What if you have to take your eyes and hands off the wheel to tap the 'Agree' button whilst driving?

You don't want to program the sat nav, just listen to the radio.

What if you crash whilst doing this?

  • Picked the Swift up earlier today and went out for a drive round town. It's a great drive. Filled up earlier so I'll see what I can squeeze out of the 42 ltr tank Sent from my iPhone using T

  • All imho, but the Swift dash and switch gear feels dated and tacky in places, the climate controls remind me of a late 90s Aiwa hifi, and the plastics are harder and shinier in the most part. If 'hard

  • Well, I'd say sorry to hear you're leaving Skoda, but from what you've said in the past, getting the Crapid was a disastrous mistake and now you're back in a go kart, with just more power enjoy it

Less of an issue for the dash-integrated Garmin like in the Suzuki (where I assume the splash screen is presented at pre-ignition).

However, portable Garmin navs have the same disclaimer and you could power on at any time, so yes, you could indeed have to take a hand off the wheel and eyes off the road to clear it - counterproductive :)

You don't need to look at the screen for the Radio in my Suzuki, you just press the 'mode' button on the steering wheel or use a voice command.

Why?

Probably because it is annoying and unnecessary I'd imagine...

It's quite a common Japanese 'feature' - the Health and Safety 'accept' button!

Have seen it on Hondas with in-built nav too. Civic, CR-V etc.

Is it in a Japanese or a more local Nissan?  I think the Suzuki Swift is built in Europe - Hungary?

Yes they're built in Hungary.

Japan doesn't get the Garmin they get the Panasonic non Nav unit. Garmin is for EU cars.

Not a bad instant reading from a very spirited drive home.

Engine is certainly coming alive now as the mileage is piling on :)

Just a shame they can't leave the factory with the suspension set up correctly. Had to have a Hunter wheel alignment done as the Toe and Camber was out.

Not by much but it certainly feels much better now. Just trying to get my £48 back off Suzuki UK now.

I'm obsessed with wheel alignment, if I think mines out I simply have to get it done immediately, our roads are a disgrace!!! £48 was quite cheap I've paid over £100 to get it done before, they did use weights in the foot wells to get it accurate mind u. Are your tyres worn?

  • Author

Luckily no wear wear on the Contis fitted after 5400 miles. Only a little out but certainly felt the difference after. As you say the state of the roads is terrible. He adjusted the steering to compensate for left hand pull which brought the steering wheel straight again. Good job done. I thought it would be more for a Hunter alignment but that's what he said it was in total for Toe and Camber :)

The Rapid is a budget car. This is why it has these issues.

As long as you understand this its a good car. Just dont expect too much.

A few Czechs I know say its well known over there, they dont buy them.

It doesn't matter what car it is, if you hit a pot hole it can fu<# your wheel alignement!! I have to say though that the Rapid seems to be quite resilient to pt holes, knocks and bumps. In 12 months I've hit loads, don't know if it's the ,lower springs fitted or the low profile tyres, or both, but big bangs and no change in wheel alignment. I've checked the wear on the tyres and all even and good.

Have to agree on that - roads are awful where I live, so have had a fair few hard pot hole bangs (though no kerbing thankfully). Wheel alignment still spot-on and tyre wear is even.

I think the Swift Sport has really rather got to be the bargain warm hatch of the moment hasnt it?!

It drives great (from what I hear), despite the small boot is moderately practical, plenty of high revving NA power (7200rpm limiter with 6900 peak is great in this day and age with most motors making peak power well before the limiter)....but not so fast that you cant exploit a good portion of it......and christ for a few quid less than £13.5k its far easier to list the standard kit it hasnt got....I gather all the paint choices are free of charge as well!

Once I am in a postion to drop my Mk3 Octavia am definitely contemplating one of these or perhaps a 1.6 petrol Vitara of some variety....in the fortunate postion to be able to get either with significant discount so in either case really would be an awful lot of new car for the money.

You're absolutely right there with all you said. All is available within 2 weeks if not in stock. Sport Colours are limited as they dropped the Red colour last year :(

The Vitara is a lovely vehicle now to previous. Very well specced and the 1.6 in any variant is a great engine. I love my 1.6 vvt it certainly has tons of power for use. On 5400 miles now and it gets better all the time. Excellent go kart handling with great fuel economy.

The Vitara is a great little thing. It's built to a price in the plastics, but comes with some quite sophisticated bits and bobs if you spec the SZ5. I'd still say get the diesel or look at the 1.4 turbo petrol model.

  • 2 weeks later...

I must be one of the few Rapid owners who cannot fault the car!   I have one of the original Rapid Sports when Skoda intended only to make an exclusive edition - one per dealer, only in white and only in the saloon variant.

Every day, the car makes me smile!   I cannot fault it - it looks good, handles beautifully and is very well put together.   The ride may be a little hard, but that is what you expect from a "Sport" version of a car anyway.   It has enough extras to keep me happy.

The car may be a "budget" brand, but there's nothing budget about it apart from the re-use of tool jigs and parts from other V.A.G. models as far as I am concerned.   Maybe the dissatisfied customers have a "Monday morning built" car or a "POETS' day car"?

I had a Daewoo once (now badged "Chevrolet") - now that was a budget car built on a shoestring!   Comparing the Skoda to the Kia, it is clear that the Kia has inferior upholstery - the Skoda may be built to a budget, but the parts are quality.

Having had the Swift nearly 6 months now I can say the Rapid is a very budget and poor quality car. The Swift is solidly built with better plastics and materials and the seats put the Rapid to shame but you can't compare the 2 as they're two totally different from each other. This was the car I was supposed to of got instead of the Rapid. I guess I made a mistake keeping loyal to the brand.

Maybe just your model and spec felt very budget and poor quality car.... wondering if the build has been improved on the MY16 models then ???  as my opinion of the car is it feels very much like a premium small car to a certain degree and my expectations are quiet high coming from a BMW E60, Audi A4 then the MRS Golf Mk5, Golf GTi 1.8T Mk4 (which i still have) , VW Polo.

Over the last 4 months I have driven plenty of hire cars,  (for a period of no less than 7 days) a Vauxhall Mooka diesel 4x4 model (that was rubbish but high spec,) A new Astra Sport of some sort - it was ok ish but felt cheap, a brand new Kia Ceed, you know what.. it was a surprising nice for a week, An insignia, - boring, Hydundi i30 i think it was for 2 days, now that was poor....  and my current long term pool car till my Superb arrives is a Volvo S40 SE Lux which drives ok but again boring inside.

In regards to the seats...... my seats are really comfy and cant fault them at all but understand these are only on the SE Sport trim.
