Selling Up

Featured Replies

Guys,

Looking at selling up and moving on from VAG. Currently got a '62 Octavia vRS Blackline DSG.

I've never sold a car privately before but I'm after a contract lease next time around so I need to sell privately as I'm not a position to part ex, which I would much prefer to do out of sheer ease.

What do I do given that I've still got a fair amount of finance left? Do I sit down with any potential buyer and phone VW finance and clear it over the phone whilst buyer is still there - I literally have no idea about the logistics over it. Seems really complicated :(

Lastly, the million dollar question. What should I be asking for it? It's done just shy of 22k on the clock. I've seen trade ones on autotrader for £14500-£15000 and a private one listed for £13990 but I want to remain competitive yet without taking the ****.

Like I said, never done this before.

tell the potential buyer the outstanding amount (and show them proof of the figure) and if he wants to buy the car ask him or her to settle the outstanding amount on the vehicle and make up whatever the difference is in cash or however you want paying. It's pretty simple. I've done this a couple of times before when buying cars with finance outstanding from private sellers. Price wise that's up to you but if you are greedy the phone won't ring. I just bought a mint VRS Blackline Octavia 70K miler 62 plate from a skoda dealer for £10K - I think I got a great deal and what a great car. Good luck.

I have sold a lot of cars privately, but never one as new as yours.

There is no reason why you couldn't clear the finance while sitting down with the buyer. But personally I would clear the finance using a credit card before putting it up for sale......otherwise the finance will show up on an HPI check and could potentially put buyers off.

As for the price, look at cars local to you on autotrader and price accordingly. If dealers are selling similar examples to yours for £14500 - £15000 then £13990 for a private sale seems very optimistic to me.

Depends what the dealers are offering with their sale price. If with a new mot and decent warranty, and good aftersales service, then maybe a little optimistic.

But, if your buyer can save £1000, and your car has a full mot, advise them that they could purchase their own warranty for a few hundred pounds, and still have several hundred quid saved. :) .

And if you go the Auto T route, maybe ignore their price suggestion. They suggested 3200 for mine, yet wbac and mfym offered 3350 and 3480 respectively. They would make money on that too at auction.

A trader who has seen the motor offered 3600.

I have taken out a few of these used car warranty's that you can buy, and most won't allow a claim in the first 21 days (or similar) of the warranty. There are also other small print terms that can mean no payout, whereas a dealer warranty is water tight.

If you buy privately and the engine blows up on the drive home (before you manage to arrange a warranty) you have no recourse whatsoever from the seller. I think this scares people....to the point where they want to be saving a bit more than £1000 on a £14.5k car.

I notice someone privately selling a 62 plate vRS with 18400 miles for £12660. I think this is closer to the mark, but even then he will probably be lucky to get £12000 for it after the bartering is done......this may sound harsh, but what would a dealer offer for trade in?......much less no doubt.

If it's a 62 plate then it should have a few months at least dealer warranty left on it

What happens to time. 62 plate still feels brand spanking new...

what colour is the car ?

hatch or estate ?

Of course. I forgot about that. Presumably it's fully transferable if the car changes hands privately?

Time flies, bud. The older you get, the faster it flies, Lol...........................................Scream if you wanna go faster!

Should transfer. The manufacturer warranty belongs to the car rather than the person that purchased it, I believe.

I have claimed on a Saab before which was purchased second hand, at one year old.

This bit of warranty is a big selling plus, especially if it has a few months left.

Not all dealers offer a new mot nowadays, booke, and the warranty could be a very basic one, (remaining manufacturer warranty aside).

They would have a lot more 'come back' rights though, with a quality trader / garage.
