Think my Netgear DG834G is packing up... hellllp

Featured Replies

,.. Its only sending out the wireless signal very intermittently. Hardwired PCs (i.e just mine) are working fine, but wireless works when I reboot the router for around 5 minutes then the light on the router goes solid green and my laptop (and others in the house) lose signal.

is there anyone techie with one of these that can point me toward any diagnostics I can do, please? I'm not very good at exploring the control panel for this router - I can just about setup new users for access... :D

Anyway the router can tell why the hell its stopping sending out the wireless signal?

Edit: I may have stmbled across something in the logs - lots of mentions of "LCP down" after its been allowed to come up (i.e on a power up or reboot of the modem - happens just seconds after)

Normal advice would be to upgrade the firmware.

Also you could try a hard reset - using the button on the back.

A good idea to back up your settings before hand, this can be done by logging into the router.

I recently upgraded from the DG834 to the DG834GT, and it works fantastic.

As Stu says backup the settings and upgrade the firmware. I can't think of anything else to be of help, sorry.

DG834GT does work rather well .....two PCs on wireless and mine hardwired.......try the reset it may work ......updated mine when I got it(firmware) quite a big file

Well updated, even tried restoring factory settings and reinstalling the last upgrade for this machine.... Wireless is still dropped. This "LCP" thing appears to be up again though - It seems to bring up the LCP after CHAPS authentifying....

Hard reset now methinks. :(

Well, ****** to it. Put a call in to Netgear techie support as all my attempts at upgrading / rebooting is not bringing back the wireless. Think I may be another 10 days without a router whilst the swap and a new one is sent to me. Two routers up the spout in 8 months - not good for reliability really. :thumbdwn:

Probably all you can do Jason, shame you've had two go in such a short time :thumbdwn:

LCP will refer to Link Control Protocol I would imagine. It's what the router will use to establish a link with your ISP, and sort out things like arranging for TCP/IP packets of the right size to be sent down the line. It generally keeps an eye on things, that data's being sent in the right way, and that the router can see a proper connection to your ISP. If it's failing at the CHAPS stage, then the router's obviously having trouble setting something up. I'm afraid I've no idea what that might be, if the logs aren't any more revealing?

Hope you get it sorted quickly anyway.

Doubt LCP is anything to do with wireless then. I'm happily hooked up on here using it, but obviously unless I fit a 30 metre long patch cable my mate downstairs has no internet. :(

Hmm, that is interesting. Had missed the bit in your post about the wired part of the network being OK. I'm as confused as you are then.

Unless the wireless is having trouble sending/receiving data, but you wouldn't get a CHAPS authentication error with that . CHAPS is to do with your router's relationship with your ISP, makes sure your username/password/config details are correct etc.

Have you tried taking all encryption/security settings down to minimum, then trying to connect?

Apart from that - sorry mate, still a return to Netgear me thinks. Was it a Netgear that failed the first time too?

It was the same model that failed - Was killed by a lightning storm - Didn't tell netgear that though :D This one just seems to be not putting out wireless only.

My security is down to a minimum - basically I OK the DNS and thats that. But my laptop doesn't even see the router at all - which it does normally even if I've not allowed it (it see's it but can't connect until I OK its DNS)

Shall see what Netgear come back to me with.

you sure its not the adaptor of the machine you are trying to connect to the router?

Nope - All 4 laptops are failing to connect at the same time. I've just tried hardwiring my laptop upstairs in to the router and it works on a LAN basis fine, like my usual desktop PC. It's just wireless that's up the spout

Pretty sure this is a common problem on these Netgears as a few people at work had similar problems (including very weak signal). I believe updating to the latest firmware solved it....... Google might help you too :D

Check which version of firmware you have.....wouldn't upgrade to the 4.0/0.4...can't actually remember which version it is....as it's crap.

Anything beyond this is fine.......the 0.4/4.0 version intermittently drop the link and requires a router reboot.

There should be an archived thread about this....Howard had experienced the problem when upgrading.

The LCP thing you are seeing is due to the router trying to reconnect to your ISP which is why you see it after a reboot. Sometimes you find that they try to conect before it fully ready. I have set many of the netgears routers up in staff members houses over the year and have seen this when you try to connect to their provider at first, then it connects fine. So I reckon its nothing to worry about.

Wireless on the other hand is very hit and miss with these routers. We have had so many of these back to us and replaced that it just not worth the effort to stay using them. We have had many that just stop working on wireless after a year of no problems with no warnings. Does the wireless light go out on the router to show its not sending out the wireless signal? or is it just a case of the light stays on and theres no connectivity?

Also the wireless can be very tempremental. I remember setting one up that wouldnt work at all until I moved the ladies cordless phone away and cordless doorbell. If your firmware upgrade and setup of the router doesnt get you anywhere it's worth making sure you dont have anything near it that could be interfering with the signal.

If you can afford to replace it I would buy yourself the equivalent Linksys router and be shot of the netgear.

Well, while its under warranty still I'm going to go for a direct replacement and hope its OK. The wireless light is on permanently, solid - no blipping like the other port lights do during activity.

It could be to do with the antenna's or interference, Have you brought the laptop into the same room as the router to see if it connects in there?

Has a neighbour now gone wireless, and your now having conflicts with frequencies. Have you tried a different channel from the default one.

Netgear advisd me to enablke the WEP thing, but thats done no good. Pretty sure no enighbour has gone wireless as my laptop would pick it up, but shouldn't be able to access it.

My laptop is about 24" from the router aerial and nowt, nothing, diddly squat. :D Shame there's no decent onboard diagnostics on the router which can tell why its not sending out any wireless signal at all. :(

That's what differentiates wireless routers home users buy, and the other end of the market. Although I've no experience of them, there must be managed wirless routers about these days. Much the same as the managed wired routers we use at work. Much more control, more more informative, much more money!! :D

We use a Draytek broadband router at work (no wireless yet). Good piece of kit, but more expensive than others. Comes with plenty of diagnostic software (which I don't really understand :o:o )

We had draytek routers at my old place. they were very good, although as you said they are lots more expensive.

We're on a Cisco 2600 for the WAN router, and HP managed switches for the rest of the building. Don't really understand the Cisco but the HPs are good bits of kit, and give you lots of info when you need it :)

Steve

jason your fabia isnt parked near ish the router is it ???

sounds stupid i know but it can make the router play up
