IE 7 - Firefox rip-off?

Featured Replies

Just caught some screenshots of the IE 7 and it stuck me how much it copies Firefox, both in terms of features (kinda understandable) but also in layout.

See what you think...

Steve

Its only an early beta, looks to me like the current IE but worse. I am sure the final version will look very different.

Granted - just look at where they've put the search box etc. Even if it does come more polished, it will take a lot for me to move from FFX now though....

Steve

blatent copy. i use firefox and well never 'defect' back to IE.

didn't opera have tabs first? it also had a search box after the address box in version 7, which is something like 3 years old now...

It did have tabs first - at the bottom of the page. I'm not necessarily commenting on the features per se; if they're useful and get a positive response, competitors are going to try and incorporate them. Natural process I think. But the least I was expecting from MS was that they look at the layout in a fresh light.

Steve

fair enough. ms have stated that this current beta version is more to test certain functionality and that the interface is far from final

Yeah, just thought it was interesting that they started their beta look more or less like FFX but with a different name on the title bar :)

FFX must be good after all, if M$ are copying most of it :P

MS doing what they do best, Copying something, but riddling it with bugs. :)

It amazes me that MS can sell a product riddled with faults, and they get away with it. Who else could get away with that ?

IMHO MS does a pretty good job in many ways. If they enter a new market they mess up the first one, are reasonable on the second attempt, and then get it pretty much right (bugs aside).

I personally hate the tabbed browsing concept, and I wish I could turn the blasted thing off. FFX is the browser I use however, as it doesn't use much of my screen ;)

I think you'll find most software products do (keeps me in a job ;)), but because of MS's wide user base they're just more publically noticed. How many bugs are there in Linux?!

Chris

so how many of you run linux or use macs?

i think microsoft do a good job considering wide massive ranges of people they cater for, people sit there waiting for the latest bit of software from MS so they can rip t t pieces and shout about it being rubbish

 I dual boot. Linux and it is not as user friendly at first, but when you get into it it is a damn site better than Micro$hite. None ofthis having to reboot when you install apps, and the support is second to none. I use Opera in my version of Linux (Ubuntu) as Firefox is quite slow in it.

I use Macs.

Personally I really hope we dont just end up with a FFX clone for IE7 as I can't stand browsing tabbed.

Also I'm with Bengie - what major software doesnt have bugs and sec holes? Even the vaunted Qmail had one a coupla months back!

Browsed tabbing is so much better! How can anyone not like it

Because it is taking up my screen in a way that I don't want - even more so with XP where I have my nice 'grouping' turned on, so I can swap windows MUCH faster than any tabbed browser can, and I keep that 'almost inch worth' of screen estate.

I have never liked the MDI type interface, it always turns into a mess. I have loads of windows open so it's not like I wouldnt use it if I felt it would benefit me ;)

Thing is - I've never understood why MS didnt add it as an option, I'm sure there are add-ons to it that allow it to get tabbed already. I can understand people liking tabbed browsing but it just ain't for me :)

Cant remember the last time I had to restart xp after installing an app. come to think of it I dont think I ever have had to.

Generally programs that are going to ask you to restart once installed, are going to run some annoying system tray, resource hogging part that you dont want. You know the ones I am on about. Like nero smart start. Oh it must save atleast 1.2 seconds as apposed to loading it from scratch when you want it and I am sure i didnt really need the memory its hogging on the off chance that I might want to burn something.

Oops, sorry went on an unrelated rant then.

i use IE7 and find the tabbed browsing pretty good, it takes up all of 1/4 inch of screen but makes windows a whole lot neater :)

XP already has grouped stuff in my taskbar, why would I want it twice ;)

I find the tabbed browser of Firefox very handy. However, not all sites work as well with Firefox so I generally use both FFx and IE.

Yup that's the IE mass market for you
