Cant explain this....

Featured Replies

Without any signage on me large white late model Superb estate, if i park in a layby on a fast stretch of dual carriageway, visible to oncoming traffic, they all seem to slow down, have they not seen a Superb before?

:sun:

I sometimes forget to take my hi viz off from work - they slow down even more then!

Our base has loads of old radios from the time before PDA despatch systems and many magnetic mount aerials...

Same inexplicable reason why when I'm sitting in lane 1 between two trucks, doing a steady 60mph then pull out into lane 2 to overtake, I see a trail up ahead in lane 3 of brake lights come on. Mostly BMW & Audi drivers slowing down so they can take a look I think?! :D :sun:

Edit: I gotta get me a hi viz :giggle:

I get the same reaction in Switzerland....I think I might add some orange vinyl to really kick up the ante a bit :D

I wonder if it was more down to the fact that the car has a missing headlight and foglight, they are probably rubber necking whilst thinking to themselves 'what has he hit!?"

This was pre-accident and mainly cars approaching from behind, so unless they psychic or have time shift powers PLUS long range binocular vision........no it was fear not knowledge

I recall some counties fixing lifesize car shapes in police markings to motorway bridges (isolated farm track types) and having success in reducing average speeds, like a cutout copper really

Like this for example?  :D

Cleveland Police used these in the 1990s on the A19 between Teesside and Newcastle.

IIRC They'd move them every few weeks to keep you on your toes.

Sometimes they'd remove the cutout and park a real car there for a bit ;)

Like this for example? :D

There were a few of these around Ireland alright and I actually remember that spot in particular! From a distance they look real enough. Haven't seen them for a while though. These days we have mobile speed vans rotating between locations.

Putting up a cutout which might be a real car from the distance will slow traffic down, but not allow them to collect money in fines from people. The priority seems to be towards fines rather than slowing traffic at the moment.

I'd love to see a system where you get say a half point taken off any points on your licence every time you pass a speed van and aren't speeding though. Too much stick and not enough carrot with the current system. High mileage intercity drivers are hit very disproportionately if points are only added when they get caught with no mitigation for all the times the same driver goes through speed traps and isn't speeding.

Someone doing 30,000 miles a year who gets caught once every 15,000 miles will lose their licence after 2 years, while a 5,000 mile a year driver getting caught every 5,000 miles will never have to worry.

Caught once every 15000 miles!?!

I must be doing something wrong (or is that right?)

In 40+ years driving (30+ for a living) ive had 3 lots, all just over any limit (34 in a 30 and 36 in some roadworks set at 30)

, god knows how many miles ive done in taxi/sprinter and 7.5tonner, plus i had a warning letter from a community speed camera team (last of the summer wine crew) for 34 in a 30....no points just dont do it agin

our lad got caught in the M1 roadworks (50) doing 70

twice.........same section

had the 2nd before doing his speed awareness course for the 1st

Dad passed away in june aged 93, learned to drive in WW2, at his funeral it was mentioned he had his 1 and only speeding ticket at 80 years of age

My dad had a white Vauxhall Carlton back in the day. This had a similar effect apparently. Nobody would overtake him :)

Sadly could not find any UK police cutouts....but these are a giggle...

mmmmmmm. 3ltr Gsi?

mmmmmmm. 3ltr Gsi?

I very much doubt it.

It was a company car, so I suspect it was the basic 1.8 L, with white being the cheapest colour.

There was a black superb estate followed me along a dual carriageway around  a year ago. when a M3 came past at probably 100+ the estate pulled out and went after it with two blue lights flashing in the back window. It had 4 pipes coming out of the back so I guess it was a 3.6. Great unmarked car though but I don't think the guy in the M3 would have appreciated it
