Can the 12V power sockets be set to power off when the engine is off?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I want to power my onboard video camera with the 12V power socket. The video camera will turn itself off when there is no power from the power socket. I understand that the factory setting for the power socket is always on even when the engine is off. Can this be changed?

Many Thanks,

Best,

Gil

I believe it is a permanent feed and can't be toggled off with the Maxidot or computer trickery (but stand to be corrected).

My only thought, based on what I have done on a previous non-VAG group car, would be to find the wire at the rear of the fuse box that carries the permanant feed, cut it and and then run a wire from the ignition ensuring to put an in-line fuse on the new connection. There may be an available 'free' fuse in the fuse box that you can use which only comes live when you have the ignition on. I have not looked.

The other thought is to put an in-line switch between the 12v socket and your camera but that might be a PITA to fit if all the cabling is sealed on your camera cable.

I'd be interested to see what you discover on this.

I installeda split charge relay for the socket in the car boot to allow me to run a cool box without the battery going flat. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/12v-DC-Multi-Purpose-Split-Charge-Relay-Caravan-Motorhome-Dual-Battery-/321148454905?hash=item4ac5f087f9

If you poke around the fuse box with a multimeter you can find switched live connections there to wire directly into, but I've not done it.

On my Superb I've wired a 12v plug and socket to a Volton ZR1220 and cable tied it to the top of the boot side compartment ready to plug in to protect my battery when running a coobox in the boot. On its default setting (can be adjusted) turns off the coolbox 30 seconds after turning off the engine

cost me about £5 and 10 minutes to do

piggy back fuse job off a switched 12v feed

I wanted to go the other way to modify my Audi so the power to the 12v outlet is always on to charge my mobile phone even when the key is removed. Having read this thread I now feel confident to try - afterall TTs and superbs are very similar under the skin (it is amazing how many little things like bonnet catches are identical)

It's a pain , my Mondeo cabin ones time out after 15 mins , the estate one stays live though

Thank you all for the top tips!

See this thread for the best dash cam hard wiring solutions.

As already mentioned it is dead easy to piggy back an existing switched fuse in the end of the dash.

Quite a few of us have done it on the Superb...

Yep, it's what I did and works a treat. That thread is excellent....
