is done.

(Like really what should happen with replacement Engine, New Stickers arrive with the Engine for the Service Book & to put in the Boot.)

EDIT.

I have Bumped the thread in the Fabia MK2 Section for you on the DVLA / SKODA UK and Engine Numbers

and changes or not on the V5 & DVLA Database.

Odd the Engines and Parts have Unique Numbers as they Travel the World for VW & Governments,

but in the UK owners are at risk of cars being stolen and the Engine having Stamped at Dealer Numbers,

or Just Bar Codes, and some might by cars that are Ringers, maybe in the future a VOSA Roadside Stop

will pick up what VW / Skoda / Seat / Audi have been doing.

Edit* Is there a simple way for me to tell whether it has the CTHE engine?  Going to check for a "sticker in the boot" but anything else I might see under the bonnet that is obvious?

I have read most of the posts you've linked previously but kind of overwhlemed myself with information, now that I have the car I do indeed love it and have been like a kid at Christmas, it's made me feel 10 years younger.

I've already emailed Skoda UK as the dealer was, after verbally telling me it had the DSG field campaign, a new CTHE engine in October 2014, ECU software updates etc etc, a little slow in providing the information in writing.  Skoda UK replied...

"Thank you for your email dated 18 May 2015 regarding the purchase of a ŠKODA Fabia.

I have checked our records and I can confirm that this vehicle did have a new engine fitted on the 25.10.2014. This new engine
will still be covered by the Manufacturer’s warranty up to the 06.09.2015, provided the car has not driven more then 60,000
miles.

I can also confirm that there are no outstanding recalls or field actions on this vehicle."

The dealer then sent me a printout of work carried out as held on Skoda's database but it did not show an engine replacement, nor a DSG field action, nor anything I was actually interested in.  From what I could see it was an incomplete window into the life of the vehicle.  However I was happy to proceed with the purchase as the email from Skoda UK seemed to confirm what the dealer had said.

Upon collecting the vehicle, I noticed on the invoice the engine number was stated as CAVE....So I was fuming, asked about the CTHE....the salesperson took the car to the mechanic and came back 5 minutes later saying the engine would have to come out to see the engine number but she would contact the Skoda garage where the vehicle was previously serviced and Skoda UK and see whether they could provide the new engine number, as I was insisting that DVLA need to be notified....all from what I have read on these forums.  I have taken the car and am waiting for the dealer to contact me, I have also emailed Skoda UK and asked for the new engine number.

Time will tell whether they come back with a proper CTHE engine number or come back and say "oh we just stuck the old engine number on the new engine".

Such a great car, fingers crossed I've got a good one but shame on Skoda making me feel like I'm playing roulette.

Chill.

The car will be just fine.

It really does not matter if it is a CAVE or a CTHE other than the Salesperson Mis-leading you,

then if they did you have comeback.

Most say, 'It has the most recent engine fitted', or 'It has all the latest Modifications that they did to the engines'.

They know jack **** about CAVE / CTHE or the internals of the Engines, some say it is Piston & Rings only which it is not.

You could send me a picture of the ECU and it might indicate to be if they fitted a CTHE Engine.

It will be extrnally different from the CAVE ECU, and they can not just Update a CAVE ECU if a CTHE Engine was fitted.

** So the Invoice and cost of the Engine Transplant will include a Engine & ECU & will be a Number for a CTHE Engine

not a CAVE.**

The Dealer that Fitted the Engine and Skoda CS UK Know the Engine Number, have the Invoice for the engine Supplied,]THey know the engines Build Date,

& they should supply a letter confirming the engine number & date of Change for Owners or the DVLA in the Future.

......................................................

You could send me the Registration Number by PM so that i can check if i know of your car or anything about it.

You might see the post on an identical car that i brought back up in the forum yesterday.

Same Colour, 66,000 miles, First Registered in Inverness,  New Engine fitted in Glasgow by Henrys late last year & sold to a Briskoda Member by Arnold Clark Dumbarton.

  This one. > SY12 L** <

See post #42.  Skoda managed to get the records there. But then that is the Issue with their Computer b

System, Dealers need to add everything correctly.  & Customer Services need to be a bit more efficient or just honest.

........................................................

Just have fun and drive the car, and if you have a Skoda Approved Used Car the Warranty mist be for 12 months from Purchase,

not just the remainder of the Original Manufacturers Warranty.

The ECU is behind the Black Air Box.

If you could take some pics of the Silver Casing.  Top & Side thanks.

ECU picks now on

https://www.flickr.com/photos/132732277@N04/

As is a picture of the sticker in the boot....clearly showing a CAVE engine :D

Yes 12 months used warranty but am planning on getting the 2 year extended warranty in September as the original 3 years expires then, gives me a bit more peace of mind.

It's crazy that the engine changes aren't properly documented, especially since I read here that the CAVE and CTHE use different oil, one uses synthetic, the other mineral?  Not sure how much difference it makes if I....or the servicing mechanic, put the wrong oil in because we thought it was a CTHE when it was a CAVE or vice versa....

Anyway, I appreciate all the help and knowledge briskoda supplies, going to do my best to stop being a negative nancy and get on with loving my new motor.

Good News i think.

Looks like you have a new ECU fitted to run your new engine

& not the ECU as was fitted to a CAVE Engine car from 2012.

....................................

*Skoda UK Customer Services should be able to confirm that easily enough, they paid for the Engine, ECU and Labour costs.*

IMPORTANT.

The engines do not use different oils.   (Do not mix up the Engine from the Gearbox.)

CAVE Engines used 5w 30 Full Synthetic. (VW504 00) Long Life ,

But on Fixed Servicing 9,400 miles / 372 days,

you can use 5w 40 Full Synthetic (VW 502 00)  If the Car was on Variable servicing / Flexible Servicing you need the 5w 30 Long Life Oil.

CTHE Engines came with 5W 30 Long Life Oil and on Variable Servicing ,

but many change the oil at 10,000 miles or less and use 5w 40 Full Synthetic.

...............

You do not use 'Mineral Oil'  in either engine.

*Synthetic Oil* was in Some Sealed for Life DQ200 DSG fitted at the Factory, 2009- 2013 but not in all of them,

the Service Campaign was to change the Oil in the Gearbox, *to Mineral Oil*

and update the Software of the DSG.

http://skoda.co.nz/news/dsg-service-campaign

eg as Skoda NZ did it.

Hit or miss in the UK.

George, I have just read this thread and I must Congratulate you on your knowlage of the Fabia MKII Vrs.

You are a credit to Briskoda. Keep up the good work.

AG

Cheers.

Barefootkid.

Just as a final on it. Maybe Send an Email to Skoda UK Customer Services and ask for a Call back. Or call them.

Get them to confirm that your DSG had Mineral Oil & not Synthetic Oil in at the Factory or has had the Service Campaign work done

since to have the Oil Changed.

It might have been done at the Engine Replacement,  but that should be on the computer.

Congrats on your purchase. I have to say the black on silver looks really nice.

Enjoy your new motor and I hope that your Mum has fun in it as well.

As George suggest check with Skoda CS UK regarding an extended warranty that should have been issued with the new engine.

I would suggest that the dealer who fitted the new engine should have put that in writing in the back of your service record booklet.

My partners dealer did that when installing a new engine in her 2011 CAVE - The New engine was a CTHE .

She got a 1 year extension to Engine and componentry disturbed by installing the new engine.

Sittingbull on here, had a 2 year warranty issued by Skoda CS UK after giving them a hard time.

Thanks to goneoffski, george, so many thanks for all your advice.

Thanks to mmmRacer, i love the way the car looks.

And thanks to vrskeith, my Mum is still a little nervous but tomorrow she's going to get a reminder of how to show people what her little car can do, 200 mile round journey to North Wales.  Unfortunately there is absolutley nothing listed or written in the service record that I can see about the engine swap, I've asked the dealer who sold me the car to confirm some details.  Before I bought the car I emailed Skoda CS UK who confirmed a new engine and no work needed, such as the DSG service campaign......

I replied to the rep asking for an engine number but nearly one week after buying the car neither the dealer nor Skoda CS UK have replied.  I have Thursday off to celebrate my Mums birthday and Friday to go sort out any concerns....I'll update once I know more.

Thanks again, I really appreciate this wealth of knowledge Briskoda provides

Just as a final note on this thread...

Turns out the car had a new CAVE engine fitted October 2013, the salesperson at the dealer either told me what I wanted to hear or simply didn't know enough about the cars - that it had a CTHE engine - but she and the mechanic/technical guy are confident enough it's a good engine with no issues and the main guy at the dealership offered me a full refund due to the misinformation but...everything else is as it should be, DSG service campaign, mineral oil, ecu software etc

Long story short, I love the car too much to send it back, it's the perfect colour combination and has all the extras I want or need, I'm getting the 2 years extended manufacturers warranty for peace of mind.  Been making excuses to go on long day trips once a week to country parks and beaches 100 mile away just to enjoy the drive even though there's plenty of beautiful places much closer.

Now I just want some mud flaps for it....

Hi guys

I have just become the proud owner of a white (with black roof) Fabia VRS and I am so far very impressed after only having it for a week. its on a 12 plate.

I was wondering if anyone on here has had a Bluefin remap installed? I am thinking about getting 1 but wanted some opinions first before parting with my hard earned cash.

any help you can give will be appreciated

cheers
