Wax, polish - how often?

Featured Replies

Just getting to grips with polishing and waxing with help from loads of guides on line, but can't seem to find one for what to do and how often once you have given a car the full works????

If you wash the car regularly should it be followed up with polish or wax after?

Cheers!

Not every time you wash it no.

When your wax starts to fail, water behaviour begins to drop off (doesn't bead/sheet as well) then it's time to reapply your wax. Polish depends on the condition of the paint- swirls, scratches, holograms, marring etc.

Before a polish you need to be really cleaning the paint and decontaminating it - tar removal, iron removal, clay...

I might give a full polish (as in a 5 to 6 hour job including decontamination, etc) by machine twice a year, in fact maybe even once a year.  She is overdue one now really.

As for the wax / sealant, I will only top these up when I can see the water isn't behaving the same, both when washing, and the rain.  That might need topping up every 4 months or so?  I usually put wax over sealant which gives good lasting protection. :)

This is pretty much my regime Jason. Normally twice a year is a good target on my cars.

A fresh start in Spring for the summer show season;

then strip back and stronger sealant then add a premium wax for Winter also.

I agree Jason

I always lay down a base of sealant first then add waxes

I don't need seasonal waxes because I wax often

But if you don't a strong wax like Collinite or Bilt Hamber are good and will see you through the Winter

FWIW I use a QD such as Megs Last Touch after every wash, takes about ten or fifteen minutes. If it's being done on a warm/sunny day, I don't even need to dry the car after its open hose rinse - by the time I've done the wheels it's dry enough.

Also use AG SRP and Extra Gloss Protection (if that's what the latter is called!) three or four times a year.

After washing and polishing what sealant do you recommend before I wax (Callonite 476)?

 I wax often

Looks like you Wax more than Mrs Goldfinger Chris
