What does your partner do when driving that drives you mad?

Featured Replies

To cut a long story short, I'm not driving at the moment. (no I'm not banned!)

This has meant that SWMBO has been driving me around, mostly to hospital in Leeds which is a good hour and forty minutes each way. Each journey drives me absolutely nuts! The following is not even an exhaustive list!

  • Constantly in the wrong gear. Usually 4th or 5th where 6th should be used, or in any event usually at least one gear too low.
  • Drives the same distance from the car in front regardless of whether she's doing 30mph, 60mph or even 80, her default speed on dual carriageway or motorway. This means that in traffic she's currently having to slam on instead of just easing up on the throttle.
  • Doesn't read the road ahead so is always on the brakes (see above) even when it's obvious that a reduction in speed is required, like an upcoming speed limit reduction. This lack of forward vision is why she manages to hit every pothole that's out there.
  • Drives too fast everywhere too. Any adherence to speed limits is purely accidental. Despite this she very rarely overtakes on a single carriageway, and in any case follows so closely she can't see the road ahead. Persists in speeding even on routes where she knows (or should do) that speed camera vans operate, like the A64 near Tadcaster.
  • Never acknowledges or thanks other road users.
  • Holds the car on the clutch on hills rather than put the ****ing handbrake on! :swear:

With regard to gear selection, this partly amuses me because when we got the Superb, I pointed out that it suggests when to change gear. "Ha!", she said, "I don't need telling when to change gear!!"

Avoids hill starts like the plague.

She'd rather drive all the way round town than have a change of stopping on a hill.

That reminded me of another one!! OP edited.

Urgh clutch riding does my head in whenever anybody does it.

Its fair to say that most people dont have the same interest about cars or driving than us lot on a car forum though haha. Just a tool to some isnt it.

Im just a tool to some aswel. So maybe thats why i like cars n bikes and feel their pain when driven badly hahaa

Mine it's late braking, winds me up...

I'm lucky, I met my mrs just before she took her test so have managed to get to her before the bad habits set in :D She isnt without her faults though, mainly parking. It doesnt matter how many times she does it, she isnt capable of parking in a bay in a car park. She drives way too close to the side of the road the bay she is going for it on then turns straight into it, resulting in a diagonal parked car. I tell her time and time again, give herself a bigger swing into the bay, the car hasnt got inflate steering lock.

Aside from that it's just confidence, she can drive anywhere, motorways, country roads, towns and cities but doesnt believe in herself enough. I think this is partly because of the Fiesta we had, it's clutch was quite on/off, a common complaint with other owners. Even I would occasionally stall it but she had a nightmare with it so it's taken a year of driving the octavia and now the BMW to get her a bit more happy again.

Well, to give SWMBO her due, she can park really well - especially parallel parking.

Mine:

Drives too slow.

Gets at least 5/10mpg better than I can in any car.

Stops at Giveaways!

And still after 30 years driving cannot do a smooth gear change!

I thought this would no longer be an issue with a DSG... it's just let to another similar issue... now he just manages to completely confuzzle the gearbox to the point where it doesn't know whether to change up or down. So driving along a flat road would normally mean it could stay in 4th at 30mph he some how manages to have it changing up and down to 3rd and 5th (when he speeds!).

Phil

Mine doesn't get gravity on hills, she brakes whatever when she could just let off on the accelerator which would slow us down better.

Oh, and all the above too!!!!

Hahahaha, thats some skill :D

I will never criticise anyones driving though after being in the car with a colleague.

Where do I start!

She lacked an insight into what gear she should be in at any point. Going round bend in 4th/5th gear to have the car nearly stall to then change to 2nd/3rd after the bend.

Hit numerous curbs.

Violent swerve to avoid hitting a big curb separating 2 lanes.

While adjusting the heater controls swerved completely into the opposite lane on a NSL road (luckily nothing coming the other way!)

Wondered why her car would not go up the 25% incline on an NSL road (still in 5th gear).

Sat on the rear bumper of a lorry we followed up said 25% hill at 10mph. Slipping the clutch in 2nd gear the whole way. Then went to overtake still in 2nd and almost stalled. Told her to maybe try first. Then changed into the next gears far too early completely bogging down the engine and loosing all momentum.

Used her mobile phone (told her off for that one as I bloody hate that!)

Failed to make any progress while joining an NSL dual carriageway (in 5th- again!) then had to slam on as she tried to join at 40mph with a lorry bearing down on us.

Approaching a hazard (such as a parked car on our side of road) she would approach in 5th and come to almost a complete stop. Fail to change gear and try to set off in 5th slipping the clutch, crawl past the obstruction and then finally decide to change down to 2nd/3rd (too high a gear still!)

I could go on... really!

I will never get in the car with her again!

Sounds like you married Mrs Goldfinger.    She must be your wife's Sister

Doesn't give it enough pasty, changes down wastes fuel

I don't let her drive when I'm going to be in the car. Simples.

Neither would I, under normal circumstances. Although, as I said, I don't have a lot of choice at the moment.

I have it easy SWMBO refuses to drive when I am in the car :)

I wont go into details but many years ago there where comments whereby anchors were chuck out, keys removed from ignition and thrown at me with comment along lines "if you think you are better etc etc"

simples :) :)

That's part of the problem - I don't dare broach the subject!

Mine is a good driver in my opinion. She does tend to listen to me if I believe she can do something a better way too, but I don't need to give her advice to often anymore.

Cant parrallel park. Changes up too soon. Will not overtake unless its a very slow moving vehicle. Never gives it full go pedal.sits too close to the pedals... i taught her to drive, but so many habits like the abkve have crept in over the 8yrs its depressing. And shes a terrible passenger - feels sick and says i drive too close and too fast despite only doing the limit and 2sec rule in traffic bu being ill means she has to drive :/

All of those plus

  • Indicates after she's moved
  • Makes not effort to avoid potholes
  • Drives at the same speed whatever the road conditions until some mystery point when a 20mph limit kicks in
  • Forgets what gear she is in (dove my car to Aberdeen an back in 3rd once, 35mpg from a small diesel that would do 65 without trying)
  • Treats the car like a dustbin (then does the same to mine)
  • Randomly panic brakes

Many many other things I've blanked out.

My wife is a little rough with the steering wheel, I can't complain about any other parts of her driving as there isn't anything to complain about. :)
