Hello All

A few little questions I have about TDI re-mapping, so I can be fully happy before fully committing myself to a group buy, if there's one happening (or going solo with Briskoda discount alone. PS: I'd like to avoid this as it goes against the site's (and my) principles.)

Firstly - What is the average increase in BHP? I know Matt's TDI is running at around 150BHP, BUT with a boost box which I've no intention of getting. So, would 140BHP be realistic or could they still get 150BHP like Jon (jeytee)? - but from a different engine?

Secondly - I know economy is a strong argument for remapping the 1.8T, but given normal "economical" motorway driving, could I expect a small % increase in range? Nearly 95% of my driving is at around 80mph, so I'd want any benefits to be reaped at this kind of speed, and I suppose at around 60mph to 70mph, which is why average A & B road speed (when I'm familiar with them)

Thirdly - The reliability question - Post remap I can imagine I'd be more willing to use the horses, but would be less willing if I knew it would do serious harm to the engine in the long-run. Will I get the traditional TDI longevity with or without a remap to the ECU?

Fourthly - Tyres. After a remap I'm assuming the top-speed of my car will no longer be limited to whatever it does at 3500RPM in fifth. So, what is a post-remap TDI top speed, and should I get higher speed rated tyres? I'm currently using Marshall "power-race" or something similarly bull5hit sounding model, and I told ATS I only needed a rating to 115mph (which I don't do often anyway) - Should I be looking at 130/140MPH tyres?

Fifthly - How much is the remap? I could ring Jabba up for this or look elsewhere on the site, but I can't access the net too often at work due to me not doing enough work (I even typed this in word and copied it across.)

I guess this caption should be solo price, and group price. I know Jabba have uplifted their prices, which is fair enough given the demand for their services.

Tyres - this rating just means that you can take it up to that speed without them disintegrating. So the answer to this would be to get tyres for the speeds you think you will be doing. If you plan to take your car on a stretch of private land and see how fast you can get it, then get better tyres...

As for the rest, I don't really know, but that's never stopped me before...

If the engine is the same as the Octavia one, chances are you'll be able to get the same increase as JayTee's.

Economy - you drive a diesel, you're never going to be hit that hard! :p

Third - AFAIK the remap runs the turbo at a higher boost pressure. It's still within the rating of the turbo, but it's a potential area for failure. That said, look at the mileage on John F's Tavia.

first of all is your engine a TDi or TDi PD as this'll probably dictate what get.

Is Fab running a TDi box as well as the remap? Not sure but as you're not it's safe to assume that you'll get less than 150bhp.

John has the 110bhp TDi which is a 1.9 (plus intercooler) so again I doubt whether you'll get the same as him.

I reckon around 130bhp-ish which ain't bad if you consider the starting point. Remember you're going tohave tons of torque as well.

Economy shold improve as you've mad ethe engine more efficient but........you may not see the imporvement as you'll be whizzing around.

Haven't seen anything that points to less reliability. However as you're operating closer to the "edge" you can assume that reliability would probably be less but if you hammer it everywhere you're asking for it.

Probably better to get higher rated tyres but remember top speed will depend on your gearing and the length of the road you have. Ulitmately it willhave a higher top speed. Furby vRS is rated at 130mph (I think) so yours would be around the same.

Thought the limiter on most cars was for revs, not speed. So you'll still have a cut-off at 3500RPM, just your turbo will be churning away good'n'proper...

Your engine is a PD, but is rated at 100bhp @ 4000rpm - the Octy engine is rated at 110bhp @ 4150rpm. So you might find that it's just how high it revs that makes the difference - you could probably request the remap to increase the rev limiter, but whether you should or not is another matter!

I believe Jabba can lift the limit if you ask but of course this may have an effect on reliability ultimately.

PD engine rev alot better than the previous TDis.

I wouldn't mind them lifting the limiter by about 500RPM, if only just to see how high it will go, but I VERY VERY rarely take it above 100mph anyway - just when blatting around Wales normally. So long term I don't really mind about top speed, it's the torque and acceleration generally that I'm more interested in. (it would be nice to say my car "could" do 135mph, for example.)

I am sure that your Fabia has 100bhp PD engine.

I would think that 130bhp is achievable, but think Torque as this will be greatly increased and really improves "driveability"!

Accelerating away (effortlessly) from another car on the outside lane of the motorway is very satisfying! - especially when it's a Skoda badge disapearing into the distance.

Mike at Jabba reckons that approx 4% improvement in mpg is possible, but as Adrian said, you may not achieve that if you enjoy the improved performance.

Summary, It is worth doing!

Well when Mike did mine he had not done many PD100s but he said 145-150 bhp would be achievable. He'd recently done a golf with the same engine and got 148 or something.

Mine came up with approx 145bhp (without the box)

I would expect yours to put out between 145 - 150bhp too.

I think the reason jaytee got more is that the injectors are bigger in the 110tdi. Same turbo though as the PD100 and similar IC.

I woudld expect around 220lbs/ft torque upwards.

Economy will stay roughly the same under normal conditions. The reason mine was worse than yours id that the TB was overfueling the engine at lower speeds and wasting fuel (ie black smoke)

Reliabilty shouldnt be an issue as the TDi is very strong. Its only when you do mad things like putting on tuning boxes that might destroy clutches etc.

Mine definitely does over 115mph now although i'm sure it would before the remap. Around 130 now i reckon though i havent tried.

I think my Brink can handle that easily.

Thing to remember is the limitation of 60 on unrestricted roads when towing......OK , so it may only take a few seconds to get there with 1/2 ton of rubbish or a caravan perhaps attatched but it could be interesting.

Jason it would be interesting to see how much power the TDi has now. I believe 100bhp is a conservative estimate just like the 0-62 time.

Yep you're right Colin - mine had 116bhp at standard before the remap.

Most Tdis are conservatively rated probably because they vary so much.

My TDi 110 actually had 118bhp max as I think Mike said that there was some overboost?

Also, I think it would be helpful when talking about the VW diesels to refer to the older generation 90/110 as TDi & the new generation 100/130/150 as PD - as the injection method is very different between the versions.

I would say mine is 110BHP as standard because I got 0-60s of about 10.5 seconds, a full second quicker than the official time, but I may ask Mike for a before & after plot if possible, or at least a before BHP figure.

Starting to look forward to it now, just need to worry about the finances now - there's talk of a mate and me getting a flat soon which could mean megabucks expenditure. :(

Wouldn't mind seeing what's needed to get 230BHP out of a 1.9TDI? - Whatever it is, I don't imagine the engine would last more than a week.
