Urgent advice required re CAR BREAK IN

Featured Replies

Hi,

The wife took the car to work today. She heard the alarm go off and went out side to find that the drivers window has been done and the speed camera detector has been stolen off the dash. :thumbdwn:

My predicament is do I

1 Pay 107 for new glass and write the detector

as far as i was aware if you have protected no claims, it will not affect you the next year. Could be wrong, but thats what i thought.

Answer 1 costs you 400 quid + a new detector. Will your insurance really go up that much?

Though next time I'd advise a removable/hidden detector.

It's really whether or not you think you can afford it. Sorry I can't offer much help. Except maybe invest in a baseball bat and wait by the car next time? :finger:

You should be able to get the glass done without affecting your excess or no-claims. The detector will be slightly trickier - you may be able to claim under the audio section but there's usually a limit of something like

Protected no claims means diddly squat. All it means is that if you have say 40% discount you will still have 40% discount. It does not mean that your actual full 100% premium will not go up. By this I mean that if this year you paid

thanks for that :)

Yes the protect is for the discount.

so if my insurance is 100 and i get 60% off i pay 40.

If they decide to raise that to 1000 and still guarantee the 60% bonus i pay

I thought you could pay the glass/windscreen excess and they would replace the window for you? That's what we did when our Corsa got broken into. My excess is

I was talking with a colleague about this. He had his stereo stolen from his range rover. He only paid the glass excess and the insurer even arranged to have the new stereo fitted by a pro.

Companies also ask whether you've made a claim in last x years INCLUDING ones that did not result in the loss of no claims - I'd foot the cost unfortunately :thumbdwn:

I'd foot the cost too. You have to look long term. Sorry. *******s

Have had may windscreens replaced or repaired. On all my policies so far I have only had to pay a Glass excess of

Glass SHOULD not affect the NCB, but if you claim for the speed detector , it will affect unless you have protected or guaranteed NCB.

We heard after my sons jetta got broken into, that thieves are now stealing Detctors or portable sat navs in pieces, ie, just the unit from 1 car, the cradle from another , cigarette connector from another.

The worst part is no matter how much you hoover / clean up the glass, you will be finding bits for months after.

My insurance state that if a speed detector or stereo is removable and you havent removed it than any theft as a result will not be covered.

However another matter is to never leave detectors, GPS on dash. Don't even leave just the mounts as the scrotes are bing known to grab just them to go with sets stolen from other cars! Esp. with Christmas coming they start needing money and have forgotton the way to get it is a J-O-B....

Go buy a new, exactly the same detector on your credit card, report your window damage and theft to the police and get a crime number, back to the credit card company who cover theft on items purchased for so many days, tell them it was stolen on the way home, so no serial number registered.

Wait for the money from the card company and use that to pay your excess for the glass you had replaced at

I think that should have been an " under the counter" suggestion ;)

Altho Sal has a point.

IF YOU R CLAIMING FOR THE GLASS DON'T MENTION IT WAS THE RESULT OF A BREAK-IN OR ATTEMPTED THEFT, guarentee this will result in loss of no claims, higher premiums even if it is only for glass.

Exactly. Call your insurance company and tell them your window is broken plain and simple, dont go into detail, just ask them what fitting centres they use in your area. Take the car to the fitting centre, get the window replaced, pay the glass excess and bobs your uncle.

As for the camera detector, put it down to a learning experience, NEVER leave any visual object in your car that can be easily removed, especially not one as expensive as a camera detector.

Its getting that bad, I wont even leave an empty plastic bag on my seats, cos some wee scum bag with half a brain will get it into his head that its worth taking the risk for.

Had a similar incident incident myself. Was told by my insurersthat glass would have no effect on premium or ncb. Howvever a loss claim..... So anyone got a cheap trafficmaster they dont want????

Ive now taken to leaving signs front and back saying that no cash valuables or electronic devices left in vehicle.....

Just had a god lok today and even though the car has been hoovered twice there are still shards of glass everywhere.

And one of the 3 week old leather seats has been scratched.

Propper hacked off now.

The bright side is i will probably be goin on the LAser thingy gb and have found a sat nav/cam detector here.
