Yeah okie (y)

Got rid of our 1.2 3-pot, could not rely on it, burned out 3 coils within a year. Now have a 61reg 1.6 diesel

Unusual.

Usually bulletproof. Certainly alot more so than the 1.6cr

That's what we'd heard before we bought it in 2010.

07 reg car, with 42000 miles.  However, when the first coil went, the RAC man diagnosed it in seconds, pulled a new coil from his stock, saying - common problem I'm afraid on this engine, sir.  No faults showed once the coil was replaced.

He advised us to carry a spare, I'm glad we did, as it was needed within a couple of months, with a third not long after.

The car was p-ex'd, and yes, we did tell the dealer, but as it was "going through the system", he wasn't interested - so long as it looked good, which it did.

Were the spark plugs examined at all?

Hmm. Cant be that common. We've ran an 05 one for 95k faultlessly (still in use) and my 2013 has 20k on now n never missed a beat.

Luck of the draw i guess, everythin can have issues.

Just hope the CR works out better for you (:

My '61 HTP 12-valve had to have a new cylinder head and catalytic converter at 68K miles last week. There is a rare but documented problem: the head can ingest particles from the catalytic converter, which wreck the valve guides.  I asked to see my old head and it was not a pretty sight!  Škoda UK and the main dealer chipped in and I got a substantial discount from the £1500 repair bill.  The retailer said they'd done three of these repairs, over the years.
Car's now running better than new...

I'd be interested to see the document you refer to.

Can you link me to it please?

PM if you prefer.

Having trouble understanding the scenario described.

Very glad your car got well fixed. :)

It defieth understanding, on my part anyway  It's a TPI, 2020271/7. I was allowed to see a printout of ŠUK's document that details diagnosis, cause and instructions to the retailer.

Were the spark plugs examined at all?

Good point, yes, I replaced them at the same time as the second coil, as I thought I'd give it every chance!

The plugs had done just over 8000 miles

Just hope the CR works out better for you (:

Thanks, we hope so, it's a TDI, what if any is the difference between this and the CR?

Actually, it being an estate rather than hatch is more suited, too.

Diesels just arent as simple as they used to be. Filters, dpfs, this that n the other.

More complicated things are, the more problems you seem to get imo.

But nevertheless. There are some very happy owners (:

I guess it must be some sort of explosive event in the pre-cat, powerful enough to break bits off the cat's matrix and propel them back up the exhaust manifold towards valves/guides.

Don't suppose you took any photos of the old head?

Thanks for the TPI number; google doesn't seem to have a copy unfortunately. Anyone on here have access?

I've just remembered someone on the Mk1 Fabia forum making an observation about pencil coils that might be relevant. I know our 05 1.2, and my 53 1.4 Polo both have all original coils, at 130k and 120k respectively. The Polo has coils by that same manufacturer, made in Spain ISTR, not sure about the Fabia.

I was waiting with some interest in what the member had been told was the technological marvel that had the Cat doing this to the head.

As to what the Service Desk Staff or Dealership Employees tell a customer about TPI and the mechanical reasons

for failures,

i think we all know that having done some Customer Services NVQ, Typing & IT Skills and a Telephone manner or not are not a good enough replacement for Servicing your time or getting trained in Mechanical Engineering or at least know what you are talking about.

Components change, and they get updates and upgrades, and so does engine management,

but somethings still fail in the same old way.
