Whats the easyest / cheapest way of giving my 110TDI a bit more GO?

I'm not talking about trying to squeese every last bhp out of it, just some simple, but effective, mods to gee the old girl up a little.

Tuning box off eBay? Have a search on there - plenty to chose from

Deffo a tuning box, cheaper than a decent remap and easily reversible by pulling the darned thing off if required.

Has anyone actually used one of these tuning boxes?

I've seen them on ebay and in some of the car mags.

Do they actually work?

If they are 10% the cost of a remap, are they 90% more likely to **** the engine up?

I'm sure some Briskodain's out there have had one fitted for years and are going to say just how good they are......I hope!

It seems too good to be true, doesn't it?

I suppose I am the last to advise but....

We have had cars in with tuning boxes and there has been no gains when it comes to the rolling road readouts.

On the last one we had a guy had a Fabia vRS with a tuning box on.

He did not even know.

We took it off and it made no difference to the performance.

But then there has been some on here that say they are not too bad.

Any tuner can provide a remap & to be honest that is the best way to go if you want to Improve the cars performance significantly & safely. There are several good companies who regularly map cars for Briskodians & a quick trawl through should narrow the list down to 3 or 4 companies

I havend had personal experience of the tuning boxes but I know of a friend who had one on a Passat & loved it. His advice having researched it before buying it was to get a reputable German make (home of the vag cars) although I cant remember what he bought. I gather they vary widely & some if not set up properly result in some very smokey diesels

i had an analogue tuning box on my fabia for a week. It did make a difference to the performance but caused a huge smog cloud to appear every time i even put my foot down a little bit. For the price of digital tuning boxes i`d rather get a proper remap (generic or custom).

I've just had a service and the air filter was replaced. Do you gain much by replacing the Std item, with a 'gree' one?

Green filter is freer flowing and reuseable.....typcially around about

That's true of the analogue units, they just up the fuel a bit.

The green panel filter is a replacement filter which just helps the car breathe a bit better. it is recomended when fitting a tuning box as it lets in more air and helps keep the soot down to a minimum.

All tuning boxes simply force the engine to put it more fuel (it's the cheapest easiest way to make a diesel engine more powerful ). The advantage of a digital is that it does not do it linearly (like the resistor/analogue box) and runs a map which allows it to be programmed to provide an x %age adjustment for a given position in the rev range.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a Green filter as it'll require cleaning every 5k and the cleaning kit costs more than the OEM paper filter! Just replace the OEM paper filter more frequently than the service schedule recommends In my experience, the Green filter did not make any difference to the performance/sootiness of my diesels and just affected the induction noise.....

I had a digital tuning box on my octy and it was an awful lot faster, yes there was more smoke but thats the overfuelling for you and there is no rise in boost pressure, that only comes with a remap.

I also ran a 2.2di primera on an analogue tuning box for about 2 years and it went from being an average 124bhp diesel to down right dangerously fast!

Avoid the crap cheapo ones and try a digital one if you can run to it.

The biggest advantage is that you can just unplug it and no one will ever know it was there.

They are the best "bang for buck" option IMO.

Have you tried the 'box' with your TDI130 ?

Also, if the extra smoke is fuel, what the MPG like?

They (on ebay) always state that it is possible to get improved MPG, but with all the extra smoke etc etc, surely you have to loose out on the MPG front!?

The problem I have, is that for work, I plod along the motorways, no rush, average 75 mph and get 60+ mpg.

However, I live in the Peak District and it a very nice place to throw your car around. I know with a TDI 110 you will never set the place on fire, but its would be nice to have a little more GO! to cheer me up every now and again.

If I drive it like you say, on a motorway cruising at 65-70 I get 58-62mpg.

If however I drive it in a more spirited fashion that drops to 38-42. Still OK I guess.

If I drive it like my ar5e is on fire, I can drop it down to 13mpg

"Best" yet is 160 miles from a full tank of diesel :D "Worst" is 780 miles :(

If the car has already a few km on the counter (like 100 000 or 200 000), try replacing the MAF.

If you think your car had more power when you bought it, there's a really good chance you will get that power back just by changing the MAF. I've recently replaced mine, what a difference!!

Look on ebay for MAF or Air mass meter.

Of course, it is not a tuning chip, if you want more ....

Giving the car more power and torque means that when cruising, you can probably be in a higher gear than you normally would be. This gives you the mpg saving If you were to boot it everywhere with the tuning box on, then obviously you're not going to see any mpg gains, but for a mix of driving you will

The car had a new MAF and Turbo fitted at 60000 miles, as when I bought it, the more you put your foot down, the more it slowed down. All done under warranty , although I did see the

TBH, when I had the digi box on my PD130, it went like a barsteward scalded ****!

It was best on the motorway in 6th at about 70mph, foot to the floor and a few seconds later you get a truck full of torque and you see the wrong side of a ton in a very small space of time. Thats where the fuel savings come in, you can always run one gear higher than usual.

A bit smokey but it always look 10 times worse in the mirror at night than it really is and I never tried a different air filter either.

It's a pity there isnt a pikey mod to raise the boost pressure a few psi..............
