Bloody tailgaiters!!!

Featured Replies

My wife panicked today on the M90 on her way towards Perth when some AR** was right up her chuff and ended up colliding with the centre reservation and a Citroen ZX and the guy in his Ford Escort left unscathed.

Really hacked off as I washed it yesterday so at least it looked shiney in places on the back of the recovery truck.

At least the guy in the Escort stopped and gave a statement to the police.

No injuries which is the main thing but it shows my decision to get the Octy Vrs partly on safety to be justified. Our 5 month old was none the wiser but the Wife is still a bit shacky.

Glad to here no one was hurt...............Could have been a lot worse............Andy

It must have been a really scary situation for your wife, especially as it happened on a motorway. Give her plenty of TLC.

She is at her parents all week with baby as we have workmen in the house. I will have to give said tlc over the phone.

Why is it so often the cause drives off leaving a right mess behind them? Hopefully justice will be done on this occasion as my wife would be the first to admit if it was all down to her but tailgaiting seems to happen more and more.

What time did this happen, I work in Perth and travel up the M90 every day. Its usually a quiet strech of road considering its a motorway.

She must have just been unlucky some N.E.D. decided to think it was smart to drive so close, what make of car was it.

Glad to hear your little one and wife are OK...

It was at 10.30 this morning, and yes the road was very quiet. I don't know if the NED in his Ford Escort wanted to prove something to a women and very young baby in an Octy Vrs. If it was me driving I would have floored it long enough to show him whats what then slow down to my previous cruising speed but he obviously got my wife in a right state.

happens all to often, best thing to do (which ins't easy to do sometimes) is just ingore them and come in when it's safe to do so.

At least your wife and baby are all ok that's the main thing

Glad SWMBO and baby are Ok. I had an a88ewipe in a Honda CRV tailgate me on the way to work last week - I was overtaking a bus on a 50mph dual carriageway when he appeared six feet off my tail with his headlights blazing

Being the law-abiding soul I am  I floored it in 5th and left him for dead :D:D

He caught up with me entering town, where the dual carriageway goes down to single carriageway, and overtook me well inside a 30 mph limit, on hatched markings, shaking his fist, with a face convulsed with rage

Think I upset him :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Unlucky, I now manage to ignore it, I decided it's no worring about. I had a Vectra once who came on at a junction onto the M8 and sat 2 inches off my bumper so much so I couldn't see his bonnet in the mirror. Just moved over and caught up with him at the queue later on. Also had a t*sser in a 206 who was racing up the old A77 2 lane section obviously racing a Impreza, when it was a 40mph roadworks section due to the M77 construction. He caught up to me as it narrowed to 1 lane, and he had to slam his brakes to avoid me- bad considering I was doing 45! I just reduced my speed to 35 and left a big gap, could see him in the mirror fuming hitting the steering wheel and everything. Got to the M77 and he raced off only to be forced to do the 50 limit as the cops had just joined too!

Moral of the story, just chill out and not worry about these things.

At least everyone is O.K, cars can be mended, people can't.

Glad your wife and little un are safe

Idiot tailgaters :finger: - makes me want to get a tail gunner for my Octy ;)

I will paint black crosses on the sides when I get a gun in the tail and become the new Red Baron!!!!!

Use your windscreen washers - it makes them need their wipers and they back off.

Or floor it!

Seriously though, glad to hear your SWMBO is OK.

FWIW My female view of driving with a baby in the car on a motorway with a persistent tailgater is to get the heck out of the way, if you can!

Trying to concentrate on the road ahead (usually accelerating to try to get to a clear space) whilst keeping an eye on the dipstick behind, and baby as well, is just too much, especially on a dual carriageway where there is no space to move into the "slow" lane to let the danger-causer pass.

The usual tactics of flooring it, or stepping on the brake are not really options if you might be rear-ended with a baby in the back seat; also many women with babies are driving run-abouts not F1's.

You can get internally mounted mirrors, so to check baby in the back seat without turning round and are a must-have IMO.

I wish tailgaters would realise that there are still cars on the road that don't have side-bars etc and are basically crumple boxes. Perhaps their punishment should be jail + community service of driving a bubble car on the motorway.

Wonder if you can twist the rear washer jet around to face the car behind ?mmm :rubchin:

I glad your missus and baby are ok, but how can the accident be the fault of the tailgater ? I have often wondered this point when reading about other accidents in this type of scenario

Personally, I LOVE tailgaters, I scrub about 5mph off my speed and when clear to pull back in, give a nice long signal and slowly drift back over, they make all the usuall offensive gestures as they come past, but I either blow them a kiss, or laugh, If they wanna stuff me up the a$$ they welcome to, they gotta get past me towbar first

Had a good one at some traffic lights last year, lights on red, im stationary car comes right up my backside, lights start to change so I select first gear, car behind starts blowing horn at me, so I apply handbrake, get out and start looking at back of my car, guy gets out and asks what f*** am I doing, oh says I, I thought you beeped your horn because you had hit me and was telling me, got back in car, lights red again, next change he didnt beep his horn once:D:D

Mind you, Im not female and dont do intimidation, but I can understand how some females would feel intimidated by it

what I like to do is abide by the highway code

well some of it as I am sure it says about leaving a safe distance for car in front

so if there right up your bum then they only way to make it the right safe distance is slow down until it is the right safe distance :D

Love it  I might even get away with it with a bit of fluttering of the mascared eyelashes ;)

Just sorry I don't know how to apply that to motorway driving :rubchin:

can your wife drive?

I want a switch for a flourescent sign saying DON'T TAILGATE ME

Invisible and only switched on when it is safe. ie when I can put my foot down.

Ten years ago - when I had a Rover 216GSi (Would out run an XR3 by a mile) I had a discovery diesel on my tail through 50Mph roadworks (before Gatso's were commonplace but I didn't want to speed).

The guy was on my bumper, flashing headlights et al.

Road ahead clear I slammed on my breaks then quickly out accelerated him, pulling over as soon as I could.

Something I'm not proud of, but he slowed down after that.

Well obviously he slowed down, if he was right up your a$$ and you slammed the brakes you must have really had him sh!t himself

can your wife drive?

No my wife doesnt drive, not allowed to, but both my daughters do

Not allowed to by who???

DVLA - she a severe epileptic

Whilst I don't condone tailgating I must confess to getting a little bit too close to the car in front from time to time when there's a clear opportunity to pull over into the nearside lane and they don't take it. I find it's less likely to cause road rage than flashing my headlights, and if they don't pull in within a couple of seconds I just back off again to a safe distance.

With respect to your wife's unfortunate accident, on the odd occasion that my wife took the Octy vRS out on the motorway she did get a lot of attention from people trying to race her, something she doesn't get in her A4. I think it's a combination of "woman in a fast car" plus "what's a Skoda doing with a spoiler and fat tail pipe" that seems to invite people to have a go.

Well obviously he slowed down, if he was right up your a$$ and you slammed the brakes you must have really had him sh!t himself

My thoughts at the time exactlt IIRC

Wouldn't care but I was actually overtaking traffic.
