Temp Gauge Hi - But OBDII shows normal

Featured Replies

So on the drive home today my temp gauge crepped above the 'normal' and held a few degrees passed.

So quickly fired up the Torq app to check my coolant temps and weird they came back as 85 degrees, which is below the normal 'steady' of 87-88.

By this point I'd also already turned the heaters to max and noted the temp on Torq slowly dropping into the 70s. Which is what you would expect. But still the temp gauge read higher than normal.

After stopping and restarting, the gauge went back to normal.

Any ideas? electrical? Air lock?

Temp gauge sender?

A one off or likely to get worse?

Maybe the coolant temp sensor is playing up, they are common.

I wouldn't have thought it to be a one off thing, just keep an eye on it. Check the coolant fan isn't seized making temps rise in trafic then dropping once you set off again.

Would the coolant gauge and OBDII source be taking temperature from the same point of the cooling system?

These sensors have 4 pins. 2 for the gauge and 2 for the ecu. If the circuit for the gauge is failing the ecu one could still be fine. Mine failed the opposite way, the guage was fine but ecu circuit was bad, causing problems hot starting. I would change the sensor, as theyre known to go and not too expensive

That's a great explanation, thank you!

Might be worth unplugging the wiring and giving them a squirt of electrical cleaner.
