Steering Wheel Vibration

Featured Replies

Dear All,

My 97 Octavia II(with approx 90K miles on the clock)  has started to develop an annoying vibration through the steering wheel.

This can be whilst maintaining a steady speed (although the vibration is subdued in this case) or whilst accelerating , in which case the vibration becomes more pronounced. Interestingly you don't notice it accelerating up to 50, it is only above that speed.

All wheels have just been balanced. and tracking done.

My garage cant work it out.

Any ideas?

All the best

Checked the brakes to see if there warped in some way? I'm not a smart lad mind you so I would probably ignore my comment :D

Yep, garage checked brakes and no problem with discs

Do you have a lot of speedbumps where you live, the ones wide enough that buses clear but cars don't?

My Focus wears the inner edge of the rear tyres (std beam suspension) badly but also it wears the tyre out of round meaning they have to be binned before I get anywhere near minimum tread depth.

Noticed too that there seems to be body vibration too, namely when I rest my hand on the arm rest console (between the front 2 seats)  I can feel the arm rest vibrate

Droning noise from the rear?

Sawtoothing can make enough of a vibration to feel but it's usually the noise you notice first.

Other than that I'd guess worn suspension.

Update - had 2 new tyres fitted and when the balancing was being done, one tyre was found to be badly off - this was corrected. Since then the car has been fine to drive.

All best

joints and arm bushes most likely gone.

I used to experiment with spacers and idiots in garage fitted them incorrectly. Within few kilometres joints were damaged and symptoms were similar to yours

worn arm bushes translate into worn tires from both side - roof like
