Whistling Noise

Featured Replies

Whilst accelerating there is a whistling noise which stops as soon as you stop accelerating (1.9 tdi elegance). By pressing the accelerator on/off/on/off in quick succession for instance you can hear the whistle start stop etc anyone else come across this. The car has done 13000 in 8 months and has virtually made this noise from new.

It's the turbo and quite normal.

Its quite high pitched and annoying though and its as soon as you press the accelerator not when you'd expect a turbo to kick in

it's the turbo. relax.

ok, it might not kick in till 1750/2000 rpm, but it does start to spin up before that i think.

Mines the same, though i never heard it until my recent Jabba visit.

Can't get enough of it now..... :P

As far as I know the Octy's are basically 'on the turbo' all of the the time when you are pushing the throttle so that's why you hear it at lower speeds when the road noise isn't sufficient to drown it out. I think VAG were the first to introduce variable geometry turbo's which give good performance and better response without sacrificing fuel economy but consequently the turbo always runs and it whistles slightly when you accelerate.

The standard turbo in my Megane 1.5 Dci was audible but only kicked in when you accelerated a little bit harder. That's why its combined mpg is 62 but at the same time it wouldn't compete with your motor for performance.

I quite liked the whistling sound in my Freelander TD4, it was menacing but I can't hear a thing in my Octy 2.0 TDi without the window open (I think maybe the turbo is different from yours or i've grown immune and don't hear it after driving diesels for so long). You'll get used to it and might actually grow to like it now you know what it is.

This is how I understand it but no doubt another Briskodian might put me right on a few things as i'm rusty on the oily side of things these days (does that make sense?)

My Octy (1.9 tdi Ambeince estate) has had the Whistle from new and I quite enjoy it. My last Octy 1.9 slix had it as well but after 3 Years I did not hear it again

Why, did you sell it, crash it or lose your hearing

Hi Johnnyc. I had the SLX i for 5 years and towed a caravan with it My local main dealer (they are the oldest Skoda dealer in the country) had an open night on the begging of March and where offering all new models at trade price they offered me a very good price for my 99 Octy against the new Ocyt Ambeience Estate so we did a deal I believe i was the first owner of the new estate in the midlands

Hi,

I also have this noise after driving 1.5 years and 40000km in my 2.0tdi 16v O2.

Mine is the only skoda with this noise, the dealers says everything is ok. I hope he is right.

It somethings begins on his own even when your throttle is idle. It keeps going on the same frequency until you push the revs a little, then it is gone (for a while) very stange..

cheers

i get this on my year old (but new to me ) octy1.9 tdipd estate, kicks in aroung 2000 rpm, dies away about 2500 rev.....scared me at first, and am going to ask dealer about it, but as never had a derv burner before... thougt at first it meight have been a loose belt, now not so sure.....dont really want a long trip/wait to dealer over Xmas!

The noise appears to die away because its being drowned out by other background noises but it will still be there.

Yes its the turbo, my 2.0TDi is the same. I would be worried if I couldnt hear it.

Just turn the radio on and it goes away. :)

Well that's saved me a trip back to the dealers. I have just picked up a 55 plate 1.9tdi elegance estate with just 20k on the clock. I can hear the whistling noise from about 2000 rpm as well and stop hearing it by 2500-3000 rpm. My wife reckoned it was the turbo and looks like she was right. I thought it was some loose trim vibrating at that specific resonance.

My previous 2.5v6 tdi had a deeper, meatier noise, but for an extra 15mpg I'll sacrafice that.

Strangely I didn't hear the whistling on my 7 week old vRS TDi until I hit around the 1000 miles mark...

Perfectly normal noise though, says my dealer.

The noise is caused by the compressor wheel as air passes over the vanes and is perfectly normal. The whistling noise is drowned out by other mechanical noise at higher engine speeds but is still there.

The turbo is always spinning as exhaust gas is always passing over the turbine side, you just need enough energy from the exhaust to drive the compressor effectively and provide enough boost. It's not spinning fast enough at very low engine speeds for the whistle to be there.

A bit late response, my Turbo has been replaced in March2007. It was still warrenty. It did not die but as a precaution the dealer replaced it.

My new turbo is again whistling but only from 1800-2300RPM. Not at 1200RPM like the old one, the noise is also less hard.

Cheers from Holland!
