ABS sensor wire

Featured Replies

I'm guessing this is the ABS sensor wire?? I've noticed a slight gash in the outer rubber casing and you can see the wire underneath. How do you go about fixing it?? Is it a straightforward replacement??

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

As long as your car has a plug/socket at the hub then yes, there will be an in-line junction within the engine compartment - my old 2000 Passat had flying leads from its ABS sensor - I think!

Yes plug on the end by the hub. So its just a matter of following the lead and switching it over...It goes out of sight at some point so can't find the other end. also best place to the get the lead from??

Got no dash lights so hoping its ok for time being.

Self-amalgamating tape would be another option.

I suspect the inboard end of that cable may go straight into a multiplug at the ABS module?

  • Author

Yes from what I've read online the wire goes into the multiplug..Anybody know its location?? and is it easy to change.

I will get some self amalgamating tape later and tape it all up. Have no lights on dash so hoping all is ok.

Any advice appreciated.

What car? Polo? 9N?

According to a quick glance at a wiring diagram for a 2004 Fabia, the rear sensors have an inline connector somewhere between ABS controller and sensor connectors, but the fronts go direct from ABS controller 38-pin multiplug to the plug on the sensor.  ABS controller is the lump below the ECU with a bunch of brake pipes going into it.

If you clean up the surface of the damaged wire with some brake cleaner or similar, self-amalgamating tape should stick well enough to be OK, I would guess, but check it from time to time.

Mate its on a fabia Vrs 05...No lights on the dash so am guessing its ok.. Have just got some electrical tape round it until I can get some self amalg....Will have a look for the abs controller when I get back out to the motor again..Will it be as easy as taking the 2 wires out and putting the 2 new wires back in if I were to source a new wire?

Cheers for info :)

I have no idea whether it's easy or not to extract pins from the 38-way ABS connector. Access will be an issue.  I wouldn't relish the prospect, myself.

When you say you can see the wire, do you mean bare metal or just the black and brown insulation of the wires inside the outer plastic/rubber?

  • Author

No I can see the actual bare metal on the wire but it looks undamaged and and no fault codes...Other than that the only option is to splice it back together where its cut and heat shrink??

  • Sponsor

Yeah, that would be good too. (Ideally adhesive-lined heatshrink for the outermost layer, for best waterproofing)

Ok I'll look into that...I can get a genuine repair wire like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380704021273?euid=ec52470b862f47d7811c9eb4dcda4da4&cp=1 but I'm a little worried about messing with the controller and pulling pins etc and trying to rejig this in. So if splicing will work I'm happy to leave until this needs doing??

Guessing I can get adhesive heat shrink fro maplin

They're seriously taking the pee with the price of that!

Yeah can imagine the dealer is probably more though...Theres another one on there for £25ish I think which is a private seller who I'm guessing don't need it anymore but its new...

time to research best ways to splice now I guess as never really messed with electrics. :(

That is a dealership selling via ebay; Rainworth Skoda. I imagine all dealerships will charge about that much, TPS might be a bit less.

Spend a fiver on some self-amalgamating tape, spend a little time cleaning and applying. Then just keep an eye on it. Job's a good'un.

  • Author

Yeah thats what I will do mate...I'll go to screwfix later...will it be ok for MOT?

Oh got yeah, yeah all dealerships will be similar then. I've got a second hand one in the pipe line aswell that I might get for the wire in case I have to splice and tempted with the new repair wire at £25 just in case needed in future.

That a border terrier in your picture...Ace dogs I got one too :)

Can't see it being any problem for MOT, as long as the two wires inside your repair can't short together and cause the sensor to stop working. It's not a screened cable as far as I can see, so not a 'delicate' signal.

Yep, he's a great little fella. :sun:

  • Author

Great...Well I'm guessing I've only uncovered one wire so not possible for it too short out and surely if its not working correctly wouldn't it cause a dash light to come on??

  • Sponsor

Yeah, you're fine with that, just patch it to stop the wet getting in. The beauty of self-amalgamating tape is that it tends to stay put rather than unravelling, and should be air-tight/watertight. Maybe pop a small tyrap round the last turn to help it stick down.

Cool Cheers mate..thanks for all the help is appreciated..
