  • If you REALLY needed the ESP it would be standard instead of an option. Just don't floor it round corners in the wet, and save yourself

  • Did you see the episode of Fifth Gear where they tested ESP using a Jag on ice with Tiff driving - it was the series before the current one I think. It was an impressive demo and proved without a dou

  • Can you turn your headlights off? Can you drive without your seatbelt on? There's certain situations where you don't want safety devices to be active as they are not required or even a hinderance. e

it knows when the steering is at a certain angle and a certain pressure is being applied to the brakes then it should react in a certain way. if it does not react this way then it does what it has to do to make it perfrom how it expects.

different suspension/brakes/power have had no bearing in how my esp works :)

Wicked!

Just enquired about getting ESP on a brand new Furby vRS, 3 months wait if i want it added on!!!!!!!!

P.S.. for those that are wondering, i havent actually purchased my Furb yet, but im working on it ;)

3 months is the standard wait for most factory options, mine came 8 weeks after i ordered. Picking it up a week on friday.

ABS prevents lockups.

The premise of EBD is the whole '2 wheels on ice' date=' 2 on tarmac', still brake in a straight line.[/quote']

Any properly specified (by the manufacturer) ABS system will do that; in fact it will leave you with the better braking effort on the side on tarmac. I did this experimentally with my last car and know from experience that this happens.

Unless EBD is one of these "Second guess that you're doing an emergency stop and apply the brakes harder than you already have" systems, it's just a marketting gimmick, and might get you rear-ended when you reacted fast and hard but didn't command maximum braking as being unnecessary. But there will be no statistics to show that "because that's always the fault of the following car".

we have a new octi 4x4 with esp and I took it into clumber park when we had the snow last Christmas. I had a blast around the open fields on the ice with it both on and off. With it off even our mildred could drive it without spinning it and I found it was doing things for me that I didn't want it to do like when I wanted to slide the back end out and apply a bit of opposite lock.

Really!? is it just a maximum of 3months then? and could come earlier...

what are you having on yours?

The official time for factory orders is 10-12 weeks, it might come earlier, if it does its just luck. ;)

Mines, Black Magic, Xenon's, Cruise and heated seats.

The trouble with ESP is that it's very flattering. It gives you the impression that you negotiated that roundabout at 40mph all by yourself. then you get into a car without it and find yourself having a close relationship with a hedge.

Doesn't that depend how many channels the ABS is? Ultimately, having 4 channel is the best, ie each wheel is individually monitored, but I don't know how common this is on non-performance cars :D

Chris

Yes, Yes, Yes.

Its easy to trigger on a roundabout as well if you want to test it, just give it some until the car breaks traction and starts sliding (and I dont mean Traction control). It cuts in quiet smoothly too.

The light on the dashboard flashes when its working.

RBW

YES

either my car grips very well or i take corners smoothly as my esp doesn't cut in very often unless i give it full whack from a standing start or on a tight bend in the damp :)

Does ESP have to be declared on your insurance as a modification? i looked on insurance websites and they dont seem to have it as an option.

I would think you would want to mention it as the insureres just started pushing for every car to have it as standard. Therfore it would possibly drop the insurance price.

I don't think ESP would drop the insurance price because in the event of a claim where the car is written off, you would be expecting the insurance company to stump up

Hence why I said "properly specified". You'd probably get away with 3-channel, since something like 75% of braking effort goes through the front wheels, on anything bar rear-mid or rear engined cars.

I'm guessing the ESP in the FABIA VRS is ESP 1?

also I think ESP should reduce insurance but practically it will never happen as insurers are con artists.

Do you think telling your insurance company about optional extra's will increase yur premium?

I tried telling many about ESP but they didn't want to know

There are two sides to this argument. a) ESP is a safety device therefore you will not crash. B) ESP is a safety device that will cause you to drive outside your own abilities and at some point the laws of physics will win....

So I reckon, on balance, it shouldn't affect the premium

Pretty much my view too. As long as you try to not use it, like ABS, road-going 4wd (quattro, Sierra 4x4 Subaru and the like, not Chelsea tractors) and traction control, it's a safety device for that unexpectedly greasy patch / oil spill / misjudged bend, but some people will treat activating it as a matter of routine/machismo, and will therefore have bigger crashes, because they'll be going faster when they have them.

Well to me it was an essential for a new car on following grounds

1) Euroncap recommend it and lets face it they crash cars for a living and it is the only reccommendation on their website.

2) My brother said he would pay for me to have it added on my car if I didn't do it myself. If he would do that it must be good!

Lorna

OTOH Lorna, EuroNCAP have a close relationship with the FIA, who are fronted by a man who believes that only aerodynamic effects can slow a vehicle at more than 1g, and who is therefore clearly ignorant of such things as hysteresis.

Also, because they change their test standeards, they rated my last car as 1*, where Folksam, using real world crash results, gave it 4*. So which do you trust, a single laboratory experiment, o the real world. I know which I trust, cos I know which I drive my car in!

But you could say the same about ABS, Traction control, Airbags ect.

I never think to myself "i'm goign to drive like a tw4t today cos I have ESP"

they are just con artists end of story
