Should I specify ESP on my car?

Featured Replies

But you could say the same about ABS, Traction control, Airbags ect.

Yep I'd definitely agree with that. I know a lot of people who think ABS will stop them quicker and will save them from a crash, so they drive faster, leave smaller stopping distances, etc, etc!

  • If you REALLY needed the ESP it would be standard instead of an option. Just don't floor it round corners in the wet, and save yourself

  • Did you see the episode of Fifth Gear where they tested ESP using a Jag on ice with Tiff driving - it was the series before the current one I think. It was an impressive demo and proved without a dou

  • Can you turn your headlights off? Can you drive without your seatbelt on? There's certain situations where you don't want safety devices to be active as they are not required or even a hinderance. e

And that's very frequently actually wrong! (not just in snow or on deep gravel, but on tarmac, cos the ABS triggers before the wheel actually gets to the point of locking). The best stops with ABS (according the DTM guys) are achieved when you can learn to brake to the point where it just doesn't trigger, or triggers maybe one or 2 cycles in a 60mph delta V.

Chris

i'm not sure why you said this?

Yes I probably would be suprised. I don't get why anyone would think "ill drive faster cos I have ESP"

Has anyone reading this thread ever thought that they will drive faster as they have safety devices on thier cars?

I reckon you have cos who in thier right mind would tell you this? it must be from personal epxerience?

OTOH Lorna' date=' EuroNCAP have a close relationship with the FIA, who are fronted by a man who believes that only aerodynamic effects can slow a vehicle at more than 1g, and who is therefore clearly ignorant of such things as hysteresis.

Also, because they change their test standeards, they rated my last car as 1*, where Folksam, using real world crash results, gave it 4*. So which do you trust, a single laboratory experiment, o the real world. I know which I trust, cos I know which I drive my car in![/quote']

To quote Mandy Rice-Davis you would say that wouldn't you as your car only got a 1* whereas I would say I trust Euroncap as mine got a 5*!

what a scary though! as sometimes ABS can actually mean a longer stopping distance, as it's also supposed to allow the driving to steer at the same time i believe?

ABS can cut in on bumpy surfaces also which annoying, especially when u know u can stop in time with normal brakes without stoopid ABS kicking in...not that i don't appreciate it like :P

Back to the topic.....YES:thumbup: buy ESP

Lorna, see if you can find a Folksam rating for yours, and then see if you're so confident.

Ken is there a central website with results for this on it? The ones I found all seem to deal with the theory behind it rather than results of :D

Re ABS:

Where I used to live there is a small hump back bridge and a tee junction just after it, if you approached it a little too vigorously the ABS would try to kick in when the front of the car goes light and as a consequence you would overshoot the stop line of the junction despite the brake pedal being buried in the carpet and the road being bone dry.

Very scary at the time and goes to show that these safety devices aren't always as brilliant as people think.

Oh, and ESP is very good as well, I "tested" it on a large bit of private road and it works pretty well.

Just slow down then!

ABS is very good at what it does ... allows you to steer the car under heavy braking. ;)

Chris

It's saved my a$$ many times in the past but it could have been a different story on that one occasion where a non ABS car would have stopped a lot quicker.

It isn't totally foolproof as I discovered. :D

Just slow down then!

Sorry dad, I wont do it again. :D

It's what is known as a lesson learnt.

You missed my point! What I am saying is that we ALL filter information to fit into our world view and that I am as guilty as much as you are! You believe Folksam because it says your car is safe I believe Euroncap because it says mine is!
