Transmission Specialist needed in Berkshire area

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have recently been having a lot of problems with my '05 Skoda Octavia Elegance's automatic transmission. Apparently this is a "common fault" amongst the automatics of this age, and has been basically causing the gear to "drop out" when speeding up or slowing down, leaving me with a lot of revs and no oomph.

Since the car has been to the garage twice now, and both times they've advised there's nothing they can do about it, they've now recommended I seek out a transmission specialist, one who can deal with Skoda automatic transmission, and see if they can either repair or replace.

Having absolutely no car knowledge whatsoever, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of where to go, any trusted chains or garages, specifically in the Bracknell/Berkshire/Buckinghamshire area? I'm worried about going to someone who will charge me an arm and a leg for little-to-no resolution.

Hope someone out there can help!

Hello.

Which engine does it have? Is it an automatic (torque converter) or DSG transmission?

Phil

Is yours a traditional torque convertor auto, or a DSG transmission? As there is a vast difference between the two

If a DSG, the mechatronics unit that controls the gear and clutch movements can be removed and repaired without removing the entire gearbox.

If a conventional torque convertor box, before worrying about finding a transmission specialist, have the ATF changed, as this can work wonders (Source Citroenet; ZF Transmissions recommend changing ATF every 50_000 miles, and if they don't know then who will?).

I had my gearbox done by Stephens Engineering ( http://www.stephensengineering.co.uk/ ) about 55K ago after losing reverse; still going strong.  There was a fault initially on collection (thump into 1st), but second time round they sorted that without any fuss or extra cost (everyone can accept something can go wrong, it is getting it remedied which counts).

They were nice guys, and having sat in the waiting room while they were talking to other customers you could tell they were straight up.  I'd use them again.  They were about £500 cheaper for the work than my local place here in Norfolk, so worth the journey.  It was still a big old bill, mind...

Good luck.

Mine is the 01V ZF 5 Speed tiptronic.  DSG is quite different I believe.
