Test driving a Seat Leon Cupra 280 DSG 5-door tomorrow....

Featured Replies

Think I'm going to chuck my Focus mountuned RS mk2 in for it. Have thrashed a deal out today with a dealer, just need to nail down final bits and bobs after us driving the car and him seeing my RS.

Really fancy something quick with ALL the toys....like adaptive cruise, satnav, rear-doors for the kids, DSG, parking sensors, auto-everything.....etc etc it's FULLY loaded. A real Q-car.

Am I daft? There really isn't a bad review on the Leon anywhere......and my Focus will be seven years old next year.....

PS.....Occy Blackline is going NOWHERE. Lol. Still love it and due its third and final free service in a few weeks.

Not daft, they are fast, 5 door and have the toys.

But not selling well and a depreciation disaster or can be looked at as a chance to get a good hardly used car cheaply.

So be sure to go for a good deal, and maybe give getting a new one a miss.

Then just shortly there will be VW Golf R Estate Demonstrators for sale,  as well as Leon Cupra ST 280 DSG's

It's can't be faster than your montane rs and doesn't have that 5 pot sound

Didn't you already get rid of the Focus and then buy it back again? The RS stands out, its loud, proud of what it is. I'm sure the Leon is a very competent car...but I'd struggle to part with an RS that looks that good..

Yep......I sold my RS in April last year for a Subaru Sti......missed it that much I bought it back in October managing to broker a deal putting some cash back into my pocket. Here I am 9 months later.........not really enjoying the basic nature of the RS anymore. They are getting stolen left right and centre.......and it's getting OLD. Getting harder and harder to keep on top of it detailing-wise as well because it's used most days in a rural area.

We go everywhere in the Occy cause it's so family friendly. In my mind the Leon is just as family friendly......but with toys and comfort as well as being quick but not too thirsty. I'm 40 this year. Just had an operation on my back. Due another. Just fancy a complete change of scene now after 5 stints of RS ownership. Feel like I've finally scratched the RS mk2 itch......will perhaps look at a mk3 in the future depending on how they are..........but the Leon is a cracking machine by all accounts.

Not buying a new Cupra....looking at 1 year old examples.

Looking forward to seeing what you think about it.

I test drove a RS and ended up with a DSG S3. After driving both there was something about the S3 that the Focus didn't have. I think it was the fact the Focus is full on all of the time, whereas the S3 isn't. I looked at the Leon too but the AWD tipped it. I wouldn't rule out a Golf R either. They're both a bit more expensive than a Leon but both pretty good.

Just got back home. Utter knightmare journey down. Satnav which I blindly followed took us into the centre of Nottingham literally to a back alley near the big arena. Cost us an extra hour and a half in time by the time we got to the dealership in Grantham. Hope to god I didn't get caught on one of the thousand speed cameras in and around Nottingham even though I'm sure I was doing what I should have been.

Anyway. We get there. It was the Leon 280 that's at the Kia dealership in case anyone fancies having a nosey.

We didn't do the deal. I'll not lie......the car drove and sounded awful to us. The DSG didn't really seem to know what to do, either hanging onto gears too long or not changing down in time. And the sound. Good god. It's like a sewing machine. Just couldn't get away with it at all. Performance compared to our RS was much weaker, no real thump or drama.

Don't think the guys in the dealership could believe we travelled over 120 miles and didn't do the deal.

My wife's fuming with me cause it's cost us a day off and about £50 in fuel for nothing. Suppose it's not for nothing if it serves a purpose in deciding to keep the RS longer.

Tell you what......if the 4 cylinder mk3 RS sounds like the Cupra.........I'll not get one.

Sorry guys. Don't mean to sound like a Ford zealot. I'm not. We change our cars all the time and have owned many fast cars......I really wanted to like the Leon.

Is the focus the 2.5 5 cylinder turbo?

Great sound from that if it is - bit like Bossfox's Yeti.

Have you not looked into a manual? I know you said your back was a bit iffy due to an op and future ones. Maybe look at a new one to make sure this one wasn't crap! :)

Can't say I'm too surprised you felt that way. The 2.5T in the RS is awesome and sounds fantastic. The 4-cyl motor in the Leon is indeed weak and characterless in comparison.

I'd keep the RS any day. They don't really depreciate much either do they?

I was also disappointed in the Leon when I drove it. Didn't feel much quicker than our fabia vRS to be honest despite the apparent 100bhp advantage lol.

Better "wasting" the day than buying a car you regret. Do you not fancy a golf r?

A Mk7 Golf R sounds the same as a Leon Cupra 280 more or less other than a little different sound generation done on them,

as does a S3 Spaceback / Saloon.

VW 2.0 TSI / TFSI, they are what they are,  265, 280, 300 ps 4 cylinder engines.

TTRS with dsg to keep that 5 pot sound?

DSG farting makes me chuckle lol :D

The exhaust farts on upshift are okay but otherwise I'm not overly into that. Does sound abit better than stock but the induction noise is still very uninspiring (to me, imho).

Hate the noise on upshift

Think the next car I buy, will be on the BASIS of engine soundtrack, sourced from the Journos advice. NO other characteristic will matter. Simple!!

Surprised you found it that weak a performance! Mind you, I've got around 100lb/ft more than standard so I guess I've forgotten what its like. I agree, you won't buy one for it's sound qualities either. I do recall though thinking how brilliantly linear the power delivery was, despite the remap, I'm not a huge fan of massive slugs of diesel like torque that upset the balance when pushing on. The DSG box btw is pointless in auto mode unless you're pottering around town or in a traffic jam. The paddle shift is really the only option for a car like this, personally I think that Sport mode fully auto is pointless, and I've never used it.

EVO mag has a great write up of their long termer (sorry can't find a link on the public website). Ian Eveleigh thought "It's not only the best SEAT I've ever driven, it also ranks amongst the very best VW group hot hatches I've ever driven"

Given the engine is common elsewhere in the VAG brands, it would be a waste of time looking at S3 or Golf R. Performance is largely similar, and the sound track equally anodyne. It is a Q car though, and you'll slice along a busy A road quicker than you might in the Focus, as no one will bother trying to block you, nor try to race you.

Anyways, all a bit late now!

????? Stever750 but then I'm as biased as you, some would say!

Sorry keith, don't understand what your ????? refers to?

stever750,  i think you covered them perfectly, non offensive,

not shouty and look at me and how sporty i am 'rally derived'  just like always said by the narrator on Police Interceptors.

Tuning potential as well.

Depreciation Disasters which is good if buying a used one as a keeper,

tough if you bought a new one, or a used one and want to resell,

but you are well sorted when you are just valuing the smiles per miles and a great Value for money hot hatch / Daily Driver / family transport.

So Seat is no different from the other VW, Audi and Skoda models on sale now.

Really?

Some people don't like the vag set up with very flat torque graph and linear power as it can feel slow even tho it's very fast. Some cars with spike in torque can feel much quicker
