Small dent and deep chip: What to do?

Featured Replies

I have no idea how this happened - I have not heard any loud bangs whilst driving - but I have a small dent and chip in the bonnet of my Yeti just above the OS light.

The chip is about 3-4 mm long by 1-2 mm wide and has damaged the metal (i.e. it has gone through the lacquer and paint and gone into the actual bodywork).

I have a Chipex kit and can sort the paintwork aspect (I was about to do the other small chips on the bonnet, polish it and seal it with a hard ceramic sealant), but what to do about the dent?

The dent is pretty rounded and about 10-12 mm across in total.

It must have been quite force as it has dented inside the bonnet as well. And there is a small gap between the two layers of metal (inner and outer layers of the bonnet) although this is barely visible on the photo and you'd only see it if you knew it was there.

Any suggestions as to what should I do about it?

Can it be pushed out from within the bonnet layers?

How good are they at removing dents completely?

I'm not too worried about the chip as I am pretty sure I could get rid of that well enough, but if there is any dent left behind, it will obviously show.

Any thoughts on what can be done?

A decent PDR (paintless dent removal) company will be able to get that out no problem.

Thanks - I'll have a look at what is available locally.

Isn't PDR for areas where eh paint has not been broken? Or am I getting that wrong?

I've used our local 'Chips Away' guy before and he did a good job on a straightforward paint repair.

The term is used so that a dent can be removed without having to paint the panel yes, but there is nothing to stop you from removing the dent and then using a touch up kit to repair the broken paint.

Just be careful of a smart repair that basically floods the panel with coloured thinners as the results will look good... but not for long!

Received with thanks.

I'm off work most of next week do will get in touch.

I got a car Friday night & knocked the seller down £250 because of a golf ball sized dent in the door. Yesterday Dent Wizard removed the dent for less than £100 & I can't even see where it was now. I hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for that.

Will be looking into PDR tomorrow.

Thanks for the PM re: the damage.

Yes, you are correct, I run a SMART repair outfit in Leom not far from you.

The cheapest way would be to get a PDR tech to remove the dent depth and then touch it in as best can be done, but the location may offer some access issues for rods to get behind the damage to push it out-and as the paint is broken, a glue pull repair will not work as it will remove more paint.

With the car being a silver colour and with the damage being in the location it is in, the risk of colour blending issues being noticable is high, so the only proper repair is a full bonnet respray which we could carry out for you back to factory standards.

Thanks for the advice and PM.

There are a couple of holes in the bonnet within a few inches of the dent and, judging by the damage externally and internally, there may be a small gap between the inner and outer skins of the bonnet.

It is Steel Grey (if that makes any difference, but it is basically a dark silver metallic).

I'll probably be in touch this week.

There's prob a way in for the right guy with extensive PDR kit, but the paint is down to metal so no point IMO, looks best to spray  :sun:

Hi mate, did you get the repair sorted, if so how? I will be interested to see, as i have a dent in my drivers door from someone in a carpark that i need to get sorted.

Thanks.

Not yet.

My Yeti is going back to the Skoda approved body shop to get the rear doors resprayed (again). They are going to look at it and 'do me a deal'.

If that's no good, I'll be going to a local Briskodian and getting them to look at it.

Good luck with that then mate, i've had the lower part of my boot resprayed by the VAG bodyshop in Coventry & very happy with the results, so may possibly take it back there again to sort the door out.
