Bonelorry's Golf GTI Edition 30 #0337

Featured Replies

Very happy to say I have purchased my second ED30 earlier this week :)

Sadly I had to say goodbye to my trusty Fabia VRS....

It has been a great car to own but I had a big itch to scratch and really wanted another Golf Edition 30 or the likes.

After trawling all the usual places on and off for the last few months I popped onto Autotrader earlier this week and spotted an Edition 30 which looked and sounded like just what I was after at a dealership in Derbyshire that specialises mainly in Golf R32's & Edition 30's etc. I gave them a call and arranged to go down at lunchtime and view the car.

Upon arrival I was a little early so I was left to my own devices looking around the car and could not fault it at all cosmetically, It certainly ticked all the right boxes condition wise and was up-to my standards! I popped inside, Introduced myself and was given the keys and left alone no pressure which I was very happy about!

I went through everything else on the car inside and out with a fine tooth-comb and was very happy! The car had been prepared/valeted to a high standard and had obviously been cherished by its previous owner. Nice little touches like it still has the original dealer plates fitted and dealer sticker in the rear window, Original dealer leather keyring's and a full set of Continental Sport Contacts which the front 2 are virtually brand new. I checked through all the paperwork which was all in order and to find it had a Lube service a few weeks ago and after a test-drive which I enjoyed very much I made my offer which he accepted so I shook his hand and the rest is history!

So here is where it all begins, I will be going through the Golf as I did on the last one and have done with all my cars in the past, Sorting any niggles that bug me, Doing all the little details.

Here is the the current spec of the car....

2007 Golf GTI Edition 30 Number #0337

Tornado Red

3 Door

62K Miles

Totally standard (For Now)

FSH, Paperwork present for Coilpack recall, Lots of receipts, Had Genuine Timing belt/water pump in Dec 2012.

2 Owners, Last owner owned the car from 1500 miles/6 months old until last week and has really looked after the car.

The car is quite basic in terms of spec as was my last example but as I have said before I would always choose condition over Colour and spec on my cars!

Future Plans

I have quite a few plans for the car but prefer the OEM look so wont be going for stretched tyres or air-ride etc, Cosmetically it will be getting fully detailed, Caliper repaint/detail and possibly a wheel refurb OR fit some TD Pro Race 1.2's.

Mechanically and as a matter of course I will be replacing the Diverter for a Rev G, Replacing the Cam Follower and PCV. The car had a lube service a few weeks ago but I will probably go through everything else anyway such as the other filters and replace the plugs for some NGK BKR7EIX Iridiums.. At some point stage one map is on the card most likely going to be an R-Tech  :happy2:

Love the way these drive even as standard but at some point I would like to fit a Bilstein B12 Kit but we shall see that will be a long way off.

Other than the above enjoy owning and driving what I think are pretty special cars.

Just a quick pic of the car at the dealership before I drove it home, Excuse the quality it was taken on my mobile phone....

23/7/15, 7 Hour detail...

A day off work, Sun was shining and there just happened to be an Edition 30 on my drive that needed a full detail so why not?

Started about 9am and incorporated a few tea breaks while the Wax was curing, More than happy with the condition of the car and my decision to buy it. My last one #0952 was a very tidy example indeed but I actually think this one is even cleaner.

My cleaning/detailing process was as follows...

: Rinsed the car, Wheel arches and Wheels thoroughly.

: Cleaned the fuel filler flap. All door, Bonnet and boot-lid shuts, Front Scuttle and Rubber door drains using detailing brush and APC to high concentrate.

: Rinsed car again.

: Washed the car using 2 bucket method one panel at a time with a Lambswool mitt and Meguires ultimate shampoo.

: Washed the wheels, Tyres and wheel arches using a Meguires Microfibre Mitt, Valet-Pro Detailing brush, Soft wheel brush and bottle container with foaming head containing Megs soap to a high concentrate.

: Rinsed the car again.

: Clayed the whole car using Megs mild clay and Megs Detailer spray as lubricant.

: Rinsed the car again.

: Dryed the whole car with Elite XL drying towel, Dried the wheels, Door shuts and engine bay with Microfibre towel.

: Cleaned the glass inside and out with Autoglym fast glass then Autoglym Glass Polish.

: Tar removal using Autoglym Intensive Tar remover.

: Polished the whole car using Autoglym Super Resin Polish using a sponge applicator to apply and microfibre towel to remove.

: Waxed the car using Collinites No:845 liquid insulator wax using soft applicator and Elite buffing towel to remove.

: Dressed any plastic trim, Honeycomb grilles, Front scuttle and Wiper arms with Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber car buffing of any excess with a Microfibre cloth.

: Dressed the tyres using Megs endurance tyre gel.

: Applied 1 x coat of Collinites no:845 to the wheels.

: Dressed the wheel arch liners and mudflaps with Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber care.

: Polished the tailpipe's with Autosol.

: Finished the car off with a spritz of Megs Quick detailer spray and a Chemical boys ultra plush finishing/buffing towel.

Didn't make a start on the engine bay that will for another day but will post some pictures after.

Next time I detail it I will take the car to a better location for some proper pictures of the car but for now heres a few snaps on the drive of the finished article, Click on the pictures for full res...

Great work fella.

Lovely motor too, and in your hands will get even better

Have to have a catch up soon mate... been a while

Cheers

Damo

Milltech exhaust? Fitted one to my mates MK5 & sounded & looked so much better & the build quality is as OEM should be! I ran NGK Iridium's on my Fabia & they are worth it when running Shell Nitro! As for the TD pr1.2's I have a set on my MK7 also a set of TD pr3 for winter & the 3's I also had on the Fabia & they look the best, but IMO I thing leave as is for wheels, or light weight version!

No my car still has the full stock exhaust system fitted! Although a Milltek or a BCS powervalve system might be on the cards at some point, We shall see.

Spark plug wise the NGK BKR7EIX Iridiums seem to be the choice for many, Shell Nitro Super Unleaded is all I will ever put in this car.

Wheels I am undecided, The original BBS Pescara's are in excellent original condition with just a few minor marks on the fronts. I might well decide to keep them on the car and just get them refurbished although you can't get an exact match on the O.E colour so I would either go Silver or Anthracite.

Cheers

Great work so far

Keep us informed of the progress

Following this :) Really like these and would love one next.

Well nearly a week into ownership and I am getting on very well with the car, I am on late shifts this week so on my way into work yesterday I popped into my local TPS to order a few parts for the car and luckily they had everything in stock!

So I got up early this morning and did the following...

New Revision G Diverter

New Revision C Cam Follower

New Revision R PCV

New PCV Gasket

Removed and cleaned the MAF with some CRC Air Sensor Cleaner

Spent about an hour giving the engine bay a tidy up

Also ordered a set of NGK BKR7EIX Iridium plugs online but they have not arrived yet so that's another little job for later this week.

New parts...

Another little job off the list done this morning, My new plugs arrived yesterday afternoon so stuck them in today.

Good to see the removed plugs where the Genuine/recommended NGK PFR7S8EG Double Platinum's, According to the paperwork these where fitted when the car had its last major service 16 Months ago and have covered 11000 Miles. Not sure what the exact interval is for the plugs but I prefer to change them more often than not as will all serviceable items.

I have replaced them with a set of NGK BKR7EIX Iridiums...

Firstly, Don't worry I wont be posting updates and pictures of the car every day LOL, I just seem to making rather quick progress so far which is a good thing!

31/7/15

Probably placebo but the car seems to drive much sweeter with the new Plugs, Diverter and PCV although I have read that other people have had similar experiences and although the car seems to drive OK before the parts where fitted it is not until these potentially faulty parts are replaced the car drives how it should!

Had a spirited drive home from work last night and the car goes really well, Even in standard form. Quite flexible low down but just pulls and pulls especially once above 3500RPM and beyond. Really like the chassis too, Feels very planted with little body roll.

Plenty of room for improvement though as always!

So onto the list of To-Do's....

Firstly the tyres, The fronts are Brand new Continental Sport Contact 5's in 225/40R18 92Y fitment which have done no more than 1000 miles. The rears are the earlier Sport Contact 3's and when I viewed the car I noticed the DOT Codes which show the age of the tyres at 4 years old, Although they are not worn out they are showing signs of perishing on the shoulders which is common on these tyres.

I was going to get a little bit more mileage out of them but noticed a Nail in the OSR tyre when I cleaned the car this morning, No point repairing it so I have ordered a new pair of Sport Contact 5's in the same spec as the fronts which will be getting fitted on Monday morning. That way I have full new set of matching tyres.

Other things on the list include...

R-Tech custom stage one remap

Wheel refurb possibly Anthracite or Silver with new centre caps, New wheel nut covers

Caliper detail/Repaint same colour, Paint Disc bells and disc guards

Brake fluid change

New roof aerial as the rubber is perishing slightly

Then onto the longer term to-do's

Possibly a suspension upgrade

Anti lift kit

R32/S3 front brake conversion

We shall see, Just batting idea's about at the moment.

Onto today's efforts, Gave the car a mini-detail this morning usual cleaning routine minus claying/polishing/waxing. Also gave the car a hoovering inside.

Since a gave the car a Full Detail last week I have covered about 150 miles in the car and most of that has been in the rain. This is why a love using Collinites waxes...

Pre wash stage...

A few snaps of todays efforts in a better location than the driveway at home, Probably spent 3-4 hours on the car today...

Picked up a pair of New rear tyres this morning, Managed to get a pair at trade price in Sheffield. Fitting them on Monday morning.

Making progress!

3/8/15...

Popped down to my friends workshop this morning and fitted the new rear tyres, Car now has a full set of matched Continental Sport Contact 5's in 225/40R18 92Y fitment. As mentioned the rear tyres where Sport Contact 3's but where 4 years old and showing signs of perishing on the shoulders, I also found a nail in one of them a few days ago so they had to go.

See how I get on with these tyres, I usually go for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's and would have bought a set for this however the fronts where done literally 1000 miles ago so thought it was a waste and the CSC5's get decent reviews.

New Tyres...

Headlight Lens Restoration...

Something that has bugged me since buying the car was the front headlight lenses, Common MK5 Golf problem and over time they suffer U.V damage and can become discoloured and cloudy. Not only does this affect the beam/pattern but it also looks unsightly IMO.

Although mine looked fine from a distance up close I was not happy so I had a few hours today and I am very happy with the results.

Excuse the quality of the pictures they where taken on my mobile phone, You get the idea though.

Here is a close up of what they looked like.

NSF...

11143481_10153093696368207_8899079262161

OSF...

11817200_10153093696528207_8493112869536

Decided to give them a bash using the 3M kit which gets great reviews on Detailing world...

11695940_10153093696613207_1482089899390

Started with the NSF headlight first, Masked everything off and made a few passes on the lens using the most abrasive 500 grit sanding disc...

10981808_10153093696163207_3890509071782

Then a few passes with the 800 grit...

11049452_10153093696223207_7216010661375

Then onto the 3000 grit disc, Much finer and more of a finishing disc. The other discs can be used dry but with the 3000 a misting of water onto the lens and disc is required. I actually used a light misting with the other more abrasive discs as I found they became less clogged...

11049519_10153093696103207_5721187215490

Onto the OSF headlight, 500 grit first...

11145561_10153093695703207_1231761976449

Then the 800 grit...

11822428_10153093695518207_5851651603768

The 3000 grit, Again as with the NSF lens I made multiple passes with this disc spraying fine mists of water onto the lens and wiping away any build up...

11822428_10153093695518207_5851651603768

The messy part! The final process using the refining compound and foam pad, You only get a small amount of the refining compound but it was enough to do 3-4 passes on each headlight.

Very happy with the outcome, In terms of defect removal/correction they are probably 90%. Massive transformation and a damn sight cheaper than a pair of new replacement headlamps.

NSF...

11824986_10153093695793207_6259483331528

OSF...

11846752_10153093695388207_8824362576266

Couple of coats of the old faithful on the lenses...

RTech = BOOKED!

Managed to get a cancellation next Thursday so booked in with Niki for a Stage one, Want a Custom Stage one to suit my requirements and will be aiming for something nice and smooth rather than aiming for high numbers. I am also going to go for a Linear Throttle map too.

Be interesting to see what power/torque the car makes in stock form and then once mapped, Difference should be like night and day.

12/8/15

Off work for 2 days now and since I am going to RTech tomorrow I wanted to make sure everything is in shape ready for the Stage 1 remap.

Already replaced the usual suspects such as the Cam Follower, PCV, Diverter and Plugs in favour of some NGK Iridiums a few weeks ago so all good in the department.

The car had its last Major service at 51K miles March 2014 and had a Lube service less than 1 month/600 Miles ago, As said I have done the plugs but thought I might as-well carry out another Major service.

Bit OCD I know especially with the engine oil as its only just been changed and is spotless but it wont hurt and I am happier knowing its got some good stuff in there with the Millers Nanondrive! Gives me piece of mind and all the car will need in the next 5000-6000 miles is another oil and filter change and possibly have a peek at the Cam Follower again to ensure it is wearing OK.

So on Monday I ordered the parts from TPS and the Oil from Opie Oils.

So today I am off to use my friends workshop, He has kindly loaned me a ramp for a few hours so I will be doing the following...

5 Litres of Millers 5W40 Nanodrive Oil

06D115562 Genuine Oil Filter

1K2819653 Genuine Cabin Filter, Charcoal Activated version

1K0201051K Genuine Fuel Filter, 6.6 Bar version

06F133843B Genuine Air Filter, Proper ED30/Pirelli thinner version

N90813202 Genuine Sump plug and washer

1J0035849A Genuine Roof Aerial, Current one fitted is perishing slightly. I saw that quite a few members fit the shorter Polo version but I went with the original.

13/8/15...

Not sure if I mentioned that I was going down to R-Tech today for a Custom Stage 1 on the ED30?

Its done!

Had a nice steady drive down the M1 as it is mainly 50mph and averaged a tidy 38mpg, Filled up with some Nitro+ Super Unleaded Always run the car on this anyway at a Shell just off Junction 23 and continued on down to Junction 21 and to Hinckley.

Upon arrival I was met by Ben (Right Laugh) then I had a chat with Niki about various map related things and Linear Pedal Maps etc, The car went in the workshop and onto the rollers where it was given a once over and Full Diagnostic check all good. Then Niki did 2 x power runs with the car on stock power....

Standard Figures, 235.2BHP & 242.6FT.LB of Torque

So all good there, Up over stock figures and ready for Stage 1...

The next bit seemed like a lifetime but well worth the wait, Niki did a further 5 power runs in total and in between each run viewing the Data-Logging and making various adjustments.

After the last run we had a good chat and he pulled the car out of the workshop and took me out in the car and at this point I had never even asked about the figures.

Very hard to gauge from the passenger seat but it felt much more potent and the speedo certainly went round quickly but was also very smooth and tractable with little commotion.

Arrived back at their premises and he showed me the Graph, I asked for a Linear/Smooth map with a 1:1 Ratio Pedal Map and that is what Niki gave me.

Stage One Linear Map Figures, 297.5BHP & 317.4FT.LB of Torque

The drive home on my own was where I really noticed the difference, I tried to drive the car how I normally would and even without flooring it the car just had a real eagerness about it. It is quick but with minimal effort. More than enough bottom end and response without been OTT and without inducing wheel-spin, The Pedal map is really progressive and not over sensitive, The power delivery is very nice with no big kick at the bottom end and just keeps pulling and pulling.

Total Transformation!

Niki said the car was very healthy and in his own words a Minter, I know he sees many many cars down there but it was nice to hear this from him.

On the rollers...

Mine was mapped by R Tech, both the ECU and DSG. Admittedly not by me but the previous owner. I've had a few cars that I've had mapped, both custom and generic and this is very good in comparison.

I was supposed to say (before I pressed post button) it's a cracking looking motor!

Thanks John,

I have had all sorts of software on various different cars over the years, Previous to going with them I read many good things about RTech. After chatting with them on the phone I got the feeling they are on the ball and I was very happy handing my money over.

I have had a lot to do with mapping over the last 4 years as a few of my previous cars....Saab 9-3 Aero with 2.3 conversion and Saab 9-3 Viggen. The Trionic 7 software is unique to Saab and was very advanced for 1999 when it was released, It is also fully mappable and there is even a website called Trionic Suite that has base files, Boost maps for different turbos, Base files for after-market injectors and so on.

Cut a long story short a few of my old cars where fully live mapped on the road by a friend with 15 years Saab experience and 5 years experience of mapping them, Although I am not in a position to carry out software alterations myself I learned a hell of a lot while assisting him and watching the live data on the laptop. Keeping an eye on EGT's, IAT's, Igntion timings, Boost duty cycle, Injector duty and Requested Airmass vs Actual Airmass. Then watching the run back in real time live data and making any alterations required to achieve the requested numbers.

We had excellent results with my 2.3 converted 9-3 Aero Coupe, Still on the stock frame turbo but had about 4 hours overall of live road mapping and achieved 300BHP/450NM and a car that would do 60-100mph in 5.7 seconds 4th gear roll on. Very efficient with low EGT's, IAT's that never went above the mid 20C's even after long 4th gear pulls at WOT due to the huge Intercooler and we added 4-5 degrees of ignition advance across the midrange to give the turbo an easier time.

Sorry for going on but my point is that I got this service free, I paid nothing so to go and hand money over for software alterations on any of my cars is a big thing and I have to be confident that the company/tuner know their product.

I do not like the idea of an off the shelf map or any plug n play softloaders, So what RTech offer really appealed to me! Fully custom maps tailored to suit the individual and Pedal map alterations too oh and at a very good price IMO!

Glad I made the decision to use them.

Cheers Simon

Thats good info Simon, thanks.

I haven't read a bad review to be fair and as I say mine is spot on. The graph is a very similar shape to yours and the DSG tweaks feel OEM, other than if it spins in 1st it hits the limiter. Not a massive problem but it is something I will address at some point. In 12 months I've done it twice so hardly a common occurrence.

Here is my graph from R-Tech, it went from a stage one, done by them to a stage two on this graph.
