Columbus and no Sound at all

Featured Replies

This is a little embarrassing.

I got the VCDS lead and wanted to change a couple of things which went o.k. - activate XDS, deactivate the Comfort closing on the panoramic roof blind and activate the Easy entry,

I then thought I will just have a look round the other controllers and "just" have a look at them without the intention of  changing anything.

In the Radio controller I noticed that the System was set to a Volkswagen Sound system and as there was Skoda further down I thought that would be more appropriate. After the change there was no sound just a kind rhythmic low level "BSSSSD.... BSSD...BSSD... ...BSSSSSSD". I changed it back to Volkswagen and there was still no sound. I have been sitting in the car with the ignition on for quite a while and managed to drain the battery...... And Only when I started to recharge the battery - I guess I did kind of a reset - I had sound. .....That was last night.

This morning with the battery charged the sound was gone again.

Did I just have an "emergency" back up system running last night with basic functions AND sound?

Has anyone done anything similarly clever?

Any solutions?

Did you do a full scan before you started mucking about?

Edit: If you did and you saved a log of the scan then the long coding of your car will be saved in that log. You can go check the log, copy the long coding number, and apply that coding back to the car.

I did a scan and I pressed save, but I am not sure where the program put the file.

Usually under your main hard drive (C?)

Ross-Tech

VCDS

Logs

Also look under:

Ross-Tech

VCDS

Debug

Here you will find a list of all the changes you have made.

C Drive: Ross Tech: VCDS: Logs.

As above.

I found some log files.

How do I know whether I have the correct ones?

How do I flash them back onto the car?

I was trying to get the sound back this afternoon and noticed that the sound system is unable to address the speakers.

I also do not have any coding 07 and adaptation 10 options. Is this normal?

Your VCDS version is pretty old, I'd start by updating that.

If it's V 12.12 then I suspect it's a stolen / hacked software version running on a clone cable. Personally, I prefer to use the genuine version then if I need any assistance then I can be sure it'll be forthcoming.

It is a China version but I guess I would have done the same with a non-China one.

It is not costing Ross Tech anything because I would not have spent £300 - 400 on a diagnostic lead.

I read that some functions are not available on the 14.10 version.

Has anyone come across the problem of speakers not being addressable before?

The software is older than your car (I believe it's a 2014 superb?) which is never a good thing. Any changes made to make sure it's works normally won't be included and it will probably have some bugs from where they ripped out the protection.

I'd be tempted to find a member with a genuine VCDS cable to have a look as they maybe able to access some functions you aren't able to and restore the original configuration.

I wouldn't normally take the moral high ground but I'm not willing to help someone using cracked, out dated VCDS software that's fudged their car.

and I've a pretty good idea what's wrong with what you've done.

The software has not fudged the car. It was ME ticking or unticking the wrong parameter.

By the looks of it it has also happened to "honest" people on some German sites.

Thank you anyway.

I am pleased to say that the sound is back to normal by a simple and completely VCDS unrelated manoeuvre.

If the head unit is unable to find the speakers, as indicated by VCDS in my case, simply disconnect the amplifier under the seat, switch the ignition on, then switch the ignition off and reconnect the amplifier cable. Let the car come to rest, i.e. wait a few minutes and switch the ignition back on. The car, like your PC boot, will initiate all components and synch them again.

If I had known that only privileged members with the right cable and the right version of software are permitted to ask for help - even for the most stupid and simple mistake - I would certainly not have bothered you Sir therevrendjr and I would have kept extremely quiet. I have been to church to confess and ask for forgiveness.

What is next? No help for the Irish, the Germans, the ginger haired....

I really thought I had left this stupid and childish attitude behind in forums of rather different brands. But never mind.

If you'd have had the genuine version you'd see that after coding any RNS based unit it prompts you to manually reset the module. thus giving you exactly the same result.

its not a stupid childish attitude.

promoting pirate software like with any software holds back the original developers form furthering their products and lines the pockets of those not willing to put in the hard work themselves.

best thing to do? either buy a genuine lead or don't share screen shots of your cracked software so nobody is any wiser about it.

there's lots of forums where one report of this and the thread would be binned.

and the comment about race and hair colour is literally one of the stupidest things I've ever seen on the Internet.

Are we to presume that the childish attitude follows you about? In that case I see a common factor there somewhere.

As for asking for assistance with stolen products, I presume you tried asking the people who took your money and delivered you stolen goods, didn't you? And what was their answer? I'd be interested to know.

VCDS costs less than £300 and when you come to leave the brand and sell your equipment you'll get nearly all your money back. For the time you have it you can download updates as often as you like, have no worries about disconnecting your internet connection when using the tool, can ask for tech support from the manufacturers for hardware and software related issues, can use the Ross Tech forum where many clever people reside and will be more than happy to help someone who pays for the genuine gear, can ask for assistance on forums without the fear of encountering apparently childish individuals with a holier than thou attitude, and lastly can hold your head up high and be a fine upstanding member of the community.

No brainer really, init....

Edit: Having said all that, I'm glad you managed to suss out the reason for the failure..

We've seen a case in the past where one of these cheap hacked cables has completely fudged a members instrument cluster when there were attempting alter a setting. The data sent through the cable became corrupted which in turn corrupted the memory on the dash cluster, result was he needed a new dash cluster.

There is a reason why members here do not help those with dodgy cables, they are unpredictable and can render a car useless despite the software appearing to work correctly. You have no idea what has been hacked to get the software to work, what code has been altered to overcome the licence restrictions, or what the quality of components used in the lead itself are likely to do.
