Aircon

Featured Replies

hi could anybody help got Skoda octavia tdi had new aircon condenser fitted it last year and regased and it been ice cold till today put it on and blowing warm , I checked fans at front not going round when I turn it on , checked fuses they ok any ideas ?

Get it checked on an A/C machine to see if it has any gas in the system. It should have around 550g but anything over 200g should be enough for the A/C to work.

A quick check you could do yourself with just a torch is check the bolt that goes through the centre of the A/C Compessor (at the bottom nearest to the front of the car on the Alternator belt).

The bolts commonly come loose.. this stops the compressor working. When the bolt comes loose there is normally residue/ dust almost like brake dust on the Compressor pulley.

If the bolt is loose/ has come out slightly or completely then you can still fix it without having to replace the compressor  You just tighten the bolt back up.

My bolt had come out completely and I replaced the bolt and added locktight + it now works 100%. You can see the "red dust" on the pulley.. I took the photo from under the car with the lower arch liner removed but you can see from the top

Have you checked the bolt??

I am looking into mine at the moment as not worked since I had the car. Thanks for the photo Matt.

People have mentioned stone damage (to the compressor, I think), through the grill, but all I can see through the grill is the engine radiator. Nothing else at all.

2005 1.9 105pd - It has an under tray fitted. (Easy to move, I know)

I will look at this bolt, do some checks on the climate readout, and keep my eye on this thread.

Matt, I take it your photo is showing the bolt missing? I think mine is like this (not got underneath yet though).

I assume it has to be a specific bolt (obviously thread size) but length also??? Part number??? would be appreciated.

Do you know how the bolt missing prevents the system working.

I am sure others have said tightening is not possible though. Glad you sorted yours.

Cheers.

When I get my car back from the sprayshop, this is the first thing I will be checking...

Hopefully it will save me shelling out for a new compressor!

Mine looks like it has a thread (as in the threaded end of a bolt) sticking out not a bolt head, am I missing something?

I have tightened over 20 customers without any coming back.. the only thing that can go wrong is the nut snapping as you tighten it.

I worked at VW previously and we used to replace the Compressors when the bolt started to come out as this stops the compressor working.

It wasnt untill I worked for Carcraft (Carshaft.. now shut down lol) that i tried to tighten one. I have seen a few people snap the bolts and on one occasion I snapped the bolt.. that wasnt the end though.. Using abit of metal magic I put the bolt end back on and that one worked aswell ;)!

The bolt i used was a spare T30 I had.. it was from a Renault Traffic fuel filter (the new filters come with new bolts). Anyway it is a very common thread lots of other bolts will fit t30 and 10mm bolts etc. To be honest mine was the 1st one I've seen that had come all the way out.. they normally just wind out slightly

The high pressure switch behind the condenser/radiator is a common fault , if its faulty then system wont work . Cheap an easy fix.

How long does the bolt have to be though Matt? If not critical, then a rough guide?

Cheers bud

The radiator at that you can see through the grill is the condenser for the aircon which can get damaged and lose all the gas. Behind it is the intercooler with the coolant rad at the back.

Ill take a pic tomorrow.. about 30mm at a guess?

You learn something new everyday, I did not know that. Thought the aircon one was a lot smaller. Cheers mate.

And thanks Matt for the photo. Looks about 20mm? Got to be worth a try now, as I am sure mine is missing, unless that means it is already buggered.

Cheers. Good luck with yours, Damo.

Same to you mate

I don't have my car to check this yet, as its still in the paintshop...

Let us know how you go on

Should I be concerned, I have the Orange dust but I seem to have a thread rather than a bolt. The aircon is not the coldest in the world but it does work

Yours is the other type of Compressor m8.. they arent common for breaking tbh. I havnt seen the nut come loose on these although you do have abit of dust.

Cheers bud, been stressing about it all day lol. What is the dust out of interest?

Its just crap from the A/C clutch.. just like clutch dust when you remove a gearbox. The bolt holds the clutch mech together so I would expect more dust if the bolt had come loose. You also get dust off the alternator belt + pulleys + cambelt so if theres dust everywhere not just the A/C compressor I wouldnt be too concerned m8

Cheers Matt, one less thing to worry about.

The MkII doesn't have a clutch on the aircon though?

The MkII doesn't have a clutch on the aircon though?

So the A/C is constantly on then?

So the A/C is constantly on then?

Yes, a valve controls how much refrigerant actually circulates through the compressor. I think even when the aircon is off something 2% passes through the compressor.

Ok dude.. iv not stripped a compressor so wouldn't know.. I assumed they still had a clutch and the bolt held it all together.. must just be dust from the pulley itself then  either way whenever I've replaced a pump or fixed one by gunning the bolt back in they have always had alot of dust and when they are working they tend to only have abit of dust
