Replacing air con condenser

Featured Replies

Had my car ('06 VRS) in at my local air con specialist today who mentioned that my air con condenser was damaged and a cause of the lack of constant ice cold air since my car was regassed.

Spoken with my local TPS and main dealer with regards to the correct part required and have had a search on here for a DIY on it.

I've noticed a few threads note there was a how to posted up and have come across one during my searches.

Would I be correct in thinking I could also use any guides found on the mk5 golf/seat Leon etc forum as they all use the same VAG platform? Obviously headlights and bumper removal should be difference but splitting the condenser from the pack etc should all be the same?

I've just done mine on a 08 vrs diesel. The strip down isn't hard, just time consuming. The condensor is held onto the other rads by 4 screws. One tip you should use is to mark where all the parts come off exactly. Make sure you order new seals as well, there about £ 2.50 for the two. I got a Nissens unit from a guy on ebay recommend by another member for £85 delivered. And I oredered the plastic protector from my local vw dealer too that goes on the bottom part.

Thanks for the reply.

I've found this YouTube vid which is based on a Golf

Once the bumper/lights etc are off does it appear that the radiator/inter cooler/condenser removal/replacement is the same as you experienced?

I've got a copy of the ETKA parts list for all in that area but no exploded diagram to go with it.

Would anyone have one they can post up so I can see the location of the seals/plastic protector meta55b has mentioned?

meta55b - is item 2 on this diagram the seals you mentioned to replace

Yep that's the seals, I got two sets just in case. The part with the number 3 next to it is actually two separate parts. I took the bottom hose of the rad, it just pulls of once the spring clip is out. Just make sure you push it all the way home, un- like me lol. It makes it a lot better to get the bolts out for the aircon coupling.

meta55b - thanks for the reply. I'll get the seals ordered as well. Do you happen to have the part number for them still?

I'm pretty sure I've still got some G13 coolant so will drain and refill the cooling system whilst I'm at it.

@meta55b, don't suppose you still have a part number or spec for the orings labelled 2 by any chance?

Holy thread resurrection right?!

Cheers mate.

I did mine a few years ago.

you don’t have to remove the radiator (and coolant). I was able to loosen it, remove window washer fluid boxes and slide the condensor out.

before you start make sure you have the proper tools. You need xzn to remove the bumper bar and T45 for the airco hoses which both are not in everyones toolkit

my write-up (use google translate since its in Dutch)

Excellent, thanks. Luckily I have all of those doors from several years of Skoda ownership. I'm also an engineer who loves buying tools!

Did this job last night, took me 6 hours. Rusty bolts are going to be the biggest problem.

I recommend getting a full set of undertray bolts to replace the ones you take off. I'd also prepare for some of the 12 multisplines to be hard to get out, and replace them when you do.

If you're in any doubt about what's failed, change the compressor at the same time.
