TPLI sensitivity

Featured Replies

Recently had the TPLI go off a few times for no noticeable reason either by looking at the tyre or once at a garage checking the pressures. Had to stop on the m4 hard-shoulder the other day as it indicated two flats but no such thing - i think this may have been caused by running over the cats eyes / stud things in the narrow lanes at the roadworks (i've noticed this before also). But previous to that the other time when was coming down from the Highlands, from Glencoe towards Stirling on the A82/A85 route, going up and down in height a fair amount but also temperature - a few weeks back it was around 5deg on the high bits then maybe 10deg warmer lower - and this seemed to trigger all four.

It does work ok (and I'm glad it does) its picked up early on the several (3 arrghh!) slow punctures (from screws - nature of visiting building sites for work) i've sustained over the last 6 months. I haven't seen any setting for adjusting it, guess its a legal requirement now so no fiddling!

Just wondering if i've got my 'inflation' method right - i'm generally on my own in the car (the estate vRS on standard 18" gemini's). I would normally check the pressures when the tyres are cold and put 2.4bar/35psi in them all round, then reset the TPLI.

As a side note, i did try and reset it quickly before stopping on the hard-shoulder (to see if there was slow puncture) as car felt ok, but it wouldn't let me - i suppose it knows you've not stopped and got out to check.

Its the first car i've had with TPLI so guess never knew about pressures going up and down with speed/temperature.

Does this sound over sensitive or would simply having nitrogen filled tyres help/stop the false alarms?

If it won't save the pressures there is an issue - my old O3 used to do this on a weekly basis until they replaced half of the electronics under warranty

Does TPMS remembers overall rotation of all 4 tyres and then alarms if any deviates from the average, or does it remember each one individually?

I don't think there is a problem with it working, just a bit sensitive (but better to be that way than not) - it does reset but it didn't want to until i'd physically stopped and go out of the car, then got back in.

I've done 16k miles and i think i can identify a reason its gone off -  3 times for actual punctures, 2 times think for running on studs/cat eyes due to narrow lane roadworks (and me being crap), and 1 time i think due to the quick change in temperature/height dropping down from the hills.

Probably try nitrogen filling the tyres to see if this helps with the sensitivity / pressure variance.

I've tried nitrogen and TBH it is another V-power IMHO - snake oil! - unless they vacuum the tyres out completely first there is a fair bit of air in there before they pressurise the tyres.

The only time I ever got the error about being unable to save tyre pressures it had flagged up all 4 tyres as having lost pressure - it was either a software update or a replacement CAN Gateway or BCM that cured it - they were all done at the same time as that car had a few 'issues' to say the least ...........

Mine went off some way into a long drive to Devon from the south east coast earlier this week. No problems and probably as Id had two new front tyres and forgotten to reset the system (had meant to). Said the rear right was deflating though.

First false alarm ive had in 16 months though and definitely because of user error described.
