Rumbling sound when setting off

Featured Replies

Hello everyone! Had my Citigo for about 6 weeks now and was just wondering if its normal for it to make a slight rumbling noise when setting off in first gear. Sounds like it's coming from the clutch as it's when you bring the clutch up while setting off. I don't think the clutch actually judders just makes a sound like a rumble and it only happens from time to time. It's done 500 miles so far.

Must watch this thread to see what others say. We've got a crossroads close to home where you have to stop because of restricted vision. It's on a steep slope and setting off again always causes what I think is clutch judder. I just put it down to the car having just a bit more to do than it likes.

We've only had it a few weeks and I still can't get over how smooth and willing it is generally. I don't worry about it.

p.s. I would stress that setting off from rest on the flat or slight uphill doesn't cause this.

Cheers! Yeah it's only when you have to give it revs to set off like up a hill. Under normal circumstances it's fine. It's just every now and again if it's got more to do than it likes!

Sound of 3 cylinder engine is my bet. ;-)

Hopefully thats all it is! It doesn't ever do it parking up or in reverse or anything. Just when you have to give it some gas to move off. It's brand new and under Warranty though so I'll see how it goes!

Mine does this, particularly on hill-starts. Assumed it was just one of the effects of hill-start assist. Wouldn't worry about it!

how many revs are you giving it to pull off?

Not really looked but a normal amount if that makes sense for setting off. Put it this way, not driving any different to other cars I've driven.

Is it your first 3 cylinder engine? Sound is different compared other engines.

Yeah it is my first three cylinder! Had older cars before this! R reg Corsa and T reg Polo!

  • 5 weeks later...

My guess is that you aren't giving enough acceleration moving off. Try giving around 1500 revs before releasing clutch and should fix it

I've just got used to it now - the way she gives a little shudder at being asked to pull away again on that nasty hill... No point in wearing the clutch out is there.
