2 year contract hire ending VWFS want to inspect car

Featured Replies

Hi Steveo82

VWFS did write to me a couple of weeks back asking if I wanted to buy the car (no price given).

However, as I was under the impression that with contract hire you could only hand the car back I've ordered a Scout.

Interesting consideration for the next time.

Rob

That's very interesting, I'd be very interested to know what they're asking compared to market value, thinking ahead some what as we're on 48month PCH.

  • Well that’s the car away.   Turns out that the car is inspected by an independent company on the behalf of Skoda (at our home) and then inspected again by Skoda when it arrives at their depot.

With PCP you have the option to buy the car by paying the remaining balloon payment, on PCH the car is usually handed back, but sometimes is offered to the current user at market value.

As above chaps, I have checked this on Skoda finance and they can't sell the car to the hirer/lender as it incurs VAT penalties or so I believe, the missus is looking into the finer points on this but they can sell it to a "third party" so anyone other than the above, I'm deffo going to get a quote as it may well be a good prie but for now I'm going to enjoy just under 2 years motoring in it :-)

SteveO82, I'm due to start my 2year lease in the next week, so enjoy your car for two years and we can compare potential third party purchase prices in a couple of years! Ha ha!!

No worries Skodev, I will be enjoying it most certainly :-)

Had the car in the body shop today and got the rear bumper machine polished (scratched due to my tool box)

Asked the foreman for his opinion on the cars condition - stunning, well above average

Tells me that if I've any issues at the inspection, appeal to Skoda and make it known that I'll be move to another manufacture.

Just have to drive carefully till the 27th.

Just about to swap my Volkswagen for a Scout. Have been advised by VWFS that they do not do an inspection, as long as the car is road worthy I will have nothing else to pay even with minor chips / bumps on the body work :-) Now to find out if this is really true, I also have this in writing from VWFS :-)

Someone recently had a PCH and looked to buy and was told it wasn't an option

A friend of mine used to work for a local authority, he had Golf's on a lease.

He was not allowed to buy the vehicle at the end of the lease, but I could...

So I twice purchased low mileage - well looked after Golf TD GTi's for a much reduced price than I would have had to pay on the open market.

Minor scuffs, dents, scratches, wheel kerbing and bumps are expected on 2-3 year old cars. So long as body panels are not split or require replacing, VWFS are unlikely to seek further payment. I will hand my car back unwashed, with bald tires and an empty fuel tank.

I wouldn't as they will come after you after the vehicle has been returned.

What sort of "discount" would you say you got on the previous ones you have bought Vegit8?

So the final week for my red Octavia, the nice man (I hope) is coming from Skoda to inspect the car on Thursday and take her away on Friday.

just spent the day giving the interior a good clean out and she's looking fantastic!

Have to say that I'm slightly nervous, similar to sitting an exam,  done all the prep just waiting for the day.

A number of people have asked me to give feedback regarding the inspection so will update on Friday.

Rob, i'd imagine your car is in great condition and it will be fine, as you've been concerned about it (i will be like this at the end of our leased scout). i read the BVLRA document the other week and didn't come across as unfairly worded.

I think there are a lot of business users and personal hirers out there that just won't give a toss, and this is the people that will get the charges - but they probably don't worry and accept the charges and move on to the next one - but i'm defo a 'worry-ier' and sounds like you are too. These guys will see lots of hacked about cars everyday so sure yours will be top of them.

Recently sold our old CRV to a trader and i'd spent a long time cleaning it and making sure everything was perfect - the guy came along started the engine, looked under the oil cap, stuck his finger in the coolant and sniffed it, then drove the car about 300 yards and said its fine - didn't even open the back doors or boot - annoying as i'd spent so long worrying about selling it!

The only issue i have with it being in really good nick, is that if there is an option for a 'friend' to purchase i'd done them out of a cheap motor if it looks too good!

Let us know how it goes :-)

Hi

I've just started the same scheme , loving the Octavia vrs , what would be your response to people who think this is a daft way to lease a car , I personally think it's good , and in the time I'll have had the pleasure of using the car , I'm just paying less than the depreciation .

For me it's the way to have a new car for minimum outlay, However, you do need to look after the car (possible better than if you own it!).

In truth, I was a bit shocked at the level of detail the guy's went to at the final inspection, so if you are 'hard' on cars it's not for you, if you look after your car it's ideal.

Hope that helps!

Now on to my second contract hire (Scout).

If you lease, you have to accept it's not your car to do with as you please.  You have to treat it like borrowing it off a mate.

Hi Gadgetman

Totally agree, too many stories of 'drive it like you stole it' abound on forums regarding contract hire.

FACT if you don't look after your car (like you own it) contract hire is NOT FOR YOU.

Cheers

Rob

What condition do the tyres need to be in when you hand it back?

They need to be legal and of correct size spec etc.

Funny old business this is......I could have bought my old company car but guess this is because my company were hiring it and not me. Sadly the lease firm sold it to auction before the lease had even expired so didnt have the oportunity in the end.....shame as it was a Mk6 Golf 2.0 TDI GT with convenience pack, 50k miles, FSH, new rear discs, pads, new AC compressor/receiver dryer and 4 new michelin pilots and id had it since 4.5k miles.....would have been a great buy i suspect.

That's just not fair, deffo a bargain buy mate sounded like a good motor!

Definitely mate was sad times letting that potential bargain go :-(

I'll have to turn the DRL's back to normal then as currently they flash alternate to the indicators!
