Review on the little 1.2 htp 70

Featured Replies

Hi as many of you may know of have noticed i have a mk2 fabia sport htp 70 i was driving in the north pennies during week and yes it stuggled a few times going uphill with a full tank but all in all i absolutly loved the way it performed in some of the tight corners it handled beautifully uphill hairpins it absolutly loved who else loves theres little htp engine cause i adore mine mine get a full service every 4k some of you may agree this is to often but opinions are opinions

Yeah great little engine.

It really does have to be a really steep hill for it to struggle though haha.

What do you mean by Full Service every 4,000 miles.

Is that an Oil & Filter Service, fluids checked and a check around the car & some TLC,

or are Brake Drums coming off etc?

Check around car change plugs oil oil filter and check all levels the levels barely move and gets tlc every week

So you change the plugs every 4k but just look at the oil level?

That's seriously excessive unless the car just does 4k a year, if pushing intervals I do every 10k on my own cars

But if there was one thing youd change more often, itd be the oil wouldnt it.

If there was one thing i would change more often, it would be the Oil Filter, if its up top and can easily be replaced.

If it was 2 things, then Oil & Filter,

but unless it is a low annual mileage car then every 4,000 miles change with modern oils is excessive, and seems like a extra expense

even if your car is a keeper, and you are keeping for ever.

But what is the worst that can happen,

other than by the time it has done 45,000 miles there has been 10 new sump plugs fitted since new,

unless you vucuum out the Oil. So watch for the treads after that amount of oil changes.

Yup

Great little car ( 64 reg ) hard to believe it's a 3 pot

Anybody else find their facelift (mines a 13 plate) htp is a little slow responding below 2k revs?

Its most noticeable if you blip the throttle whilst at a standstill.

Mine always was, below 2k it's dead and struggles for air almost, change down ;)

No im on about at a standstill, in neutral. Like fueling thing to save on emissions.

Mums 05 plate pre revision engine is alot more responsive between 1-2k.

Is this the same old 3 pot they've been using for years? Had them in courtesy cars, merely adequate. I'd have a 1.2TSI over these in a heartbeat, much better all round.

Yes but with a few revisions, not that bad in all honesty

It is, with a few revisions as jacks said.

The TSI serves a different purpose. The htp is cheap to make, cheap to run and pretty much bulletproof tbf. Should last a long time. Should outlast a tsi in theory.

We have two 64 reg , both feel very responsive in the low rev range , find it very responsive when setting off , level and incline , we came from yeti 2.0 110bhp and a Roomster 105 bhp tsi , I have to say we were not disappointed , the only concern is midrange on the motorway , drop a cog and these little cars respond and the speed limit ( 70 mph ) is a doddle to maintain

What part of that reply says they DO NOT change the oil?

It clearly states change plugs/Oil/Oil filter.

Why the feck would you change the plugs every 4k?

Its a htp, with closer service intervals than a Ducati Panigale.

I did read it wrong addmitedly. I was at work at the time.. And it isnt exactly well written. To my apologies for that.

But did you get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?

Sorry I was reading down through the thread and thought were on earth did you read they "Did not" change the oil as your comment was something like why change plugs but leave the oil??

The written word can often be read in many ways and I was in no way being aggressive or trying to be funny.

As it happens I'm on holiday this week and still sat in bed ;)

Sorry if it came across wrong :)

And do agree on the excessive plug changing, modern plugs are fit and foget for huge miles!

Changing oil is no problem, my Defender does about 1500 miles a year and gets fresh oil/filter every year too.

Not to worry mate (:

Enjoy your hols (:

One advantage of the htp is the very light front axle weight. This makes it easy to "chuck around" corners with very little effort and much sharper reponse than the other engines which are much heavier. So the htp is ideal for town/city use.

After owning 2 HTPs for 12 years and clocking up 170k between them, I can assure you 40k on spark plugs is perfectly OK, confirmed by my inspection which shows the plugs only mildly worn. 4k is just plain silly.

In the past I've run the oil 12 - 15k miles between changes - my son had a long daily commute 75 miles round trip and could clock this up in about 7 - 8 months. Never had a problem. However nowadays I'm much more conservative and anyone with a low annual mileage or harsh regime (short runs, lots of cold starts) should change the oil/filter more frequently than the manufacturers recommendation of 10k/1 year. This is very important to avoid valve guide and seat wear which affects HTP engines with poor lubrication. (I've not been affected by this). This leads to a new cylinder head being required. Timing chains/tensioners last much longer with clean oil too.

My current oil/filter regime (diy) is 10k/1 year for oil/filter plus an intermediate oil change (not filter - only about 2 ltrs oil needed in this case) at around half way point as changing oil is literally a 5 minute job on the htp. Im guided also by the state of the oil on the stick which is always pretty clean.

I use GM Dexos 2 oil (vw 502.00 full synthetic) which I get cheap, however a 4k oil/filter change is OTT.

Hi guys sorry for the late reply yes i can see all your points on the plug change but its expense i aint bothered about as its my pride and joy and i change it partially to keep the engine happy and firing happy as a full service only really costs me parts so i may aswell change it all

Its on 50450 now bought it just over a year ago with 38887 on

Just more wear on the threads and things than anythinh else though.

Its not really doing any good. Just replacing good for good.

Pointless really.
