Electric problem? Auto lights stopped working and..

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

The car is a 2014 Vrs tdi

My lights are always on the 'auto' position, but on Friday they stopped working ? It started to rain and went quite dark so I thought the auto lights would come on, but nothing happened. I then switched them to the on position manually and they weren't working. I restarted the car several times and after another 5 minutes of driving it seemed to work.

But what I've noticed is the buttons for the radio seem quite dim now? I'm sure they usually illuminate quite a bright green but I struggle to see it now unless I block the sunlight out. Also, the traction control button doesn't then orange when it's deactivated ? I'm sure it went orange before when I turned it off?

Has anyone else had this ?

Something similar, and it was a wiring short for switch illumination behind the dash.

Check your fuses and if they seem OK, get it booked in.

Ok will check fuses.

Should the green be noticeable on the radio surround ? And should the traction control button glow orange when deactivated? I'm sure it did before

TC should glow orange if turned off. What happens with your driving mode button etc, do they change colour?

Yes they change colour .

Should the radio surround glow green ? But noticeable ? Mine really isn't :(

Haven't had chance to look at the fuses yet .. Just seems odd. Goes into Skoda with one problem, they do a full health check then this happens

In addition to the fuse check the glovebox bulb too. Mine failed in the Leon and in addition to what you stated also stopped driving mode switch from working.

thats a good call - check the other lights in the cabin - the ones that you definitely know should work (like the glovebox, any lights in the sun visors, the centre light that opens when you open the doors etc) But given the fact that your headlights stopped working - that alone should be enough to get it in the garage ASAP for a full check over! If you are driving at night and your lights fail - you have a big problem!

The point about the interior bulbs failing is that it causes spurious faults to appear elsewhere on the MQB platform cars, including switches or operations via the infotainment not functioning as they should.

Just simple things to check before the inconvenience of having to take the car to the garage.
