Black smoke after new turbo - is something wrong

Featured Replies

My turbo went bang a few weeks ago so I had a new one fitted at my local garage. Since its been fitted I've noticed that between 1500-2000 rpm when the turbo is spooling up & under load there is a cloud of black smoke out of the back.

Once it's over the 2000 rpm mark there is no smoke.

The car has done 120,000 & does not use any oil.

Is this anything to do with the new turbo or just a coincidence?

Also any thoughts as to what's causing it?

Is the replacement turbo an OE sec one?

Is the car mapped?

Black smoke is caused by overfuelling

The new turbo is oem spec & the overall mpg is better since the new turbo was fitted.

I don't think the car is mapped. I've certainly not done anything with it & there was nothing in all the paperwork that I got with the car to suggest that it is.

It might clear yet.

When the turbo failed oil might have got into the boost pipes/intercooler and sometimes even fills the exhaust if it's really bad.

Give it a few days or (if your confident enough) take it for abit of a hard drive at higher revs to get it nice and hot and clear it all out.

Oil will be blue smoke though.

Are you sure the smoke is black?

It's possible that the actuator adjustment needs a tweak.

Do a group 11 log in VCDS in 3rd gear to redline and look at the n75 duty cycle.

Post what it reads at 4k rpm :)

Definitely black smoke although it does seem to have cleared now as I did over 200 miles in it yesterday with no smoke at all. It may well have been oil in the boost / intercooler pipes as hutchysrs50 has suggested above from when my turbo let go.

I don't have VCDS so can't do that unless someone in the North Wales / Chester area can help out?
