I've bought my own on my last few Skoda's.

Cheaper and longer cover.

I bought the Skoda one with a discount after researching other policies.

More expensive but it was added added to the finance so spreading the cost.

About an hour after i got home dealer rung up and i was good to go with a price in the middle. Amazing how they can chop the price when you refuse them. Wonder how many just say yes..

I purchased gap insurance from an independent - for an i10 (before we quickly saw the light and bought the Citigo).

Best bit of all was that we could transfer the Gap ins to the new car...

I have not read a reply yet...even from the Insurance provider who could only say his was cheaper.

I opted for the Skoda GAP at purchase. The sales guy provided one example where a vehicle was flooded and the owner received the vehicles full, new, value.

Much cheaper buying online rather than from Skoda dealer.

I didn't have it once upon a time and my Octavia got flattened by a tree - have had it ever since though not through Skoda

At the time I was just relieved I got out of it alive

yup. I was out of pocket. I had an 18 month old L&K that was a write off. Luckily there was onlyone other L&K for sale in the UK at the time we were haggling so I got a reasonable settlement but I was still out a few K

What info do you need to buy the insurance? I only have a build date and I'm conscious of running out of time before I go away to sea, (poor timing on my part) I just want to have everything lined up so my wife can just take delivery of the motor.

When you or wife go to collect it just say Skoda GAP please or once registered phone up one of the 3rd parties.

Yes, it's after the first year that GAP comes into its own...when the vehicles value has plummeted.

Read you insurances T&C's some have like for like replacement on new cars.

Also it doesn't have to be at the point of collection but within a set amount of time, IIRC it's at least a month after point of handover (sale).

You can also do it online should you prefer that way.

Again Read the T&C's

I negotiated with the dealer and took VWFS Gap and am so glad I did, 9 weeks into ownership of a brand new car I was involved in an accident where my car was written off without the gap not only would I be around £5000 short on the finance owing to value (and that was on a 0% finance deal) I would have had to find a deposit once again for the replacement

As it was VWFS gap were the easiest people to deal with unlike my insurer who were as useful as the proverbial chocolate tea pot and they cleared my outstanding finance and returned my deposit to me which enabled me to secure another vehicle.

I now wouldn't be without gap (although still barter on the cost)

I was insured with Admiral who do not offer a replacement car service so be wary of any in that group, Elephant, Sheila's Wheels etc

What's the best third party?

I've use group ala before

Skoda garage wanted £399 through AMS for return to invoice for 3 years.

I Paid £69 for exactly the same cover through gapinsurance123.co.uk

Massive mark up for dealers. That's why they push it so much! Same goes for so-called paint protection at a similar price (would you pay someone £399 to wax your car?)

I have just said yes to my skoda dealer £299 for three years return to invoice.

Take a look here https://www.ala.co.uk/ I'll doubt that you'll beat it for price and cover, there was also a discount code on the Pistonheads site a little while ago to!

£500 seems a lot of money to me, probably worth the risk.

£500 to cover for a 1 in 50 chance of being £5k out of pocket? - I'd take my chances.

Of course, it's hard to know the real odds... the insurers actuaries sure do and they make sure their premium includes a tasty profit.

Don't forget some insurers will replace a car with new within the first year - so the first year of your gap insurance is worthless - the year when the numbers are biggest and scariest.

Jono that's dealer price. Shop around and you can get it for under £300.

The citigo is covered for 4 years at £165.

But yes it's a gamble.

I have just said yes to my skoda dealer £299 for three years return to invoice.

That's expensive. I paid 149 for three and a half years cover return to invoice through directgap. It's not something I had ever taken out before but last year my father's car was written off and without gap he would have been out of pocket. My policy covers for upto 15k claim to return to invoice price.

I just paid £150 to ala for return to invoice cover. Got cashback too (top cashback. Co. Uk)

£69 is a no-brainer.

£69 is a no-brainer.

Yeah, looking at the maths, it's actually quite tempting - £140 for a potential new-for-old cover of a 4 year old car...
