Is it worth Skoda service oil change or no?

Hi guys. My 2004 Fabia needs a oil change is it worth me going to skoda for a change and paying there price or is not worth the hassle for a oil change? Or is it easier to do it my self?

Go on E-Bay get the oil with VW 505.01 spec and oil filter, I get all 4 filters from the same place..

 - 6 mann filter oil filers (From GSF/ECP)

Do it every 10k miles and be happy :)

 

At that age, it matters that it's been done, not that it's been done by a dealer.

Only you can answer that.

Are you practically inclined and capable of doing such?

Some people just arent capable, but if you are then go for it (:

Keep your hands clean, I am guessing by asking this question it is not a job you are familiar with. Find a decent backstreet garage (not a chain) and get them to do it. Handy to build up a good reputation with such a place for future work.

I'm with CM - dead easy to DIY, even for a novice.  And with a Pela, you're not even going to undo the sump plug :no:

I have this opinion:

get your first 4 services done by the dealer. That way if you have any issues on the 4th year of ownership you're pretty much guaranteed to get most if not all of the repairs completely covered by good will. you might save a few (and I mean a few) quid not using the dealer but it'll cost you a damn site more if the engine or box goes wrong once the warranty has ended.

also pella pumps don't remove all the oil from the engine so you end up with a litre of filthy oil sloshing about in your brand new oil.

drain plug always comes out when in service a car.

Get that sump plug undone, drain the lot, do it properly.

 

BTW it's easy to DIY that is of course assuming you have the correct tools for the job. If not let someone else do it, a dealer will be the most expensive, try your local garage.

For those that prefer to use the sump plug for draining the oil then this is £25 well spent...

On a TDI, I've used a pella and taken the sump plug out and nothing came out after.

 

In fact if you wanted to be picky, if you have a pella, you can take the approx 0.5L out that lives below the oil filter in the filter housing and oil cooler below it.

That doesn't come out if you use the sump plug!

 

So even if the pella didn't get it all out of the sump, but you did clean the filter housing out with it, you'd still be better off as it certainly doesn't leave 0.5L kicking around the sump.

That plus they use it on boats all the time, and marine engines get a hard time. You don't see them going pop all the time.

 

I'd rather do it with a pella more often, than go and pay somebody on a backstreet to thread the sump plug and require a new sump (Steel plug, aluminium sump).

 

Anyway, it's your call, but saying a pump leaves loads of dirty oil kicking around is just plain wrong, unless you're using it wrong.

I didn't know people felt so strongly about this.

We were once provided with said tool, well a sealey suction pump but tomato, tomato.

We were not entirely happy about using it as we were sceptical about how much oil it would remove, so we measured it.

On the vehicles that the tube would actually fit in it would leave a noticeable amount of used oil in the sump, around 800ml.

This was due to the engine having a plastic baffle in the sump pan and a recess within the sump at the lowest point, not a huge recess but a recess none the less and this would be where the oil would manifest itself due to gravitational effect.

There was no cut out in the baffle so the pump could suck no further.

This was on BKD, BMN, BLT, AUQ, BAM and other engines of the same era.

After this I have always removed the plug and I have a small fluid sucker that I use to empty the oil filter housing.

on new gen diesel engines the oil filter is underneath and incorporates a drain plug to rid you of any excess.

'1 litre of filthy oil sloshing about'.  

So not a regularly serviced engine before the Vacuuming out of the oil.

 

Not the way to do it then on a first Oil change if you do not know the car.

Best go back to doing flushes, or draining filling with cheap oil, running, draining, disposing and then new plug and Oil & Filter.

Or ask around for a decent independent, ideally VAG, garage.

 

Take your own oil and filter if you want, if they're decent they won't mind.

Most of the garages round here want at least £100 for an oil/filter change, as against not much more from Skoda. If you don't fancy /cant do it yourself, then perhaps one of the BETTER fast fit places ( you can trust to sue 505.01) ,or will let you check the quality of the oil . And no, you can't trust a K... ...t fitter. You need a place where they know that the filter doesn't come with all the seals needed

I thought K F were fined recently for poor standards of work but I can't find the story.

That's for all the info guys I think il just do the oil change my self. Is it anything else anyone recommended do I have a pipercross panel so wouldnt need thats.

Not left over, it sucks all of your old oil out of the sump via a tube that goes down your dipstick tube.  And you can also suck the oil out of the oil filter housing - as CM said in post no.10.

Is that the oil filter I need mate. I thought it was a oil filter like the metal thing that's screws in

If you've got the Fabia VRS MK1, then that's the paper filter you want, plus a 32mm six-sided socket to remove plastic cap from top of filter..but have known other cap sizes exist..

Original sump plug size is either a 17mm or 19mm I have forgotten, as I now use a magnetised 14mm sump plug.

The canister throw-away type maybe used on other models, I cannot verify..
