Mysterious damp patch (oo-er...)

Featured Replies

We've just acquired a 2002 Mk.1 L. & K. to replace our previous Octavia which self-destructed on the French Autoroute, although that's another story...

Bev - my wife - has spent the last week cleaning up the filthy interior (which was probably how we got the car so cheap  ), and it really looks the business now.

However, with all the supplementary mats out we're now able to see a damp patch in the carpet of the driver's footwell which never dries out. At first we though Bev had splashed some water from the bowl, but, if anything, it's getting wetter! It's about 6" round and just behind the bit of plastic that's bonded in to rest your foot on.

There's no sign of any wet from above, it hasn't rained much lately, and there's no dampness further up beyond the plastic bit. It smells of nothing (i.e. I don't think it's coolant or washer fluid) and it's colourless.

We're completely mytified, plus we don't want the floor to rot out!

Has anyone else come across this phenomenon?

There are lots of threads on here about water leaks on Mk1 Octavia's a common problem unfortunately. It's either door membranes, sunroof drains (if fitted) bonnet release cable where it goes through the bulkhead, pollen filter housing and where the wiring loom goes through the the bulkhead. All but the pollen filter are drivers side. Hope that helps?

Many thanks!

I think I may have found it: the weather strip between the bottom of the windscreen and the plenum cover is very tired and sloppy, and the channel where the glass sits is full of wet and muck.

Where it finds its way from there is a bit harder to see, but if it can be stopped there it can't go any further, one hopes...

Pull out the wheel arch liners they drains are proba ly full o 5haite and its getting through the bonnet cable gromet..

That's the other fault and couldn't remember for the life of me lol. [emoji12]
