18" Tyres

Featured Replies

Hello folks, we've just traded( up??) from a much loved 09 Octavia 2 Estate, to a very low mileage 2015 L&K estate, all very nice, an ex Skoda UK Management car, it even has bells and whistles on the bells and whistles.  Dislikes-----compared the the SE Level Octy 2, this one has much less in the way of useful storage boxes and bins, that's inexcusable, but the real "not for us" is those wheels!

So, if anyone fancies a swap.

Our absolutely mint 8,000 mile 18" Wheels with 225-40 R18 Continetal Sport Contract 2 tyres, for your set of 16" Skoda wheels in similarly pristine condition, please let me know.Post or PM.

Robin.

Happily do this but, I'm running the 17's Terlon that came as standard with the 2014 Elegance, let me know if you can compromise.

The Sirius alloy is a little fussy for me too, and I'd imagine a nightmare to keep clean!

Being a polished finish they will eventually delaminate too, usually just outside the three year warranty  :D

Welcome to Briskoda

can you post a photo of your wheels so we know what they look like.

I have a set of Genuine Audi ‘Abitos’ (BBS) 16” wheels fitted with Bridgestone Blizzack 205/55/16” winter tyres, they have covered approx. 10K miles from new and when I removed them in April they were still looking as new:

I would advise checking the size of your front discs before exchanging for a smaller sized wheel. If your L&K has 312mm diameter front disc then you will need to stick with 18". Also Skoda will not deal with any wheel warranty issues with anything other than your originals. Not sure if you plan to sell privately in the future but you will have a harder time trying to move on a L&K with 16" Wheels.

The vRS needs a 17” wheel to clear the brakes, I think this is the only model that cannot use 16” wheels??

312mm front brakes usually fit inside most 16” wheels

It will be a diamond cut Turbine on the O3 L&K pre-MY16

Definitely a good idea to try a 16 on the front to make sure they fit BEFORE you commit to a swap/change.  As mentioned above 16s should fit 312mm Front Brakes but be sure you do have them and not the larger VRS size brakes, I do not know what they fit to the new L&K. Also do the same fit test if you go for 17s, genuine VAG or TUV tested 17s will normally fit the VRS size brakes but some cheaper Far East 17s have thicker bodies and will not fit.

Oops, thought I was on the Superb forum!

My L&K CR150 DSG has the same brakes as the Elegance O3 I had before, and 16" steels fitted fine for winter use

Same with my 1,8tsi. I have 16" on winters.

Thanks for all those replies, the spare is a steel 16", so, for a start, I'll try that on the front to investigate disc clearance.  I'm intending to get a set of 16" steels with winter tyres, so this is all useful stuff, which will help make sure I don't buy the wrong ones.

I'll still change to 16"  "Summer tyres" if I can, for the sake of ride quality if nothing else. (And maybe store the 18" ones 'til I sell the car)

I wonder where all this nonsense about alloy wheels and low profile tyres originated, OK we used "Minilites" on our Rally Cars, back in the Golden Age, but at least they were made of Magnesium Alloy and really were Light.

Gromle, There's not much wrong with you grammar! Out of interest, what are your preferred winter tyres? (Although I guess you use studs, which we do not).

I am sure people will talk about unsprung mass and side-wall flex, etc but in the 'real world' it is purely comestics. Can't say I'm an exception; if someone offered to swap a set of 19" Xtreme for my 17" Teron I would not decline despite it being illogical.

Thanks :)

You are correct, I have mostly used studded tyres. But I did run my VW Bora on regular wintertyres for a couple of winters, and it was quite ok.

As far as I recall they were Michelin X-Ice. Worked good on snow and okish on ice.

If I were were to buy new regular wintertyres today, Id go for Nokian Hakkapellita R2.

312mm discs will take a 16" wheel.  I present exhibit A:  16x7.5 ET50 on 312mm brakes

The Mk3 VRS rotors are 340mm and have a minimum 17" rim.

Re: alloys / low profile tyres.  I've run 5 sets of wheels on my current car (because I can).  If sticking with OEM wheels the bigger diameter, the heavier they are & it's generally a backwards step.

As an idea of weight:

Ex-factory 16x6.5" 205/55r16 ET50 CSC2 = ~17kg.  Not a bad combo but the overall diameter is a bit small and looks unbalanced.

BBS 17x8 ET35 225/45r17 Khumo = ~18kg.  Great, lightweight rims.  A fraction too much poke makes the steering feel a bit odd.  ET45 would be better.  Crap tyres. 235/45r17 would be better resolved aesthetically.

Audi A4 2010 16x7.5 ET50 225/55r16 Michelin Primacy = ~20kg.  really good width / offset.  Slightly porky (the 2kg per corner does make a difference). Aesthetically resolved.  Good diameter for speedo accuracy (on my car).

Audi A4 2011 17x7.5 ET45  225/50r17 Bridgestone RE050A = ~22kg.  Nice width and offset.  Way too heavy.  Diameter too big.  Made the speedo too accurate.  If you've got lowered springs the front will scrape if you hit a bump mid-corner.

Audi S3 2010 18x7.5 ET50 225/45r18 Bridgestone RE050A = ~22kg.  Another set of porkers.  Back to stock diameter & offset & aesthetically it looks very under-done.  It really needs a 235/40r18 tyre.

If I had a big bucket of money I'd aim at a lightweight (<7.5kg) 17x7.5 ET45 rim with a 235/45r17 tyre.  Unfortunately people keep offering me ridiculously cheap rims & tyres so i run these porky Audi facory rims all the time (Total cost for the BBS & 3 sets of Audi rims has been about AUD700).

I really do appreciate this information, £12.00 well spent, I reckon.

So, If I were to go looking for a decent second-hand set of 16"x 6.5J Alloys for this L&K, might I be looking at anything VAG? and does someone know what offset I should be asking for?

5x112_ bolt pcd (VAG from mk5 golf era onwards), some Mercedes.  Offset on Octy iii wheels is et 51, width 7.5j.  You can go inwards 5mm easy and out 15 or 20mm.  There are web sites that have lists/calculators to help you find wheels to fit from other cars

Most VAG wheels will fit, but some also use 5x100 PCD (you need 5x112) and some of the newer Audi’s use a 66.6mm centre bore whereas your car is 57.1mm

ET, stick between 45 - 50 mm and you will be fine.

Good Morning and thanks for that info ,

What an excellent forum we have here, hope I don't get to be a nuisance!

I've run 66.6mm centrebore  A4 wheels  on my last 2 sets.  I simply run 66.6 - 57.1mm hub centric rings.  They are fairly cheap - about AUD20 a set (GBP10).

Agreed that is a possibility, but then you could also use adapters and run whatever PCD you want.

I was nearly pointing out what size the OP has on his car.

I'd happily use "centric rings" to adapt the bore diameter,if necessary, assuming all other parameters were satisfied but I think I'd draw the line at PCD adapters.

I have come round to thinking that this nice car does not really deserve Steel Winter Wheels, when there are nice inexpensive Alloys out there, there is an ebay "shop" in Germany with some good deals, but they seem not to cater for my Octy3, I guess this might have something to do with their national T.U.V restrictions,( wonder where their rulers got the idea for that lot?)

After a few weeks ownership, we conclude that the ride on 18"s is vile, and the handling no better than the old car-------but still, we do love the "new" car.

Robin.

Have you made sure the transport donuts have been removed?

I find the ride on my 225/40r18s with 36psi to be superior to the previous 225/50r17 at 38psi. This has come as a surprise to me.  Both were Bridgestone RE050A so I assume all else was equal.
