Being asked to upgrade to Windows 10

Featured Replies

Amongst other things I build and repair Desktops and Laptops of all ages and makes, running everytype of operating system. Many of these machines come to me without any restoration discs, oem or otherwise with unclonable hd's. Although I carry some of these original MS discs, it's always useful to have easy access to a full range. One site I've found useful for ISO images is:

http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-10-download-iso-32-bit-64-bit-free/   ...Some of you may know it. Many techs now use it. Downloads are FREE! My advise is to spend some time to browse the site and download the ISO you need.

As long as you have the original computer os license key then you just enter that in at installation and all is good. The os will activate and update as normal. The owners of the site are helpful. There are instructions on how to burn a dvd (or copy to usb stick) with the ISO to make it bootable should anyone not be sure. All the images that I've downloaded have been totally reliable and untainted in anyway. They have W10 latest 32 & 64bit ISO's currently in various forms and other images for Windows going right back to almost year zero. This can be quite useful for builders and repairers. I and others have not had any problems whatsoever using images from this site. Just saying...it may help someone. There are other sites where you can get ISO's from but you need to be careful in my opinion as to where you get them from if you are not sure how to check the images for integrity and security. As I understand it, Windows 10 ISO's will be available from MS soon for anyone wanting one and you'll be able to make one from the upgrade files. It's not hard and it's useful if you don't want to download from a third party source.

Windows 10 is in my opinion what '8' should have been. It looks great and seems to be much more productive than '8'. It's intuitively easier to use with nothing getting in the way such as the tiles that many find so annoying. I've not encountered any clitches with it and the install takes very little time, but depends of course on your computer. It's like a more advanced Windows 7 with better security and faster too. I'm going to let Windows Update install mine inplace of Windows 7. I'll do a clean install if anything goes wrong. I back up everyday so I'm not fussed if the installer doesn't do it right. However, I've not found Windows to mess up in that respect for several years and I'm not expecting it now either. I'm not a Windown fan actually, but I confess to being currently quite excited to be getting '10' as I do want to put it to work in earnest to see how she goes over time. Once I've broken it and put it back together I'll let you know what i truly think. Good luck everyone.

I've been running Windows 10 Technical Preview for a couple of months now. It runs quite well even on an old (2008) Dell laptop. I'd still be hesitant to upgrade my main laptop from Win7 to Win10 thou

  • I have run the Windows 10 dev for a while now and I don't think you will be disappointed aslong as you can adapt to change   So glad they got rid of the windows start tile option tho!

  • Just did the reservation thing and opted to skip the email confirmation.......... why would I want more emails if it's not required lol

My Linx 10 tablet has now sprung up the "Windows 10 Register Your Interest Now" - I'm guessing the general consensus is that it would be good on the tablet? I like Windows 8 and IMO it works on a touchscreen, love it on my Windows Phone.

Yeah, it's ok on small touch screen devices. But I just don't like it on desktops or laptops. Just me!

Yeah...I think they get quite busy at times. But the ISO's are bullet proof and always work ok. No security issue that I've found.

Can someone say "yes" it is worth doing please?  I am still waiting to hear great things, and that there are no bugs :D

Just to update, I've now managed to get mine activated on a clean install.

Turns out the trick is to do the update then extract the key once it's happy. You can then use this key to install from an ISO for a super fresh win10 feeling.

Not sure I'd recommend it yet devonutopia, mostly feels like UI changes so far and that fact that it feels more like a mobile os than a desktop one given the number of privacy settings I've just changed... Shall see how it goes over the next few days.

Been away for a week so not had the laptop with me.  Got home last night to find I am not invited to the party yet!  In fact I still have the icon at the bottom and I have reserved it once.

Is it possible to change the keys to Windows?

My laptop came with Win 7 Pro installed and it obviously has a completely different key to the one that I have to my main PC which I used a DVD OEM Win 7 Pro to install.

Since then I switched the old small SSD drive from the PC to the laptop & did a clone of it onto a new 500Gb SSD for the PC, so I now have two Win 7 Pro's running with the same key, so I need to change the one in the laptop to what it says on the base of the laptop to remain kosher!

Wanderer, this may help....

Otherwise do a clean install from an ISO and enter the product key found on the bottom of your laptop or under the battery. Make sure to only install the version of Windows that you originally had on the laptop otherwise your product license key won't work.
